' Naukri, Rozgar, Kushal Bihar – Fir ek baar NDA sarkar" – Posters with these slogans came up outside the JDU office in Patna on Tuesday. Ordinarily, it would seem like an NDA poll pitch with the top two faces of the two alliance partners adorning the walls. But political history watchers were smiling.
Exactly 15 years ago, similar pictures of then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had sprung up across Patna. It was on the eve of BJP National executive and soon after Gujarat had donated Rs 5 crore to Bihar for flood relief. The giant hoardings and the newspaper ads showing Modi and Nitish hand in hand, smiling, reportedly riled the Bihar CM so much that the alliance was ruptured. Nitish Kumar, as per his aides, saw the ads as an attempt to show Bihar and his governance in poor light.
Much water has flown down the Ganga since then. Nitish has come back to the NDA fold and promised PM Modi from electoral rally stage never to sever ties again. The latest posters at JDU office is further acknowledgement that if BJP needs Nitish as the face of susashan (good governance) to keep away 'jungle raj", Nitish needs Modi more to keep an aggressive RJD away.
Opposition is taking pot-shots at JDU, making references to Nitish Kumar's health. Their charge – BJP will finish JDU as the latter flounders to find a successor for Nitish. The poster is one more weapon in their 'JDU will be over' arsenal.
Jungle Raj

The EC estimates 10 per cent of those in Bihar voter list, do not live in the state. CEC Gyanesh Kumar says law does not make any special provision for such cases. He says only ordinary residents can vote. If indeed SIR disallows the migrant Bihari from voting, the impact may not be on the vote bank of any one party.

The 1990-batch officer of Rajasthan cadre assumed charge in the evening and was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour at the police headquarters here. Sharma's appointment follows his premature repatriation from central deputation, where he served as the Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) in New Delhi. His return fills the leadership void created after former DGP UR Sahoo was appointed Rajasthan Public Service Commission chairperson on June 10 and the brief interim charge of the state police force held by DG (ACB) Ravi Prakash Meharda, who retired on June 30. In a formal order, the Department of Personnel announced that Sharma will serve as the head of state police for a period of two years, irrespective of his age of superannuation or until further orders, whichever is earlier. He has also been placed in the apex pay scale (Level 17) with a fixed monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh. Meanwhile, at least three FIRs were filed at Nilgiri police station on Thursday evening by separate persons — including two women — accusing Khatua of making derogatory and objectionable remarks against the woman. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed before a Delhi court on Thursday that the National Herald case is a "classic case of money laundering". Young Indian Pvt Ltd, in which ex-Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi held a 76% stake, was allegedly created to launder Rs 2,000 crore from Associated Journals Ltd, the company that published 'National Herald' newspaper. "This is a classic case where the offence of money laundering is made against all the accused," submitted additional solicitor general SV Raju, appearing for the ED before the court of special judge Vishal Gogne. He asked the court to take cognisance of the chargesheet. The court was hearing arguments on the point of cognisance of the chargesheet filed against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the money laundering case. The agency concluded its arguments in the case on Thursday. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi will make submissions before the court on Friday, appearing for Sonia Gandhi. The ED, through the ASG, submitted that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were beneficial owners and in ultimate control of Young Indian, and that after the deaths of other shareholders they had 100% control. Raju claimed Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were responsible for the conduct of business of Young Indian and the fraudulent takeover of properties valued at over Rs 2,000 crore of AJL was with their connivance and consent. The ASG alleged that the shareholding in the venture was just in name and that all the other accused were puppets of the Gandhi family. He added that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi control Congress and wanted to get hold of Rs 2,000 crore instead of the said Rs 92 crore. As per the ED, Congress provided an interest-free loan of Rs 90 crore to AJL, which had assets worth Rs 2,000 crore, for a consideration of just Rs 50 lakh. This debt was allegedly converted into equity in YI's favour. "They deprived AJL's shareholders of their right. YI invested just Rs 50 lakh and got Rs 2,000 crore. YI gained wrongfully and shareholders suffered," he said. The court asked Raju if the shareholders are also witnesses in this case. Calling the matter a little peculiar, the judge asked whether they should not also be made witnesses. "The ED has not investigated the 1,000 shareholders. So will this trial go on without them being witnesses," the court asked. The ASG replied, "The record speaks for itself. This is a classic case of money laundering. The real culprits are these seven persons (including Sonia and Rahul), once you pierce the veil. Today, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi hold almost all shares. They're the beneficial owners of the company."
