The search is on for a man accused of fleeing a traffic stop Tuesday morning in NE Fort Lauderdale and abandoning a car with two young children inside, according to police.
The incident began when officers attempted to stop a driver they said was behaving recklessly along Northeast 62nd Street.
Rather than pulling over, the driver sped off, leading police on a brief pursuit.
Children left behind in abandoned vehicle
According to authorities, the man ditched the car in a parking lot near the 1700 block of Northeast 56th Street and fled on foot. Inside the vehicle, officers found two pre-teen children, unharmed.
"The police had to get inside the vehicle," said local resident Sandra Williams, who witnessed the aftermath. "I was in my bedroom, got up, and saw a white car. It was left right in front of my house."
Police say the children were safely reunited with their mother. No injuries were reported.
Residents react to startling scene
Neighbors described a morning filled with confusion and concern as helicopters circled overhead.
"I kept hearing helicopters, didn't know what it was," said Rebecca Cummings. "It's awful. I can't imagine someone doing that. I hope they catch the guy."
As of Tuesday afternoon, the suspect remained at large. Anyone with information is urged to contact Miami-Dade Police.

St. Paul man pleads guilty in repeated assault of woman at his apartment

A 22-year-old St. Paul man pleaded guilty on Monday to his role in the assault of a woman at his apartment earlier this year, according to court documents. Jabari Quentin Junior was originally charged in January with one count of kidnapping to facilitate a felony or flight, one count of kidnapping to commit great bodily harm, one count of first-degree assault with great bodily harm and one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. As part of the plea agreement, all other charges aside from the first-degree assault charge will be dropped at Junior's sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 1. He could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison. Charges say a Junior repeatedly assaulted a 19-year-old woman between Jan. 27 and Jan. 29 at his apartment. The two allegedly got into an argument over claims she was texting other guys, which is when the dayslong assault began. The woman's wounds were so severe that she wasn't able to see from her right eye, according to the criminal complaint. She suffered from burns to her face, arms and torso. She also had a stab wound on her leg. On Jan. 29, Junior walked his victim to a bus stop on Wabasha Street and Fillmore Avenue in St. Paul, according to charges. There, he called 911 and handed the phone to her. Junior allegedly asked her to lie about her injuries, but ran back to his apartment when he heard sirens. While talking to police, Junior claimed that on Jan. 27 the woman came over with the marks on her body and he let her use his phone. Junior claims that's when he found she was texting with other guys, charges say. He allegedly pushed her and was scratched by her. Charges say Junior told police he accidentally stabbed the woman when tending to one of her injuries. Two women hospitalized after shooting on Detroit's west side

Michigan lawmakers appear on alleged hit list of Minnesota shooting suspect and more top stories Michigan lawmakers appear on alleged hit list of Minnesota shooting suspect and more top stories Michigan lawmakers appear on alleged hit list of Minnesota shooting suspect and more top stories Police say two women were injured in a shooting Tuesday afternoon on Detroit's west side. The shooting happened at about 2 p.m. in the 7000 block of Braile Street. Police Captain Shannon Hampton said the shooting was retaliatory and stemmed from an incident that happened on Monday. Hampton said the suspects drove by and fired shots before fleeing. Police believe an older model blue sedan was involved with two males in the car. The victims, who are in their 20s, are in stable condition. "It's a nice area, it's a working-class area. Gun violence is never the answer to anything, so it is isolated for this area," Hampton told reporters. Hampton said the incident on Monday involved a fight at a park near Telegraph Road and Glendale. Police did not say if the women were the intended targets. Police said weapons were recovered. It is unknown if they are looking for more weapons. An investigation is ongoing.

Richard Sherman is formally charged with DUI following February 2024 arrest

More than a year after he was arrested for DUI, former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman officially has been charged. Via Brady Henderson of a spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney said Tuesday that a formal charge has been filed, after the Monday receipt of blood-test results from the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab. Advertisement The test showed that Sherman had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.11 percent, which exceeds the legal limit of 0.08 percent. The charge is a gross misdemeanor, which was enhanced by Sherman refusing a breath test. On the surface, it seems unusual that it would take more than 16 months for the blood sample to be tested. The prosecutor's office told Henderson that a protracted delay is not uncommon, given the capacity and increased caseload of the lab. Sherman spent 11 years in the NFL, playing for the Seahawks, 49ers, and Buccaneers. He currently serves as an analyst on Prime Video's Thursday Night Football.
