Who Is Sonal Patil, Pune Judge Set To Lead LGBTQ+ Pride Parade On June 8?
Last Updated:
Pune's District Judge Sonal Patil launched the Nyaya Samhita Project to offer legal aid and spread awareness about government schemes among marginalised communities
In a significant show of support for the LGBTQ+ community, the District Judge of Pune will not only participate in but also lead the upcoming Pride Parade in the city scheduled for Sunday, June 8, 2025. Her decision to take part in the rally has surprised many and is being hailed as a powerful gesture toward inclusivity and equality.
While the LGBTQ+ community has long fought a legal battle for recognition—culminating in a historic Supreme Court verdict—social acceptance remains a challenge. The Yutak Charitable Trust's Pune Pride, held to raise awareness and visibility, is expected to be particularly special this year with the active involvement of the judiciary.
The Pune Pride 2025 March, organised by the Yutak Charitable Trust, is making headlines for the participation of Sonal S. Patil, Secretary of the Pune District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and District Judge, who will join the march as a co-grand marshal.
With over 15 years of experience in the judiciary, Judge Patil has expressed strong support for the LGBTQ+ community and their ongoing struggle for equality. 'Inclusivity is essential for a free and just society," she said. 'When a person feels accepted, their confidence, motivation, and productivity increase," she added.
An Indian Express report highlights that inclusivity, according to Patil, promotes diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. She noted, 'When individuals feel included, they are more likely to experience a sense of belonging, which can boost their confidence, motivation, and productivity."
District Judge Sonal Patil has served in various judicial capacities across Maharashtra. In 2019, she was promoted to Deputy Registrar of the Bombay High Court and later appointed as Officer on Special Duty in the Supreme Court of India. Since 2023, she has been serving as the Secretary of the Pune District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). Judge Patil is also pursuing a PhD in Cyber Law from Bharati Vidyapeeth.
Settlement Of Cases Through Lok Adalats
Under the leadership of Judge Sonal Patil, more than 7.26 lakh cases have been resolved through National Lok Adalat, with settlements amounting to approximately Rs 2,698 crore. The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has also been actively supporting the LGBTQ+ community through a range of services, including free legal aid, counseling, awareness programs on legal rights and collaboration with NGOs.
'Our role is to ensure that every individual receives dignity and justice under the law," Judge Patil said. Referring to the landmark Navtej Singh Johar case, she noted that the Supreme Court has clearly affirmed the LGBTQ+ community's right to protection from discrimination.
Message To Society
In an interview with the Indian Express about her participation in the Pune Pride March, Judge Sonal Patil said, 'This is not just a step, but a message to society that every person is equal and deserves respect. We must all work together to build an inclusive society."
Patil highlighted that the Supreme Court of India has affirmed the LGBTQ+ community's right to protection against discrimination based on their sexual orientation and gender identity in the Navtej Singh Johar case.
Patil mentioned that the DLSA strives to empower marginalised communities by helping them assert their rights and access justice. 'Our mission is to uphold the rule of law and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and respect," she stated.

US SC gives Trump admin's DOGE dept full authorisation to access social security data
Washington, June 7 (UNI) The US Supreme Court on Friday authorised officials from the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to access Social Security Administration data, giving it complete access to all sensitive private data of American citizens. The Supreme Court issued the authorisation after allowing an emergency petition filed by the administration of President Donald Trump to ask for a lifting of an injunction issued by a district judge in Maryland, who stated that privacy must be safeguarded, reports said. 'Under the present circumstances, SSA may proceed to afford members of the SSA DOGE Team access to the agency records in question in order for those members to do their work,' the court said in a three-paragraph order. The order didn't, however, give the reasoning behind its ruling, which has become a very controversial issue. The order was also challenged by the court's three liberals — Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson — all of whom dissented. In an opinion joined by Sotomayor, Jackson said the court was 'creating grave privacy risks for millions of Americans.' In the SSA case, US Solicitor General D. John Sauer told the Supreme Court that 'the government cannot eliminate waste and fraud if district courts bar the very agency personnel with expertise and the designated mission of curtailing such waste and fraud from performing their jobs.' The DOGE department, which was created by the Trump administration and was until recently headed by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, before his resignation following his spat with the POTUS, while not an official government department, was designed specifically to monitor data fraud and misinformation. The disputed data includes Social Security numbers, addresses, birth and marriage certificates, tax and earnings records, employment history, and bank and credit card information. The lawsuit challenging DOGE's actions alleged that allowing broader access to personal information would violate a federal law called the Privacy Act, as well as the Administrative Procedure Act. U.S. District Judge Ellen Hollander had ruled that DOGE had no legitimate need to access the specific data in question, according to Xinhua. The 4th circuit court of appeals, based in Richmond, Virginia, declined to block Judge Hollander's decision, prompting the Trump administration to file an emergency request with the Supreme Court. In a separate order issued Friday in another case involving DOGE, the Supreme Court granted an additional request filed by the Trump administration, allowing it to shield DOGE from Freedom of Information Act requests for the time being. 7 Maoists killed in ongoing Bijapur operation, key leaders among those neutralised
This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. NEW DELHI: At least seven Maoists, including two top leaders of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), have been killed in a series of encounters with security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district over the past three days, police said on Saturday. The ongoing anti-Naxal operation is taking place inside the dense forest region of Indravati National Park. The latest casualties include two prominent figures: Central Committee Member Narasimha Chalam alias Sudhakar, and Bhaskar alias Mailarapu Adellu, a Special Zonal Committee (SZC) member of the Telangana State Committee (TSC) of the Maoists. Sudhakar carried a bounty of Rs 40 lakh, while Bhaskar had a combined reward of Rs 45 lakh announced by the governments of Chhattisgarh and Telangana. "So far, a total of 7 dead bodies of Maoist cadres have been recovered by security forces during the ongoing anti-Naxal operations in the National Park area of Bijapur district," confirmed Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, P Sundarraj, as quoted by news agency ANI. "These include the bodies of Central Committee Member Gautam alias Sudhakar and Telangana State Committee Member Bhaskar." According to PTI, Saturday's recovery of two bodies followed a gun battle, while three others were found after an encounter that took place during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Affordable Flats in Chattarpur A D Infra Learn More Undo The identities of five other Maoists killed, including two women, are yet to be ascertained. The operation was launched on June 4 following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of senior Maoist leaders, including Sudhakar, Bandi Prakash, and Pappa Rao, all associated with the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC). Personnel from the Chhattisgarh police's Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG), and CRPF's elite CoBRA unit are involved in the joint operation. Security forces have also seized a significant cache of arms and ammunition from the encounter sites, including two AK-47 rifles and explosives, as per officials quoted by news agency PTI. Search and area domination efforts are continuing across the rugged terrain to neutralise any remaining Maoist presence. Some personnel sustained injuries during the operation due to snake bites, honeybee stings, dehydration, and other challenges associated with forest combat. 'They are being provided with appropriate medical attention. Right now their condition is normal and out of danger,' Sundarraj said. This operation marks the third major blow to the Maoist hierarchy in Chhattisgarh in just over three weeks. On May 21, General Secretary of the CPI (Maoist) Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju, 70, was killed in a massive encounter in the Abujmarh forest area of Narayanpur district. A total of 26 other Maoists were neutralised in that action. Officials say the continuing operation in Bijapur is aimed at completely sanitising the Maoist-infested forest belt and uprooting the leadership network that has long directed armed insurgency in central India.

Rs 500 notes to be discontinued from March next year? Here's what govt says
Representational Image The Central government has rejected the claims made in a YouTube video that the Rs 500 currency not would be phased out from circulation from March next year. In a post on X, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-checked the claim, stating that no such announcement has been made by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and Rs 500 notes would continue to remain legal tender. 'A YouTube video on the YT Channel 'CAPITAL TV' (capitaltvind) falsely claims that the RBI will discontinue the circulation of Rs 500 notes by March 2026. RBI has made NO such announcement. Rs 500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender,' the PIB informed. The fact-check came after a video on video-sharing platform YouTube claimed that the government was planning to phase out the Rs 500 note from March next year, akin to how Rs 2000 currency notes were removed from circulation. The 12-minute video, which has over 5 lakh views on YouTube, has been widely shared on other social media platforms. However, authorities have rejected the claims made in the video, and urged netizens to always verify such information from official sources. 'Don't fall for such misinformation. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it,' the PIB added in its post. Earlier, the government phased out the Rs 2000 notes, urging people to deposit this denomination in the banks. However, Rs 2000 are still considered legal tender, and Rs 6,181 crore worth of notes are still in circulation, according to media reports. Currently, Rs 500 is most widely-circulated currency note in India, accounting for 41% of the total notes, with an 86% share in transactions done via cash. The government is urging citizens to use smaller denominations and digital payments, but Rs 500 notes continues to be a big part of cash transactions in the country.
