Where is American Idol's Hong Kong star William Hung now? After finding fame with an off-key version of Ricky Martin's She Bangs, he beat addiction, married again and is now an LA crime analyst

As American Idol prepares to return for its 23rd season, it's easy to forget just how many careers the show has launched since 2002. Superstars including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and
Adam Lambert got their start on the programme – all born performers who, looking back, seemed destined to be famous.
But the fame of one contestant from those early days wasn't so assured – that of pop lover William Hung.
As a 21-year-old, his singing failed to win over the judges so spectacularly that
Simon Cowell called his performance 'grotesque'. Yet he's managed to turn his appearance into a singing career and widespread fame and affection regardless.

Here's what you need to know about Hung's showbiz journey and where he is now.
William Hung rose to fame with a Ricky Martin song
William Hung was studying civil engineering at the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, when he decided to take two days off in 2004 to audition for American Idol. But when he let rip on his favourite song –
Ricky Martin's 'She Bangs' – his off-key rendition became an instant classic for all the wrong reasons.
'You can't sing, you can't dance, so what do you want me to say?' Cowell remarked cruelly afterwards. 'I gave my best so I have no regrets at all,' was Hung's endearing response.
He had a musical career – albeit an ironic one

As noted by NBC last year, Hung's brief appearance and post-performance poise was enough to rocket him to stardom. Not only was he parodied on Saturday Night Live, he also sang on several talk shows and at sports events. He even signed a recording deal with Fuse Music Network and Koch Records.

Why Nobody 2's Bob Odenkirk doesn't want to be another Jason Statham or Liam Neeson

As with his iconic comedy sketches for Saturday Night Live or Mr Show, just give actor Bob Odenkirk a moment with an idea and he will come up with a premise unique and funny enough to steal attention. Being able to draw out the funny side in characters such as the scheming Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul helped him find the balance between dark humour and extreme violence in the original Nobody (2021). 'I'm not a handsome guy or a young guy,' says Odenkirk, 62. 'I think I work well on the screen as a regular guy who has a certain amount of pressure.' In the second instalment of the franchise, Odenkirk returns as Hutch Mansell , the mild-mannered suburban husband and dad with a dark past who stumbles into trouble while taking his family on holiday. On cue, he releases his pent-up rage on irredeemable bad guys in a satisfying comic wave of cathartic violence that often leaves him just as battered and injured as his victims. Veteran actor Christopher Lloyd , Connie Nielsen and rapper RZA return from the first film, while Colin Hanks and Sharon Stone join the new film as villains. Bob Odenkirk says he thinks he works well on screen 'as a regular guy who has a certain amount of pressure'. Photo: TNS While the fights in the films are highly choreographed, when Mansell takes a punch to the face, is stabbed or shot, you can see him writhing in agony in a way most film heroes never would. It is something that Odenkirk specifically saw in the early stages of his character.

My First of May movie review: Aaron Kwok, Natalie Hsu can't save hokey family tear-jerker

2.5/5 stars In My First of May, a former star athlete sidelined by an old career-ending injury must emerge from his despair to care for the disabled teenage daughter he has long ignored. This gentle effort by James Hung Ling-ching (The Seventh Lie), the latest in a long line of Hong Kong films in the past decade to look to home for bittersweet sentiment, is a warm-hearted but clichéd family drama that makes little attempt to conceal its calculated moves to wring tears from its viewers. The writer-director has his trio of leading performers – Aaron Kwok Fu-shing , Natalie Hsu En-yi and Nina Paw Hee-ching – to thank for keeping the paper-thin plot watchable. Play Kwok plays Tang Suk-yin, a three-time Hong Kong squash champion who has fallen on hard times since retiring after a leg injury more than a decade ago. Around the same time, Tang's marriage to Elaine ( Gigi Leung Wing-kei ) crumpled under pressure after their baby daughter was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Fast forward to today and Tang lives alone in an illegal rooftop unit in an industrial building, scalping tickets for sports facilities to earn a meagre living. He is urged by his elderly mother, Suen Yau-mui (Paw), to move back into the family's public estate flat and assume responsibility for his now adolescent daughter, Chi (Hsu).

'Skibidi', 'tradwife' added to Cambridge dictionary

'Skibidi', 'tradwife' added to Cambridge dictionary The Cambridge Dictionary definition of 'skibidi' acknowledges the difficulty of pinning down a specific meaning to the term. Words popularised by Gen Z and Gen Alpha including "skibidi", "delulu", and "tradwife" are among 6,000 new entries to the online edition of the Cambridge Dictionary over the last year, its publisher said on Monday. Cambridge University Press said tradwife, a portmanteau of traditional wife, reflected "a growing, controversial Instagram and TikTok trend that embraces traditional gender roles". The dictionary also took on the challenge of defining skibidi, a word popularised in online memes, as a term which had "different meanings such as cool or bad, or can be used with no real meaning". The gibberish word was spread by a YouTube channel called "Skibidi Toilet" and is associated with the mindless, "brain rot" content found on social media and consumed by Gen Alpha's overwhelmingly digital lifestyle. The dictionary defined delulu, derived from the word delusional, as "believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to". As an example, it cited a 2025 speech in parliament where Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used the phrase "delulu with no solulu". "It's not every day you get to see words like skibidi and delulu make their way into the Cambridge Dictionary," said Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme manager at the Cambridge Dictionary. "We only add words where we think they'll have staying power. Internet culture is changing the English language and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the Dictionary." Other new phrases include "lewk", used to describe a unique fashion look and popularised by RuPaul's Drag Race, and "inspo", short for inspiration. Work from home culture has given rise to "mouse jiggler", referring to a way to pretend to work when you are not. There is also "forever chemical", man-made chemicals that stay in the environment for years and have gained traction as concerns grow about the irreversible impact of climate change on the health of humans and the plant.
