New charges expected as Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala murder case widens

IOL News4 days ago
Vusumizi 'Cat' Matlala and his wife, Tsakani, including their co-accused appeared in court for attempted murder charges.
Controversial businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala is expected to face additional charges, as legal proceedings over the alleged attempted murder of socialite Tebogo Thobejane continue to unfold.
On Friday, Matlala and three co-accused appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate's Court. They face charges related to a 2023 shooting on the N1 near Sandton, during which Thobejane — known for her role in the television drama Muvhango — was shot in the foot. A female passenger was left with a serious spinal injury.
The state announced plans to centralise two other pending matters — one in Pretoria West and another in Lyttelton — into the current case. Magistrate Rennie Boshoff postponed proceedings to 26 August.
'All the cases for the accused have been remanded to August 26,' Boshoff said.
The court appearance drew a large special task force police presence, highlighting the high-profile nature of the case. Matlala, 49, appeared in shackles and was transported under heavy guard to the maximum-security C-Max unit at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre.
He is accused of orchestrating a network of corruption, fraud and violence. Co-accused include his wife, Tsakani Matlala, Musa Kekana (accused number one), and Tiegi Floyd Mabusela, also known as Danny. Charges against them include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.
In May, Tsakani Matlala was added to the charge sheet and granted R20,000 bail due to poor health and her role as a mother of young children. Bail conditions include surrendering her passport, remaining in Gauteng, and avoiding contact with witnesses or relatives of the other accused.
Matlala was arrested in Midrand on 14 May following what police termed a 'high-profile investigation'. He stands accused of orchestrating the alleged hit on Thobejane and laundering millions, including funds linked to a R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) health services tender. That contract — awarded to a company linked to Matlala — was cancelled in May by National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who said the firm should never have advanced past the initial bidding phase.
Once known for flaunting luxury vehicles and opulent properties, Matlala is now classified as a high-risk inmate at C-Max, where he is held alongside convicted killer Thabo Bester. During a recent raid, a mobile phone was found in his possession. An internal investigation is under way.
'Cat Matlala is at the C-Max correctional facility because of a classification. He is classified as high-risk,' Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale confirmed. 'On Sunday morning, we did a surprise search and found a cellphone in his possession.'
At the time, Matlala had been housed in a medium-security section of the prison. Authorities are probing how he obtained the device. It has been handed to the SAPS.
Separately, Matlala's name has emerged in politically charged allegations. During a recent press briefing in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was under criminal investigation and linked to corrupt elements within the SAPS. Mkhwanazi cited Matlala's allegedly irregular tender award as an example of systemic issues.
Mchunu has denied any association with Matlala, describing the allegations as baseless.

Jayden-Lee Meek's mother likened to Kelly Smith after THIS comment

South Africans are comparing the actions of Jayden-Lee Meek's mother, Tiffany, to those of Kelly Smith, the mother of missing Saldanha Bay girl, Joslin Smith. This after the woman accused of murdering her 11-year-old son made similar comments that her child's appearance had made them internet famous. Like Kelly, Tiffany initially appeared as a concerned mother. However, both women were later accused of duping the public through soliciting sympathy. Kelly is currently serving a life sentence for kidnapping and child trafficking, while Tiffany will make her second court appearance on charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice and crimen injuria. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika just two days after Jayden-Lee Meek's death, Tiffany raised 'red flags' when she said: 'My child wanted to go viral. Unfortunately, this is the way it had to happen'. She added: 'His biggest thing was he was going to be a star, and he will remain a star in my life'. The clip recently resurfaced on social media, where many South Africans compared Tiffany's comments to those made by Joslin Smith's mother, Kelly. @tezzbarry: 'What did Kelly say? Joshlin made me famous. And now Tiffany says Jayden-Lee Meek always wanted to go viral 🙄biggest red flag' @renepillay888: 'She took everyone for a ride … Tiffany and Kelly, same WhatsApp group'. @simba000: 'She can now join Kelly Smith for life in prison. No mother in the right sense of mind will harm her own children'. @ Replying to @Lisa_p 🌹 #justiceforjayden #jaydenleemeek #jaydenlee #sanews #newsupdate #news ♬ original sound – Roxanne Bloem Like Jayden-Lee Meek's tragic case, Kelly Smith's sentencing made headlines around the country. During the kidnapping and trafficking trial, the court heard how the mother-of-three made shocking comments about her daughter before and after her disappearance. According to the testimony of Saldanha SAPS station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Lincoln Sebola, Kelly's behaviour 'concerned' him. He said: 'When she came into the charge office, she was communicating with a SAPS officer whom she knew. She was acting like it was normal that her child was not there. What concerned me was when she said in her own words: 'My child Joslin made me famous'. That made me worry. Especially as a parent'. Jayden-Lee Meek's mother Tiffany has been compared to Kelly Smith. Shakes said of her liaison with Kelly: 'Something very disturbing took place that day. 'It was the moment the Temple Boys were performing a song for the kids [during a church service for Joslin Smith]. Kelly was busy dancing and having a good time, and she was just on top of the world that day, when she made reference again, Yoh, my kind [child] maak [making] my [me] famous.' Khutsong kidnapping shocks community during ongoing power outages

A 22-year-old man from Khutsong Extension 5 was kidnapped during a terrifying house robbery on the evening of Friday, July 12, adding to growing concerns about violent crime in the area. The incident unfolded around 19:00 in the 70s section of Khutsong Ext 5, where a group of young people were gathered around a fire outside a home. With Welverdiend and surrounding areas continuing to experience prolonged power outages, the group had resorted to using the fire to keep warm. According to witnesses, four unknown men, speaking Sesotho, approached and asked to buy eggs. When told there were none, they questioned a 20-year-old woman, asking if she was 'the woman of the house.' After she responded that their parents were not home, the situation escalated dramatically. The suspects drew firearms and forced the group to the back of the house. They demanded money and forced the woman's brother to open a household safe. The armed robbers stole cash, several cellphones, electronic equipment, and alcohol—before kidnapping the young man as they fled the scene. The victim's mother received a phone call from the kidnappers the following morning. The suspects demanded ransom money for her son's release. Local police have opened a case of house robbery and kidnapping. No arrests have been made at the time of publication. A senior officer involved in the investigation urged residents to install GPS tracking apps on family members' phones as a preventative measure. 'This can help us locate missing persons or kidnapping victims much faster, especially in cases where time is critical,' he said. The incident has left many residents feeling unsafe, particularly with the current lack of electricity and increased vulnerability during the night. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Khutsong police station or report anonymously via the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111.
