With two days still to go before its worldwide release on August 14, Coolie has overtaken the advance booking numbers of Vijay's Leo and Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1. More significantly, Rajinikanth has broken his own record set by Kabali in 2016, which held the previous top spot at $1.9 million for US premieres. Sharing the news on social media, Sun Pictures wrote, '#Coolie varraan solliko! #Coolie is the First Tamil film to cross $2 million in premiere pre-sales in North America. #Coolie releasing worldwide August 14th." By surpassing $2 million with days to spare, Coolie has secured its place ahead of Tamil cinema's previous premiere pre-sale leaders. After Kabali, the list had Leo (2023) in second place, The GOAT (2024) third, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 (2022) fourth, and Jailer (2023) fifth. About Coolie According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), Coolie follows 'a mysterious man [who] takes a stand against a corrupt syndicate exploiting and abusing the workers of a port town" in an intense action drama. The film marks Lokesh Kanagaraj's first collaboration with Rajinikanth and boasts an ensemble cast featuring Nagarjuna, Nimma Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and Aamir Khan in pivotal roles. With massive advance sales, star power, and Kanagaraj's action-packed storytelling, Coolie is set for a grand opening not just in India, but globally. The hype suggests August 14 could witness one of Tamil cinema's biggest premieres to date. First Published: August 12, 2025, 23:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Daniel Day-Lewis returns with Anemone after his 8-year acting retirement

Washington DC [US], August 12 (ANI): Actor Daniel Day-Lewis is back this year with a new movie that has just revealed its first image after retiring eight years movie titled 'Anemone' from Focus Features is set to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, which kicks off September 26 and runs through October 13, and marks the return of the three-time Oscar winner after an eight-year 'retirement," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Anemone is Day-Lewis' first feature film since 2017's Phantom Thread. Before the film's release, the actor had issued a statement: 'Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject," as per the outlet. He elaborated in an interview, 'I knew it was uncharacteristic to put out a statement. But I did want to draw a line. I didn't want to get sucked back into another project. All my life, I've mouthed off about how I should stop acting, and I don't know why it was different this time, but the impulse to quit took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do … I dread to use the overused word 'artist,' but there's something of the responsibility of the artist that hung over me. I need to believe in the value of what I'm doing. The work can seem vital. Irresistible, even. And if an audience believes it, that should be good enough for me. But, lately, it isn't."The film marks the feature directorial debut of Lewis's son, Ronan Day-Lewis, and was co-written by both official description of Anemone calls the film 'an absorbing family drama … about lives undone by seemingly irreconcilable legacies of political and personal violence." Set in Northern England, the film follows a middle-aged man (Sean Bean) who 'sets out from his suburban home on a journey into the woods, where he reconnects with his estranged hermit brother (Day-Lewis). Bonded by a mysterious, complicated past, the men share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship–one that was forever altered by shattering events decades earlier," as per the outlet. 'An emotional powerhouse, this directorial debut is assured in both small details and grand gestures as it charts the path toward familial redemption against all odds. In addition to its unflinching lead performances, Anemone features standout supporting work from Samantha Morton and Samuel Bottomley, and sensationally expressive widescreen cinematography by Ben Fordesman," the description continues, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
