Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag and addressed the nation from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort in the national capital.
He said this great festival of freedom is a festival of 140 crore resolutions.
'This festival of freedom is a moment of pride in collective achievements. Every heart is filled with enthusiasm. The nation is continuously strengthening the spirit of unity," he said in his much-awaited address.
He said that in 1947, with infinite possibilities and the strength of countless arms, our country became free.
'The aspirations of the nation were taking flight, but the challenges were even greater. Following the principles of revered Bapu, the members of the Constituent Assembly fulfilled a very important responsibility. For the past 75 years, the Constitution of India has been a guiding lighthouse for us,' PM Modi said in his address.
The PM said, "On this great festival of independence, I heartily congratulate the people of the country, the lovers of India spread across the world, and our friends."
"Today, we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the first great man to sacrifice his life for the Constitution of India. When we abrogated Article 370 to fulfil the vision of 'One Nation, One Constitution', we gave him a true tribute, " PM Modi said..
Earlier, as the Prime Minister arrived at the ramparts of the Red Fort to lead the nation in celebrating the 79th Independence Day, two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force flew above the Red Fort and showered flower petals.
One flew with the Tiranga, the other displayed a banner of Operation Sindoor. The showstopper of the event is Operation Sindoor -- India's strongest retaliatory action against Pakistan-backed terror bases.
Before arriving at the Red Fort, PM Modi paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.
The theme of this year's celebrations is 'Naya Bharat' and the celebrations serve as a platform to commemorate the continuing rise of a prosperous, secure and bold New India, the government has said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to meet PM Modi during 2-day India visit

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to India beginning Monday (August 18, 2025), according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting, to be held on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), assumes significance as it is taking place days before Mr. Modi's planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Before calling on the Prime Minister, Mr. Wang will hold separate talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval that could see both sides deliberate on a range of key issues including border situation, trade and resumption of flight services. The Chinese Foreign Minister's visit is largely seen as part of ongoing efforts by the two neighbours to rebuild their relationship after it came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. The two sides are expected to discuss new confidence-building measures for durable peace and tranquillity along their contested border during Mr. Wang's visit, people familiar with the matter said on Sunday (August 17, 2025). Mr. Wang's trip is also seen as important as it comes amid increasing tensions in India-US relations following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50% that included an additional penalty of 25% for purchasing Russian crude oil. According to details released by the MEA, the Chinese Foreign Minister will land in New Delhi at around 4:15 p.m. on Monday (August 18, 2025). He will meet Jaishankar for bilateral talks at around 6 p.m. Mr. Wang and NSA Doval are scheduled to hold a new edition of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). According to the MEA, Mr. Wang will call on PM Modi at his 7 Lok Kalyan Marg residence at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). The Chinese Foreign Minister will be in India primarily to hold the 24th round of SR dialogue with NSA Doval. Mr. Wang and Mr. Doval are the designated special representatives for the boundary talks. Both sides are expected to deliberate on new confidence-building measures besides reviewing the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the people cited above said. Though the two sides disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. The Chinese Foreign Minister will also meet External Affairs Minister Jaishankar. It is learnt that the two sides will also use the opportunity to lay the ground for Prime Minister Modi's visit to China to attend the annual summit of the SCO to be held on August 31 and September 1. As per the plan, the Prime Minister will embark on a visit to Japan around August 29 and after concluding the trip, he will travel to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin for the SCO summit. PM Modi's visit to China is being planned amid efforts by the two sides to repair their bilateral ties which came under severe strain following the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley in June 2020. NSA Doval travelled to China in December last and held the SR talks with Mr. Wang, weeks after Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at a meeting in the Russian city of Kazan. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in bilateral ties. The face-off effectively ended following completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi in Kazan on October 23, 2024. The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up a disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok. The two sides also initiated a number of initiatives to rebuild the ties that included resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and New Delhi restarting issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Both sides are also discussing modalities to resume direct flight services between the two countries. The flight services between the two sides were suspended following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It was not restored in view of the border row. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar visited China in the last two months to attend SCO meetings. China is the current chair of the SCO.

Sarpanches from the border areas of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Ganganagar were invited to the Red Fort in the national capital on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15 (Friday). Those present at the Red Fort on Friday shared their experience on Sunday. The sarpanches said they never thought that they would be called to Delhi and felicitated. They also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BSF. The Border Security Force (BSF) carried out innovative initiatives on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations. Under this, along with BSF jawans at the border, the young public representatives who were always ready to serve the country were always invited as special guests. They got the opportunity to participate as special guests at the Red Fort. The aim of this initiative is to honour the public representatives. BSF IG Madanlal Garg said that the government had launched a vibrant village scheme, under which the village should be strengthened and the people of the village get employment in the village itself, and they should not go elsewhere. According to a statement, more than 220 schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government are being 100 per cent implemented in Vibrant Villages. Vibrant Village Programme is proving to be a milestone in addressing the problem of migration from border villages. These people were also associated with us during this time. Their ability to stay at the border is unique. He said that the village residents "supported us during Operation Sindoor... there was no need to evacuate the village". One sarpanch each from villages in four districts of the border was selected to be called to Delhi. Sarpanches were called under the Centre's Vibrant Village Scheme. The Vibrant Village Scheme aims to develop the villages across the border areas. Through skill development, scope for new employment opportunities is aimed to be created so that the people of the village do not need to go to urban areas in search of employment. Not scared of EC officials, poll body indulging in 'vote chori' through SIR: Rahul Gandhi

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads In a scathing attack on the Election Commission after its press conference, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the poll body is colluding with the BJP to carry out "vote chori openly" in the name of Special Intensive Revision in Bihar and asserted that he is not sacred of EC a gathering here at the end of the first day of his Voter Adhikar Yatra which began from Bihar's Sasaram this afternoon, Gandhi also said while he was asked to submit an affidavit after his press conference exposing "vote chori", no such demand was made from BJP leader Anurag Thakur who made similar claims in his Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha also alleged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar was a way to steal votes of the people of the alleged that the Modi government brought in a law in 2023 to ensure that no one can take action against an election commissioner as the EC is "helping" the BJP and "indulging in vote chori" along with them."Today they (EC) held a press conference. I want to ask them why did the government change the law on CCTV footage of election process."Do you know that no case can be initiated against the election commissioner. In no court in India can there be a case against the election commissioner. This law was made in 2023. Why was this law made? It was made because Narendra Modi and Amit Shah want to ensure that no one can take any action against the EC as it is helping them and is indulging in voter chori along with them," Gandhi asserted that the INDIA bloc will not let "vote chori" happen in said that it is a fight to protect Ambedkar's Constitution and the principle of 'one person, one vote'."The EC declared living people dead, those who have voted in previous polls, their names have been deleted. I asked a person why 'your name was removed, he said there is an order from above, whose order, Narendra Modi and EC'. They have deleted the votes of 65 lakh people, why? Because they want to help Adani and Ambani, they want to steal your money," Gandhi former Congress president alleged that after taking away land and resources of the people, "now they want to take away the last thing that is left with you, the right to vote", he said."The EC is doing this openly. They say 'we will delete voters and not show you the voter list'. But we will show you the power of the people of Bihar," Gandhi said while addressing the gathering."Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and the people of EC must hear this, neither am I scared of you nor Teajshwi Yadav and Bihar. We will put forward the truth of vote chori before everyone," he urged the people to fight for the right to vote and the in a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said, "EC declared living people dead. EC also removed from the voter list those people who had just voted in the Lok Sabha elections. EC once again refused to give digital, machine-readable voter rolls. EC is now making excuses after excuses for not giving CCTV footage.""Earlier vote theft was done stealthily, now it is being done openly in the name of SIR," he his remarks at the end of day 1 of the Voter Adhikar Yatra, Gandhi also said they started the yatra in Bihar with a purpose."For some years people had suspected that their is some fraud in the polls and stealing of elections is taking place. In Maharashtra, while we won the Lok Sabha polls, just four months later the BJP swept the assembly polls," Gandhi said."When we investigated, we found that between the Lok Sabha and assembly polls, one crore voters were added by the Election Commission through magic," he wherever new voters were added, the BJP won, he added."Our votes did not go down and remained the same. The BJP got all the new votes. We asked the EC to explain to us where did these one crore voters come from but they refused. We asked them to give CCTV footage and they refused. We asked for machine-readable voter list but they refused," he said they then selected the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat and under it got analysed one assembly segment data."We took four months and found out that the Bangalore Central seat was stolen by the BJP and and EC," he said and claimed that one lakh voters were found to be fake."EC asks me to submit an affidavit but when Anurag Thakur says the same thing that I have said, it does not ask for an affidavit from him," he claimed that the EC got to know that INDIA bloc has found out how 'vote chori' happens and then they came up with a new tactic of addressing a press conference in Delhi, Chief Election Commissioner Gynaesh Kumar said the electoral roll revision is aimed at removing all shortcomings in voter lists and it is a matter of grave concern that some parties are spreading misinformation about it and firing from the EC's shoulder .The CEC rejected as "baseless" the allegations of double voting and "vote theft" and asserted that all stakeholders are working to make SIR a success in a transparent manner.
