13:
Elliss set a career high vs. the Bills on Jan. 5, with a 13 tackles, the most of the season in a game for any Patriot.
70:
Tavai is the only NFL player in the last decade to play at least 70 percent of the snaps on offense or defense and 70 percent of the snaps on special teams, which he accomplished in 2023.
The skinny:
After an offseason of turnover, no area of the roster provides a better example of new coach Mike Vrabel's football philosophy than the linebackers. The Patriots acquired multiple players who might best be described as Vrabel guys in Spillane, Gibbens, and Landry. All of them played for Vrabel earlier in their careers.

Of the newcomers, Spillane figures to be a central figure. The former Raider was in the middle of the action at spring practices, and he saw his playing time increase when Tavai went down with a lower-body injury. Look for Spillane to wear the green dot on his helmet this season.
Landry, who has 50.5 sacks in six seasons, should provide a boost off the edge in passing situations. Gibbens should provide depth in the middle, as well as special teams value. (He played almost 40 percent of the special teams snaps for the Titans in 2024). One new face that was a bit of a surprise this spring was Chaisson, as the former Raider and Jaguar flashed positively off the edge and could evolve into a nice depth addition.
As for the impact returnees, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Jennings will be part of the conversation as an edge presence on early downs. Meanwhile, Tavai (who had a career-high 115 tackles in 2024) is looking to win back the fan base
Elliss has had a career renaissance the last couple of seasons, going from fringe journeyman to every-down linebacker to being the subject of a mild bidding war between the Patriots and Raiders that saw him return to New England on a two-year, $13.5 million deal. He appeared to slot in nicely next to Spillane during spring practices, another sign his role will continue to grow.

In many ways, this is a group that is made in the image of Vrabel: not splashy, but smart, tough, and versatile. If they can be half as successful as Vrabel was when he played, it should help the defense take a big step forward.
How does this position rate against the rest of the league?
With the additions of Landry, Spillane, and Gibbens, this group probably went from the bottom third to near the middle of the pack.
Quote of note:
'This is an exciting group to be around, and I'm excited going into this season. You just look at it, and you just feel the excitement and the production you could have going out there, and knowing everybody out there has that playmaking ability.'
— Landry, speaking in June about the defense.
Biggest story lines:
Is Landry capable of delivering a burst off the edge as a complementary player for the likes of Keion White and Christian Barmore? In his first year with the Patriots, can Spillane grow into the leadership role that's usually asked from an inside linebacker? Will there be a battle for the other inside linebacker spot opposite Spillane?

Dolphins agree to terms with Mike Hilton
The Dolphins doubled up on experienced additions to their cornerback corps on Saturday. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said that his client Mike Hilton has agreed to terms with the team. That news came after the Dolphins confirmed that they have signed former Patriots and Raiders corner Jack Jones. Hilton spent the last four seasons with the Bengals and his first four seasons with the Steelers. He had 73 tackles and an interception last season and has 520 tackles, 13 interceptions, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries for his career. The Dolphins came into camp with questions at corner after trading Jalen Ramsey. They lost Artie Burns to a torn ACL in their first training camp practice and Kader Kohou left Saturday's session after suffering an apparent leg injury, but they have not given any update on his condition.

Dolphins agree to contract with ex-Raiders defender
The post Dolphins agree to contract with ex-Raiders defender appeared first on ClutchPoints. Amid an injury-riddled training camp, the Miami Dolphins are adding another veteran to their defense. Days after losing former first-round pick Artie Burns to a torn ACL, the Dolphins signed former Las Vegas Raiders and New England Patriots cornerback Jack Jones. Jones agreed to a one-year contract with Miami, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. The 27-year-old cornerback started 16 of the Raiders' 17 games in 2024 and was easily one of the top defensive players still on the market. Jones is coming off the best statistical season of his career, recording 69 tackles, three interceptions and 16 pass breakups in 2024. He returned one of his interceptions for a touchdown to give him a league-high three pick-sixes in the last two years. While the Dolphins signed Jones right after Burns' injury, he is also somewhat of a replacement for Jalen Ramsey and Kendall Fuller. Ramsey and Fuller started 11 games together in 2024 to lead Miami's secondary, which allowed the 10th-fewest pass yards per game. Neither player returns in 2025, with Fuller still a free agent and Ramsey getting traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Without Ramsey or Fuller, only two of the 12 cornerbacks on the Dolphins' offseason roster have more than two years of NFL experience. Jones will now become the de facto leader of the group, despite his inexperience within the organization. Jack Jones joins Dolphins' evolving 2025 defense The Dolphins' defense enters its second year under defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver in 2025, following an up-and-down season. Miami ended 2024 with a top-10 scoring defense, allowing the sixth-fewest points per game, but struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout the season. The biggest additions the Dolphins gained in the offseason were the returns of edge-rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, who both missed most of the 2024 season with injuries. Miami also added star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick after selecting defensive tackle Kenneth Grant in the 2025 NFL Draft. Fitzpatrick, the Dolphins' No. 11 overall pick in 2018, returns to the team through the Ramsey trade. Coming off a career year, Jones should immediately slot into the Dolphins' starting lineup. He will likely line up on the outside, opposite of second-year cornerback Storm Duck. After being one of the best units in 2024, Miami's secondary will likely struggle in 2025, but Jones' presence should improve one of the most inexperienced positional groups in the league. Former Patriots CB reportedly signing with AFC East rival
Former New England Patriots starting cornerback Jack Jones is reportedly returning to the AFC East on a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Disaster struck in the Dolphins' secondary after veteran cornerback Artie Burns tore his ACL on the first day of training camp. The team also traded seven-time Pro Bowl corner Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a blockbuster deal that also included tight end Jonnu Smith in June. They got star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick in return, but the cupboard was left bare at cornerback. Now enters Jones, a former Patriots fourth-round draft pick. The latest stint for the 27-year-old defensive back was with the Las Vegas Raiders. He started in a total of 19 games and recorded 94 tackles, five interceptions and 20 pass deflections during his run with the team. Jones won't have long to wait to face his former team with the Patriots scheduled to visit South Beach in Week 2 of the regular season. The rematch between the division rivals is slated for a date to be determined to close out the season in Week 18. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
