Sting: Governments have neglected the North East for decades
Sting is in a reflective mood. The Grammy-Award-winning singer-songwriter grew up in Wallsend, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and tells me he is "very proud" of his Tyneside roots. But the musician is less complimentary about the way the North East of England has been, as he puts it, "wilfully neglected by successive governments for decades".As he announces a significant donation to an arts institution in Gateshead, he also told the BBC: "The statistics for child poverty in the area are discouraging". It's clear from our communication that Sting wants to give back to the place and the culture that made him.
The former Police frontman is donating an undisclosed amount to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, sometimes described as the Tate Modern of the North East of England. It's nearly 50 years since The Police released their debut album featuring tracks such as Roxanne and Can't Stand Losing You. Those decades have brought him everything a boy who dreamed of musical success could have wished for; he's sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, as The Police frontman and bassist, and later as a solo artist.
In 2022, he also made a reported $300m (£222m), selling his back catalogue to Universal Music Group. The years haven't been as kind to the region where he was raised and where a third of babies, children and young people grow up in poverty, according to recent data from the End Child Poverty Coalition. When Sting was born Gordon Sumner in 1951, the son of a milkman and a hairdresser, the North East still had a proud tradition of shipbuilding. He's previously said that his earliest memory was "a massive ship at the end of my street, towering over the houses and blotting out the sun".But after the decline of that industry, Sting - the yellow and black sweater he wore while performing in a jazz band as a teenager earned him the nickname and it stuck - tells me, despite "all the empty promises of 'levelling up'", for years governments have disregarded the North East, "ignoring its significant historical contribution to national life, both industrial and cultural".In response to Sting's criticisms, a government spokesman said it would "fix the crisis we have inherited". It's investing £140m in the seven most deprived towns in the North East, including Washington and Jarrow, as part of a wider £1.5bn investment across the country and told the BBC it is "taking decisive action to tackle the scourge of child poverty".
He remembers a childhood rich in culture, despite his humble beginnings. "We didn't have any books in the house", he tells me by email, but "I was fortunate in the 60s to have had access to Wallsend library". He also recalls access to drama at the People's Theatre in Jesmond, one of the oldest non-professional theatre companies in the UK, visits to the Laing Art Gallery and also making his professional debut as a musician in the orchestra pit at The University Theatre."All of these institutions gave me a sense of the world beyond the shipyard where I was raised."The River Tyne's most famous shipyard, Swan Hunter in Wallsend, shut in 1993. Sting describes the now disappeared shipyard to me as "a real and symbolic victim of Government neglect if not betrayal".He tells me "I had to leave the area to 'make it'" - he moved to London in 1977 and soon after formed The Police with guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland - but his ties to the North East still apparently run deep.
As a young Wallsend local, he tells me his love of music was fostered when he saw the virtuoso Spanish classical guitarist Andrés Segovia perform with the chamber orchestra that was then still called the Northern Sinfonia, at Newcastle's City Hall aged 14.A year later, in 1967, his mind was blown when Jimi Hendrix played the legendary (and long-gone) gig venue Club a'Gogo. The American guitar prodigy had been brought to the UK by the Newcastle-born bass player of The Animals, Chas Chandler. Fifteen-year old grammar school boy Sumner couldn't believe what he was seeing, later describing how he "lay in my bed that night with my ears ringing and my world view significantly altered".In 2023, North Tyneside Council honoured the cultural impact of his work and his connection to the region, granting him the Freedom of the Borough.
At 73, he appears to be thinking deeply about the importance of cultural experiences for children growing up in the North East now. He says he has a debt to the region that he needs to pay back, telling me that art involves "the nourishing of creative sparks that can lie dormant in even the poorest households if not encouraged by exposure to human potential".Which brings him to the Baltic, which, like museums and art institutions across the UK, is facing challenging financial times in an era of diminishing public investment. It opened in 2002 in a converted flour mill, a key part of the regeneration of the Gateshead quayside on the south bank of the River Tyne. The Baltic showcases some of the world's best contemporary art - Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley were amongst the first to exhibit there - and also takes an innovative approach to enticing people into the artspace.
There's a café called The Front Room, with free tea, coffee and biscuits sponsored by a local company and breakfast clubs for hungry children in the school holidays. Sewing circles, book clubs, parent toddler groups and others use the space free of charge. In the past, local pit villages and council estates have been leafleted to advertise the Baltic as a centre for everyone. More than 300,000 children and young people take part in Baltic activities and programmes every year.Sting's donation kickstarts its plans to fundraise for a £10m Endowment Fund of private investment to safeguard free entry to the centre and ensure its community work can thrive into the future."The creative arts are of vital importance to the wellbeing of the community as a whole," he tells me and the Baltic "should be a beacon of hope for regeneration".
He's currently on a world tour with his trio Sting 3.0. Amongst a packed schedule across the US, Asia and Europe, with summer dates in the UK including headlining at the Isle of Wight Festival and Latitude, he'll be heading to Tyneside for one night in October for a gala performance at the Baltic to help raise more funds, with tickets at £10,000 a table. He's been musing on his roots for some time. His concept album turned musical, The Last Ship, was inspired by the Tyneside shipyards of his childhood.
It wasn't entirely well-received critically - or at the box office - when it premiered in the US in 2014. But it's since toured the UK, including to Newcastle, and Sting will perform in it again early next year in Paris. He wants to sing more widely about the innovative spirit he sees in the North East, telling me: "Geordies are not strangers to innovation, the steam turbine and the locomotive were developed on Tyneside. Britain's success was largely built on these inventions."

Love Island fans spot tell tale signs villa beauty HATED snog with show hunk – did you?
LOVE Island viewers are convinced one Islander was not feeling it whilst snogging a show hunk on the terrace. During Wednesday night's episode, Dejon Noel-Williams, 26, and Megan Forte Clarke, 24, snuck off for a quiet chat - or so their co-stars thought. 4 4 The flirty mood quickly turned awkward as the pair discussed their connection, before sharing the very unconvincing smooch. PT Dejon started the chat, telling musical theatre performer Meg: 'I like the way that things are going.' She replied, 'Yeah, same. I feel the exact same.' But the tension was hard to ignore as she added, 'I feel like we talk… everyone else's f*****g business.' Trying to take things to the next level, Dejon asked if she still wanted to share a bed with him, to which she said yes. Then came the kiss - and that's when fans say the red flags really started waving. Before Dejon leaned in, Meg awkwardly asked, 'Oh, you're going to kiss me?' And once the kiss was over, she laughed and said, 'Is that enough?' Fans took to Instagram to dissect the painfully awkward moment, with one writing beneath some grabs of the scene: ''Oh ur gonna kiss me' & 'was that enough' – she DID NOT want that." Another added: 'That was so false hahaha she doesn't like him. Her face afterwards said it all.' A third agreed: 'SO TRUE she don't like him like that.' ITV2 viewers previously slammed Meg after she made a huge U-turn in bid to stay in the villa. And it came just a day after she seemed "underwhelmed" when she chose Dejon in last night's launch. On Monday night, Meg chose Dejon, but when they met for the first time, fans were convinced there was no attraction on either side. In fact, she then went onto tell the rest of the girls later in the episode that she wasn't really "feeling him". But as Tuesday's recoupling loomed, Meg seemed to change her tune. In fact when she saw US bombshell Toni chatting to Djon, she was heard saying to her fellow Islanders: 'I don't have my man, Dejon's gone - that's it!' This didn't go unnoticed by fans, who took to social media to vent about her "game plan" One said: "Meg doesn't like Dejon but she's got to secure her place in the Villa, baddd!" While another chimed in: "All Meg is worried about is going home, she don't care about Dejon." This one added: "Meg defo has a game plan! "She's being all sweet to Dejon to stay on the show." Later, Dejon and Meg were up on the terrace and Meg continued her fight not to get dumped, and upped her game. So much so, Dejon was heard reassuring her: "You haven't got anything to worry about, you're my favourite, one thing about me is I'll always be honest with my feelings.' It comes hot on the heels of viewers venting that Meg had "no interest" in Dejon last night. It came after she looked disappointed when she picked him in the recoupling. Again venting on social media, fans shared their thoughts. "Meg doesn't fancy him at ALL," said one. "meg's face changeddd when dejon walked out," said another. A third person added: "Meg is not into Dejon in the SLIGHTEST." "Yeah Meg doesn't like Dejon, he is definitely not her type but she cannot outrightly say it," said a fourth. ‘I can't see the difference…' – Man Utd fans fume as new 2025/26 kit is released with ‘nod to Old Trafford'
MANCHESTER UNITED have released their home kit for the 2025/26 campaign. The Red Devils announced the release with a dramatic video, showing a giant shirt held aloft inside Old Trafford. 5 5 5 The new strip pays tribute to the Theatre of Dreams, and sees United return to a red and black theme. In a change from last season the iconic Adidas stripes on the arms are black instead of white, as are the cuffs of the sleeves. For some the shirt is strikingly similar to last season, although the 2023/24 kit is perhaps a better comparison given that also bore black stripes. Adidas state the "home kits are crafted with the best of sporting technology, with AEROREADY materials that leave you feeling cool, dry, and comfortable on matchday, whether you're on the pitch or in the stands". They retail for £85 or £90 depending on sleeve length, while the 'authentic' top will set fans back £120 or £130 - the latter is the long sleeve which sold out within hours of being released. Captain Bruno Fernandes featured in the shirt promotion shoot, along with Amad, Patrick Dorgu and Leny Yoro. Some fans feel the jersey is a copycat from last year, with one saying: "I didn't spot a difference w 24/25 Home kit." Another added: "It's the 23/24 kit." Danniella Westbrook, 51, is finally getting her face rebuilt as she heads into 'very long' surgery - two years after admitting she hated the results of her last facial reconstruction
has revealed she's finally getting her face rebuilt as she heads into 'very long' surgery. The former EastEnders, 51, actress has in the past undergone various reconstructive operations in a bid to fix her 'collapsing' face due to her previous cocaine addiction and osteoporosis. In 2023, she admitted that she hated the results of the facial reconstruction she had that year, having up until that point waited seven years to find a surgeon willing to do the operation due to the condition of her septum. And taking to Instagram on Thursday, Danniella shared an image of herself clad in a hospital gown while new boyfriend Chasa Symonds held her hand, noting that it was a 'big day' for her as she prepared to go under the knife once again. She penned: 'Big day for me heading down for a very long surgery right now to rebuild my face. Then I can get back to work and we can get on with our life together @chasarealtal. I love you x.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In another story, she expressed her love for her partner amid his support for her after he expressed on Instagram how 'proud' her was of her amid her impending operation. Danniella wrote: 'Thank you babe, you have been beside me every step of the way, see you when I wake up xxx.' Meanwhile, boxer Chasa, whom it was reported last month that Danniella is 'ready to marry', uploaded a video in which he praised the soap star amid her upcoming procedure. Speaking into the camera, he said: 'Just want to say thank you to everyone for the support towards Danniella. This is something that she wanted to do for herself, it's been a long time coming. 'I love her for her, I met her for her.. She's beautiful inside and out. This is something she wants to do for herself.' Remarking on the trolling she's received, he continued: 'She's changed her mobile number, I'm going through the messages on Instagram before she sees them, deleting and blocking the haters, it's what we've got to do.' Getting back to her surgery, Chasa went on: 'It's exciting times, it's gonna be a long day. She will update you when she's ready, it's down to her. I'm not here to speak about anything or talk about anything, that's her. So just from me and from Danniella, thank you all for the supportive messages, we love you and she'll be back to you very soon. It's gonna be a long day!' Captioning his post, alongside the sentiments included in his video, Chasa also shared a powerful message which read: 'Be thoughtful, remember everybody can slip in life it's how you come back. Don't put someone down, bring them up if you can.' Last year it was reported that Danniella hated the result of her previous facial reconstructive surgery. The actress had a string of procedures in Turkey in April 2023 in a desperate bid to save her collapsing face. She underwent a thread lift, liposuction in her cheeks and lips, fat grafting on her chin and had her jawline etched after her septum originally collapsed from excessive drug use in 2002. The former Celebrity Big Brother housemate at the time wanted to have the reconstruction done for the last seven years, but was unable to find a surgeon who would operate because her septum had completely collapsed. She previously revealed she needed five operations to correct her 'collapsing' face due to a previous cocaine addiction and osteoporosis, and was planning to have it done on the NHS, however Danniella said she paid for the surgery all herself despite being offered freebies from clinics all over the world. Danniella's battle with drugs has been well-publicised, and she famously had her nose reconstructed after her septum collapsed from excessive cocaine use. At the height of her use it was reported she would take up to five grams of cocaine a day, blowing close to £250,000 on the drug. However, the star, who is now sober, revealed she is begging doctors to correct her damaged face as she gets her life back on track. The actress has said her botched Turkish surgery has left her hating her new look. But she has struggled to find a surgeon who will take on the challenge after her septum completely collapsed form her drug use. Taking to Instagram in June 2023, the actress shared a photo of herself taken before the surgery and said she couldn't believe what had been done to her. She wrote: 'Three months ago I looked like this and thought I looked awful. I'd give my world to look like this again... 'I can't believe what's been done to me with this surgery.' When she first woke up after the lengthy procedure, she said she looked 'like she had done 10 rounds with Tyson Fury'. Danniella previously underwent a rib-insertion procedure in 2018, after osteoporosis rotted away her cheekbones and gums and, after spending time getting lip filler and Botox, in addition to surgery on her face, she is hoping to get back to her best. Meanwhile, last month, it was reported that Danniella had finally found her 'soulmate' and is now planning to marry the bareknuckle boxer who 'doesn't judge her'. She was even said to be planning additional surgery to get herself looking her best ahead of what could be her third marriage. An insider told OK! magazine: 'Danniella feels that she's found her soulmate. Chasa doesn't judge her one bit and doesn't care what has happened in her past. 'He understands all about the issues she's been through but is supportive – he just wants to make her happy. 'She's really smitten and feels like she can trust him, which is a really big deal for her.' The TV star hinted that the romance was getting serious on Instagram where she shared snaps from her Greek getaway with Chasa. The pair reportedly began as friends, having known each other for six years, before deciding to take their relationship to the next level. This was confirmed by Chasa himself, who wrote on Instagram: 'Sometimes that one friend is just too good to let go.' Last year it was reported that Danniella hated the result of her previous facial reconstructive surgery.
