Drought gets much worse in Aspen and Glenwood Springs as dry conditions persist across western half of Colorado
Severe drought conditions rose by about 2%, but it's the nearly 8% spike in extreme drought that's most concerning. The worst of these worsening conditions are now centered in Pitkin and Eagle counties, where the drought status intensified from severe to extreme in just the past week.
Currently, more than half of Colorado is experiencing some level of drought, highlighting the ongoing impact of a dry summer season across much of the western half of the state. The Western Slope saw particularly dry weather this past week, further deepening existing drought concerns in the region. However, there was a glimmer of improvement on the Eastern Plains — with Yuma and Kit Carson counties seeing enough moisture to ease conditions slightly, shifting from moderate drought to abnormally dry.

The heat impacting Colorado will continue for two more days before some slight relief arrives on Tuesday. Sunday will top out in the upper 90s across the Front Range. The record for the day is 98 degrees, set back in 1964. Monday could be another day of record-tying or breaking heat. The current record is 100 degrees. Several towns and cities on the Eastern Plains are expected to see triple-digit heat both Sunday and Monday. Tuesday, some slight relief arrives, and temperatures will return to normal for this time of year. Overnight Tuesday, a front will drop into the state, dropping temperatures into the 80s and upper 70s. The biggest change we will see is rain showers across the state. Some of the rain could be heavy at times, and localized flooding is possible. The rain is highly needed for the western half of the state, where high fire danger and drought continue.

Evacuations ordered for southwest Colorado residents due to wildfires burning in La Plata County
Colorado officials issued evacuation orders for some residents in La Plata County on Saturday due to two wildfires burning in the area. A wildfire north of Durango that broke out Saturday reportedly started as a house fire in the Elkhorn subdivision before it spread into the nearby forest. Authorities ordered residents across a large area to the east of Highway 550 to evacuate around 6 p.m. According to county officials, pre-evacuation orders are also in place for several areas east of the highway between Rockwood and Hermosa. The Elkhorn fire has burned approximately 75 acres so far. Another wildfire, which began Saturday on the Southern Ute Reservation, has prompted officials to order the evacuation of residents in the area of 3700 Country Road 318 and all residents on Lenyx Lane. The Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch said that air tankers are dropping retardant on the Rim Road Fire, and multiple resources are responding to the scene. Heavy smoke is visible south of Durango due to the fire, which has burned approximately 100 acres. The Southern Ute Indian Tribe urged residents not to stop along the side of the road to take photos or videos of the fire, as it hinders emergency response operations and poses safety risks.

Heat continues through the weekend, with high fire danger in western Colorado
The heat continues for Colorado this weekend, and so does the mostly dry weather. As a result, the fire danger is incredibly high for the western half of the state, which is why a Red Flag Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. While a large portion of the state will be dry Saturday, there is a chance a few of us could see an isolated afternoon storm. The best chance for storms will be in the mountains and on the eastern plains. Some of the storms could turn severe in the far northeast corner. It is going to feel like summertime in Colorado with temperatures in the 90s both Saturday and Sunday. The current record for Sunday is 98 degrees, and there is a chance to tie it. The heat sticks around until Wednesday, when the ridge of high pressure that's kept Colorado hot breaks down some. Not only will temperatures drop into the 80s, we will also see rain showers with the return of monsoonal moisture. This will be a welcome sight after a couple of dry and hot days.
