Broken and biased: Health Secretary RFK Jr. vows to reform Vaccine Court

India Today7 days ago
US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. launched a scathing attack on the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) on Monday, calling the federal system 'broken,' 'corrupt,' and 'inefficient.' He pledged to lead a sweeping overhaul to restore its original mission of supporting victims of vaccine injuries.Kennedy, a long-time vaccine sceptic and former lawyer for vaccine injury plaintiffs, said the program, along with its adjudication arm, commonly known as the 'Vaccine Court' has strayed far from its founding intent. In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), he accused the system of prioritising government finances over children's health and justice.advertisement'The VICP has devolved into a morass of inefficiency, favouritism, and outright corruption,' Kennedy wrote. 'Government lawyers and the Special Masters who serve as Vaccine Court judges prioritize the solvency of the HHS Trust Fund over their duty to compensate victims.'
The VICP was established in 1986 after Congress granted vaccine manufacturers immunity from direct lawsuits. It was meant to ensure swift and fair compensation for individuals harmed by vaccines. It is funded by a 75-cent surcharge on each vaccine dose and has disbursed over $5.4 billion to more than 12,000 petitioners. However, Kennedy claims the system no longer serves those it was designed to help.'Instead of quickly and fairly awarding compensation,' Kennedy said, 'Special Masters dismiss over half of the cases. Most of those that proceed typically take 5+ years to resolve, with many languishing for more than 10 years.'Kennedy pointed to structural flaws within the programme, noting that claimants face the vast resources of the US Department of Justice not the vaccine manufacturers themselves. He also criticised the court's lack of transparency, saying there is 'no discovery,' and that petitioners' lawyers are denied access to critical CDC data on vaccine injuries.'The structure itself hobbles claimants,' he argued. 'Attorney compensation is in the hands of notoriously biased Special Masters... who can leverage this power to turn petitioner attorneys against their clients' interests.'He further alleged that expert witnesses for injured children are 'intimidated' and risk losing research funding if they testify.'The government pays its own medical expert witnesses promptly while simultaneously slow-walking payments for petitioners' experts sometimes for years,' Kennedy said.Despite the challenges, Kennedy vowed reform. 'The VICP is broken, and I intend to fix it,' he declared, adding that he was working with former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and HHS staff to 'steer the Vaccine Court back to its original Congressional intent.''I will not allow the VICP to continue to ignore its mandate and fail its mission of quickly and fairly compensating vaccine-injured individuals,' he concluded.- EndsMust Watch

Raw Milk Tied to E. Coli and Campylobacter Outbreak in Florida, Sickening 21

(Bloomberg) -- Raw milk has been linked to an ongoing E. coli and campylobacter outbreak in Florida that has already sickened 21 people, including six children under the age of 10, the state department of health said. Seven people have been hospitalized and at least two developed severe infections, which can lead to kidney failure, the Florida Department of Health announced on Monday. The agency urged residents to make informed decision about consuming raw milk, which can be tainted with the bacteria that causes both potentially deadly infections. While the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to drink pasteurized milk to protect themselves, the popularity of raw milk has grown as wellness influencers, podcasters and celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow tout its supposed benefits. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the US secretary of Health and Human Services, is a self-proclaimed fan. The Florida health department noted that consumers report benefits of raw milk consumption, including better taste and protective effects for asthma and allergies, in a press release before detailing the complications tied to the outbreak stemming from one farm. 'Sanitation practices in this farm are of particular concern due to the number of cases,' the agency said. It didn't name the farm. The infections were diagnosed in northeast and central Florida. Severe infections of E. coli can result in hemolytic uremic syndrome, which causes kidney failure. Young children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at most risk for both infections, according to the CDC. The US Food and Drug Administration has banned raw milk sales across state lines since 1987. Advocates believed Kennedy's ascension to the top spot governing the nation's health policy would lead the FDA to drop the ban on interstate sales, but no plans have been made public. Individual state regulations vary widely. In Florida, it's illegal to sell raw milk for human consumption. However, it is legal for pet consumption, creating a loophole for people to still buy raw milk for themselves, said food safety lawyer Bill Marler. Kennedy's raw milk supplier, Mark McAfee said the secretary encouraged him to apply for a position with the FDA to oversee raw milk policy and standards last fall. McAfee, a producer from California, said he was denied a meeting with the agency and told raw milk wasn't a priority for the administration. More stories like this are available on

"India Left With No Friends": Farooq Abdullah On US Imposing 25% Tariffs

Srinagar: After US President Donald Trump announced 25 percent tariffs on India, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah on Monday expressed concerns over India being left with "no friends", claiming that Trump has grown closer to Pakistan. He said that India has tried to show that it is stronger than its neighbouring countries instead of reflecting that these nations ought to be together to deal with issues of an economic nature. "We have no friends left, even our neighbours are not our friends. What we have tried to do is to show that we are stronger than they are, rather than thinking that all of us have to be together. That's why Indira Gandhi created SAARC, which aimed to bring all nations closer to us. It was meant to think about the economic issues and how to sort them out," Mr Abdullah told ANI. "Suddenly, Trump has become much more friendly with Pakistan. They want us not to take Russian oil. Yet they have promised Pakistan they will send crude (oil) to them and refine it, leading to their prices of petrol and diesel to come down. Already, China is behind them," he added. Mr Abdullah said that the nation suffers due to the problem between Trump and PM Narendra Modi. He added that the 25 per cent tariffs imposed on India were causing the value of the rupee to fall, which is affecting everyone. "It is a problem between the two leaders - Trump and Modi. They are both strong leaders, and that is why they don't want to bow down to each other. The nation suffers in that. We have a 25 per cent tariff on our goods going to America, plus an additional penalty. In the process, the rupee is falling and the dollar is rising. This is affecting everyone," Mr Abdullah argued. Trump had earlier said that Washington is continuing trade negotiations with India. Asked if the US remains open to negotiating with India on the tariff front, Trump stated, "We're talking to them now. We'll see what happens. Again, India was the highest or just about the highest tariff nation in the world, one of the highest, 100 points, 150 points or percentages. So India was one of the highest in the world. They had 175 per cent and higher than that." After announcing a 25 per cent tariff and penalties for purchasing Russian oil, he emphasised that India is one of the countries imposing high tariffs on the US. He made the comments during a press conference at the White House, held to mark the signing of a Congressional bill. Earlier, Trump made a shocking statement on his social media platform Truth Social after the announcement of 25 per cent tariffs against India and threatened an additional "penalty" for importing Russian oil. "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India; their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world." Trump said.

Shashi Tharoor apologises to Team India after nail-biting 6-run win vs England

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday hailed India's sensational six-run win over England in the fifth and final Test at The Oval, celebrating the team's gritty comeback to level the series 2-2. London: India's Mohammed Siraj poses after being named the 'player of the match' following India's win in the fifth Test match against England, at The Oval cricket ground, in London, England, Monday, Aug. 4, 2025. The series ended in a 2-2 draw. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar)(PTI08_04_2025_000356A)(PTI) Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor praised the Indian squad's spirit and particularly lauded pacer Mohammed Siraj, whose standout performance sealed the result. 'Words fail me… WHAT A WIN! 🇮🇳🏏 Absolutely exhilarated & ecstatic for #TeamIndia on their series-clinching victory against England!' Tharoor posted on X (formerly Twitter). 'The grit, determination, and passion on display were simply incredible. This team is special,' he wrote. Tharoor, who had earlier expressed doubts about India's chances, admitted he was mistaken: 'I am sorry that I expressed a spasm of doubt about the outcome yesterday. But Mohammed Siraj never stopped believing! Shabash to our heroes.' India's win came after a high-voltage final morning in London, with England needing just 35 runs with four wickets in hand. But Siraj, channeling what Tharoor described as unwavering belief, spearheaded a stunning turnaround with a lethal spell that saw India snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Siraj, who took nine wickets in the match, was named Player of the Match and later revealed that he had begun the day by setting an intention. 'I woke up in the morning and checked Google on my phone and took out a 'Believe' emoji wallpaper and told myself that I will do it for the country,' the 31-year-old said, beaming with pride and exhaustion. Despite the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, India's attack - led by Siraj and supported ably by Prasidh Krishna - dismantled England's lower order. The final blow came when Siraj bowled Gus Atkinson with a perfect yorker, ending the game with England just six runs short of the target.
