Big Stone City woman dies in Tuesday crash
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A 61-year-old woman died in two-vehicle fatal crash two miles east of Milbank on Tuesday at U.S. Highway 12 and 481st Avenue, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said.
Minnehaha Commission appoints new Highway Superintendent
The woman who died was from Big Stone City. She was driving a 2007 Toyota and lost control of the vehicle and entered the eastbound lane, the DPS said.
The Toyota collided with a Chevrolet Silverado driven by a man from Ortonville, Minnesota. A 35-year-old woman from Ortonville, a passenger in the Chevrolet, was seriously injured.
The crash was reported at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The name of the woman who died was not released pending notification of relatives.

Motorcycle event an alternative to street racing
RURAL MARION, S.D. (KELO) — Perhaps you've heard at it night while you're trying to fall sleep: street racing. Law enforcement and lawmakers have taken steps to curb street racing, including a new state law that goes into effect in July. It's a popular complaint fielded by Sioux Falls Police: motorcycle racing and exhibition driving on city streets. 'So loud engine noises, maybe doing wheelies or stuff like that. Sometimes it's a simulated race where they're driving at a high rate of speed. It may not be an actual race. Sometimes it may be an actual race,' said Sam Clemens with the Sioux Falls Police Department. But a three-day event at Thunder Valley Dragways near Marion will offer an alternative way to show off your bike. 'You want to race? I love it. I'm all for it, but let's do it in a controlled environment,' Organizer Jarrid Lawrence said. It's Rally at the Valley put on by Those Guys ABATE. The event starts Thursday and will give riders a chance to see whose bike is faster. 'As you can see, we have the track, it's all set up and it's a quarter mile track, so bring your buddies out, do it here. We have medical staff on call at all times when you're racing, so this would be a perfect opportunity. It's going to keep them safe, it keeps all the public safe, because they're not going down the streets,' Organizer Crystal Lawrence said. It's $20 to get in the gate for the whole event. 'Here at the track, we're promoting the fastest bike. We're promoting that grudge match between buddies saying, 'I have the fastest bike in the group.' Well, here instead of getting a ticket from a police officer because you're exhibition driving, you're careless driving, here you're going to get a ticket at the end of the track actually giving you logistics of, 'I am the fastest bike in my group,'' Jerrid Lawrence said. Third man arrested after Mud Island shooting
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police arrested another man on Tuesday after two men were arrested last week in connection with the Mud Island shooting. Hunter Maness, 33, was charged with Accessory after the Fact to wit: Criminal Attempt to wit: First Degree Murder, Accessory after the Fact to wit: Employment of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, Accessory after the Fact to wit: Theft of Property to wit Motor Vehicle $2,500-$10,000, and Accessory after the Fact to wit: Criminal Attempt to wit: Carjacking. Maness is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. On June 2 at 12:45 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at Island Place East and Island Village Drive. Police said the suspects were three men in a red Chevrolet Silverado. They said that the suspects cut the victim off and attempted to steal his 2020 Ford F-150 before they shot him and fled. When the male victim was shot, he tried to get away from the suspects but ended up crashing into a mailbox. That crash caught the attention of a witness, who helped the victim stay awake until paramedics arrived. Arrests made in connection to Mud Island shooting Two other witnesses heard the gunshot, and one of them had video footage that captured the suspects' truck. The male victim was taken to Regional One in critical condition. At last check, he is expected to survive. Violent Crime Investigators arrived at the scene and gathered evidence. They determined that the suspect vehicle was stolen from the 1500 block of Monroe earlier that morning. On June 3, 2025, at 1:30 p.m., officers responded to a suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of East Holmes Road. The red Chevrolet Silverado was recovered and towed to the city lot. On June 5, 2025, DeSoto County investigators reached out and provided information on this case. VCU was advised that when DeSoto County assisted MPD with the arrests of Christopher Skelton, 29, and Justin Furnish, 42, for unrelated charges on June 2, 2025, the red truck was at the scene. SF police searching for parolee wanted for a shooting
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Sioux Falls police are looking for a 28-year-old parolee wanted in connection with a shooting. According to court documents, Dustin Gallegos Jr. shot another man during a drug-related incident, not far from the police station, on Wednesday morning. It left the victim with a fractured left femur. It was around 9:30 Wednesday morning when Sioux Falls Police officers were dispatched to this area on West 2nd Street. When they arrived, court documents say they found a 39-year-old man in a parking lot with several injuries, a bloody face and a gunshot to his left thigh. 1 arrested for selling fentanyl after overdose The victim told police a man came up to him asking for money, but when he said he didn't have any, the man shot him. A witness living nearby told police she heard yelling that morning, followed by a 'pop, pop.'When she looked out her window, she saw a man lying by a tree and a gray sedan leaving the area, which she got video of. Court documents say that the video led detectives to a 24-year-old woman who told police that 'Dusty' did the shooting. The woman came here to the police station, where she told detectives she had 'Dusty' on Facebook. When she pulled up his profile, police were able to identify the man as Dustin Gallegos Jr. According to court documents, the woman told police she met Gallegos Jr. to buy narcotics atan apartment on West 2nd Street where multiple people were, including a man who she had given money to the night before for drugs. That man was the victim in this case. 'There was a discussion between them, they went outside, the woman went to a car,' Sam Clemens with the Sioux Falls Police Department said. 'The two men went a little distance away and then there were gunshots that happened. The victim was shot in the leg. The suspect and the woman left.' Clemens says the two men and the woman knew each other, so since this wasn't a random crime, there's a little less worry when it comes to public safety. 'Because they know each other, it's a little bit different. If it was a stranger crime, where there was no connection between the two of them, we'd probably be a little bit more concerned about the public,' Clemens said. 'In this case, it doesn't seem that there's an overt threat to the public but we still want people to be aware of that and certainly if they know where he's at, to call police.' Gallegos is listed as an active parolee after serving time in prison on meth charges. His arrest warrant is for two counts of aggravated assault. It includes a $100,000 cash bond.
