
LNG traders divert four US cargoes from Europe to Asia
Four cargoes of
liquefied natural gas
headed for Europe changed course to Asia in the last two weeks, after European prices fell below the Asian benchmark and opened up an arbitrage for deliveries eastward, according to analysts and shipping data.

More cargoes diverting from the Atlantic to the Pacific would increase competition between the two basins, in a year when Europe may need up to an extra 250 LNG cargoes to refill its depleted gas stores ahead of winter.
A combination of improved netbacks to Asia and easing European price support, rather than stronger Asian demand, had led to a clear, if narrow, economic case for redirection, said Go Katayama, principal insight analyst at data analytics firm Kpler.

"JKM premiums over TTF have widened, improving netbacks for U.S.-origin cargoes," he said.

The Japan-Korea-Marker (JKM) is the LNG benchmark price assessment for spot physical cargoes in Asia. The Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) is the benchmark for natural gas in Europe.
Kpler data showed the Energy Innovator tanker, controlled by Germany's RWE, departed Freeport LNG in Texas on April 7. It was destined for Dunkirk, France before diverting towards the Cape of Good Hope on April 16.
The Shell-controlled New Nature tanker also changed course from Europe to head south on April 24, after departing Sabine Pass LNG in Louisiana on April 16.
Two more tankers have also seen later arrival dates, suggesting a switch in destinations from
Europe to Asia
which adds a couple of weeks' travel time, said Alex Froley, senior LNG analyst at data intelligence firm ICIS.
The arrival date for the Orion Spirit tanker changed from April 24 to May 14, while the Pacific Success tanker's arrival date changed from April 22 to May 18, he said.
"The estimated time of arrival on those suggests they switched from a two-week journey across the Atlantic to a longer journey to Asia."
Kpler data shows the Orion Spirit and Pacific Success, both controlled by TotalEnergies, were initially bound for Dunkirk, France and Rostock, Germany respectively.
Additionally, despite its proximity to Europe, the first loading from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project offshore Mauritania and Senegal on the British Sponsor tanker is heading towards Asia, added Froley.
Kpler data shows BP's British Sponsor is on course for Singapore.
"However, Europe should still continue to receive large amounts of LNG, and if storage injection rates start to slow, Europe would likely increase its prices a little to pull more cargoes back," said Froley, adding that Asian demand is not picking up strongly.
"The change is more about the speed at which both
markets
have drifted lower in recent weeks on weaker economic expectations."
Asian spot LNG prices had been holding at near one-year lows since mid-April as demand remained tepid. They were last at $11.80 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) on April 25.
The benchmark front-month contract at the Dutch TTF hub closed at 32.10 euros per megawatt hour on Thursday, or $10.62/mmBtu. It had closed at $10.64/mmBtu on April 25.

Trump's top advisors and official White House accounts also stopped posting photos and content mentioning Musk. Musk, whose business empire includes Tesla, SpaceX and X, seemed to have got the drift. Amid mounting investor worries, he announced a major reduction in political spending. This was a public indication of the billionaire turning his focus back to his businesses. Tesla's sales in Europe dropped 49% in April, indicating a backlash against him. Towards the end of that month, Tesla reported a 71% dip in profits. In a call with Tesla investors, Musk said that he would begin stepping back from his position at DOGE in May. In the US and abroad, Tesla dealerships have been the target of protests and vandalism. Musk's move to impose harsh employment and spending cuts within the federal government on behalf of the Trump administration was dubbed 'one of the greatest brand destructions" ever by Scott Galloway, professor of marketing at New York University's Stern School of Business. Frankly, Musk's accountability has been non-existent, his loyalties seem inconsistent and his political intentions unclear. Trump might be well aware of this. Musk stood for six hours to shake hands with Democrat Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign. In 2014, Musk described himself as 'somewhere in the middle, fiscally conservative and socially liberal." He even advocated that Trump 'hang up his hat and sail into sunset" in 2022, arguing that he was too old to seek re-election. But then he started to tilt Republican. Since the president is accustomed to generating all his popularity himself, it would be easy for him to assume he needs nobody's help on that count. However, Musk will still hold billions of dollars once Trump's term is over, not to mention the power of his social media platform. In the political sphere, his legacy may be a handy list of what the ultra-rich should do and not do. Or maybe he has left America's business class a model that no one else would dare imitate. New Delhi: The proposed 50% tariff on all foreign steel and aluminium by US President Donald Trump could hurt India's engineering exports, as these metals and their derivatives account for nearly a quarter of the country's total engineering goods shipments to the US. The annual export of steel, aluminium and their derivatives to the US currently stand at around $5 billion. "This is perhaps not the opportune time to introduce such unilateral tariff especially when BTA negotiations are going on. It can make the work of the negotiators tricky. The proposed tariff increase by the Trump administration is likely to impact the engineering exports which are about $5 billion under this head," the EEPC India Chairman said.

Sensex dips 800 pts, Nifty below 24,600 as latest tariff hikes jolt markets

The BSE Sensex index plunged 796 points or 0.98 per cent in the intraday trade to hit a low of 80,654 during the day. The NSE Nifty50 fell 224 points, or 0.91 per cent, to 24,526. The indices registered their worst fall since May 27 this year. The broader market indices continued to outperform the benchmarks. The Nifty MidCap was 0.08 per cent up while the Nifty SmallCap index was 0.01 per cent lower, respectively. Except for Nifty Realty, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and PSU Banks, all sectors were trading lower on Monday, led by information technology (IT) and metal. Furthermore, the market breadth remained skewed in favour of sellers. About 1,336 stocks rose, 1,779 declined, while 187 remained unchanged on the BSE. The market structure favours the continuation of the ongoing consolidation phase and global headwinds like renewed tariff concerns that will restrain a breakout rally, according to VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments. The gauge for tech stocks -- Nifty IT -- fell as much as 1.5 per cent during the session, with Mphasis, Persistent Systems and HCL Technologies leading the decline. Meanwhile, in the metal space, Welspun Corp, Vedanta and JSW Steel were among the top losers as Trump's steel and aluminium will become June 4, Wednesday. The Nifty Metal index was the top sectoral loser, falling as much as 1.6 per cent on Monday. Shares of Tata Steel, Hindalco and NMDC were trading with a loss of nearly 1 per cent. Key levels to watch: If the market breaches the 24,650 level, it could shift sentiment, leading to a retest of levels around 24,450, according to Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research at Kotak Securities. However, a break of 24,450 could trigger the market may fall to 23,900 levels, Chouhan said, adding that the strategy should be to design a trading strategy with minimal stop losses.
