Bahrain: Go-ahead for MotoGP racing track proposal

Zawya20-03-2025

Bahrain could become home to an international MotoGP racing track, if municipal councillors have their way.
The Southern Municipal Council has unanimously approved a proposal to establish a dedicated racing circuit for motorcycles and quad bikes, aiming to provide a safe and controlled environment for enthusiasts who currently resort to public streets.
The initial proposal, submitted by councillor Hassan Al Dossary, was focused on creating a local facility where riders could race legally and safely.
However, council chairman Abdulla Abdullatif took the idea a step further, advocating for a full-fledged MotoGP-standard track that could host international events and position Bahrain as a major player in the global motorsports scene, which was also unanimously approved.
'We see young riders and motorsport enthusiasts racing on highways, inner roads and even residential areas,' said Mr Al Dossary.
Mr Al Dossary
'This is not just dangerous for them, but for all road users.
'We need to provide them with a proper place where they can practise their passion without endangering themselves or others.'
Highlighting the popularity of motorcycles and quad bikes in Bahrain, he said:
'Many people invest in expensive, high-performance bikes, but they have no legal or suitable venue to ride at high speeds.
'A dedicated circuit would not only reduce illegal street racing, but also encourage safe riding practices, training programmes and even boost tourism through motorsports events.
'We need a large enough area, preferably away from residential zones, to avoid noise complaints while ensuring accessibility.
'The Southern Governorate has ample land available, and we believe this could be the ideal home for the circuit.'
Mr Abdullatif
Meanwhile, Mr Abdullatif believes Bahrain should aim for an internationally recognised MotoGP track, which could put the kingdom on the global motorsport map.
'The Middle East currently has only one MotoGP race, in Doha,' he said.
'Bahrain has already proven itself as a major motorsports hub with the Formula 1 Bahrain Gulf Air Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.'
He stressed that an international-standard track could bring significant economic benefits to Bahrain.
'Hosting a MotoGP event would attract thousands of tourists, motorsports teams and media from around the world, boosting our hospitality, aviation and retail sectors,' he said.
The councillors have formally requested the government to consider allocating land and financing for the project.
The next step involves government evaluation and feasibility studies, which will determine the financial and logistical aspects of the project.

Twice Superbike champ Razgatlioglu to ride for Pramac in MotoGP in 2026

Twice World Superbike champion Toprak Razgatlioglu will make the switch to MotoGP in 2026 after agreeing to join the Prima Pramac Racing team, Yamaha announced on Tuesday. Razgatlioglu, the first Turkish Superbike world champion who is known for his showmanship and has 63 wins, won his first title with Yamaha in 2021 before making the switch to BMW, winning the title again in 2024. Pramac made the switch from Ducati bikes to Yamaha this season. Razgatlioglu is currently second in the 2025 Superbike championship. "Toprak, the most victorious Yamaha rider of all time in Superbike, has proven to be an exceptional talent, securing the WorldSBK Title twice, which is no mean feat," Paolo Pavesio, the managing director of Yamaha Racing, said in a statement. Razgatlioglu had previously tested the Yamaha bike in 2023. Pramac currently have Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira as their riders this season, with Yamaha saying the 2026 lineup will be confirmed in due course. Marc Marquez wins Aragon Grand Prix to complete perfect weekend

Marc Marquez proved once again that he was the master of the circuit at MotorLand as the Ducati rider won the Aragon Grand Prix from pole to extend his lead in the championship on Sunday. Marquez's brother Alex finished second for Gresini Racing while Marc's teammate Francesco Bagnaia came third as Ducati bikes swept the podium. Marc had completed the perfect weekend last year to win his first race in 1,043 days at the same circuit and he repeated his feat as the polesitter and sprint winner claimed a record-extending seventh MotoGP victory at the track. Such was Marc's dominance this weekend that he became the first rider in 10 years to lead every session -- including warmups, practice and qualifying -- since he did it himself at the German Grand Prix in 2015. "It was an amazing weekend. Leading all the practices, full focus, just full concentration," said Marquez, who now leads Alex by 32 points in the championship. "As I expected, the others got closer and closer every session. In the race, the pace of Alex and Pecco (Bagnaia) was super fast, but it was consistent. (I was) just controlling the race distance. "And the celebration together with my brother was amazing. The best way to come back with full Ducatis in the top." The two Marquez brothers also danced arm-in-arm in front of the home fans sitting in a special stand dedicated to Spain's fastest brothers on two wheels. Heading into the race weekend, the Marquez brothers had also been involved in social media banter over who their mother would support and Marc had the last laugh when he handed her a red Ducati shirt at the winners' circle in the paddock. Marc had broken the lap record to take his 99th career pole before claiming a seventh sprint victory of the season on Saturday despite a poor start, but this time he shot off the line with a perfect launch to lead into turn one. Alex stayed in second place but behind them it was KTM's Pedro Acosta who sparred with Bagnaia for third as they constantly swapped positions, using each other's slipstream to overtake, but the more-experienced Bagnaia held on. Up front, Marc continued to set fastest laps as he streaked away with Alex unable to match his pace, as his brother slowly but surely extended his advantage at one of his favourite circuits which has a corner named after him. The younger Marquez sibling was soon looking over his shoulder to see Bagnaia eating up the distance between them while KTM's Brad Binder crashed in fifth place, leaving the crew chief of the struggling team fuming in the pit lane. But Alex quickly found his rhythm to stay in second while Bagnaia fended off Acosta to prevent an all-Spanish podium. Bagnaia, who is third in the championship, now sits 93 points behind Marc.

Marquez beats brother Alex for seventh sprint win of season

Ducati's world championship leader Marc Marquez recovered from a poor start to win Saturday's sprint at the Aragon Grand Prix ahead of his brother Alex and Fermin Aldeguer of Gresini Racing for an all-Spanish podium on home soil. Marc's seventh sprint victory of the season in eight rounds moved him 27 points clear of Alex in the championship, with the Ducati rider winning by more than two seconds. Marc Marquez had to work for it, but in the end, he claimed a seventh consecutive Sprint victory in 2025 after a dramatic and action-packed showdown. Marc had broken the lap record in qualifying to take pole but he started poorly, losing traction due to wheelspin, to briefly drop to fourth when he was shoulder-barged aside by Pedro Acosta. Alex, meanwhile, shot off the line to take the lead going into turn one but Marc moved up to second with a neat overtake on turn one of the second lap, setting his sights on Alex. Team Ducati Lenovo Team's Marc Marquez celebrates on the podium winning the sprint race of the MotoGP Aragon Grand Prix at the Motorland circuit in Alcaniz, northeastern Spain, on Saturday. AFP The younger brother managed to hold on for a few laps but Marc pounced once again on turn one, diving in on the inside at the start of the sixth lap to take first place as the home crowd roared in appreciation. 'I had a small problem in the start because I started spinning the rear tyre and then I was able to manage and not lose a lot of positions,' Marc said. 'My plan was try to lead from the beginning until the end but I saw that Alex was pushing a lot on the first two-three laps. That was my weak point, with the soft rear tyre. '(But I) was calm and then in the end of the race the feeling was great, it was perfect.' Once Marc moved into the lead, the two brothers disappeared into the distance, even as Marc continued to widen the gap, while Alex's Gresini team mate Aldeguer reeled in Franco Morbidelli and eased past him to take third with three laps left. VR46 Racing's Morbidelli finished fourth and Red Bull KTM's Acosta pipped Fabio Di Giannantonio to fifth place. Marc's team mate and twice MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia had another race to forget as the Italian, who started fourth on the grid, finished 12th as he continued to struggle with his Ducati bike. Bagnaia is still third in the championship but he now sits 84 points behind Marc. Reuters
