Senate opens 1st regular session of 20th Congress
Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero' pounded the gavel in the Senate session hall shortly past 10 a.m., as witnessed by 23 other senators present.
Senator Bam Aquino led the opening prayer, asking the Lord for strength and unity among senators to serve the country.
Then, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) resolution proclaiming the 12 winning senatorial candidates for the 2025 midterm elections was read.
Senators Bong Go, Bam Aquino, Ronald Dela Rosa, Erwin Tulfo, Francis Pangilinan, Rodante Marcoleta, Ping Lacson, Tito Sotto, Pia Cayetano, Camille Villar, Lito Lapid, and Imee Marcos took their oath of office thereafter.
Meanwhile, there was no red carpet rolled out this time at the Senate amid the recent weather systems affecting the country.
Aside from the spouses, relatives, and staff of the senators, several Cabinet members and foreign dignitaries were also present during the opening of the session.
On Monday afternoon, lawmakers both in the Senate and House of Representatives will hold a joint session at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City to hear Marcos' SONA.

Chiz to House: Senate not a playground to run after foes
"To these people, I say this, the Senate is not your playground to run after your political enemies. We are not an accomplice in any grand scheme,' Escudero said. Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero on Wednesday asked members of the House of Representatives to refrain from trying to use the Senate as a tool to go after political adversaries. Escudero made the remark as he explained his vote for archiving the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte. 'To the House of Representatives I say, do not allow yourselves to be used for the blind hatred and ambition of a few who did things haphazardly, gravely abused their discretion, and violated due process, rights under the Constitution as found by the High Court itself,' the Senate president said. 'In spite of all these, you expect everyone to roll over in obedience. When we did not, you moved hell and high water to destroy personalities, malign reputations, and tarnish institutions," he added. "To these people, I say this, the Senate is not your playground to run after your political enemies. We are not an accomplice in any grand scheme,' Escudero said. Escudero also said that he is not willing to play such politicians' game, stressing that he will 'never bow to a mob [and] never cower to the shrillest of voices.' To recall, the House of Representatives impeached Duterte on February 5, with over 200 lawmakers endorsing the complaint. The Vice President was accused of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes. Duterte, in return, had entered a 'not guilty' plea in the verified impeachment complaint filed against her, which she called merely a 'scrap of paper.' Recently, the Supreme Court declared the articles of impeachment against Duterte unconstitutional, stressing that it is barred by the one-year rule under the Constitution and that it violates her right to due process. The high court said the Senate cannot acquire jurisdiction over the impeachment proceedings. However, the SC said it was not absolving Duterte from any of the charges against her and that any subsequent impeachment complaint may be filed starting February 6, 2026. The House , through the Office of the Solicitor General, then filed a motion for reconsideration, seeking to reverse the SC decision. The lower chamber argued it should be allowed to perform its exclusive duty to prosecute an impeachable official, and the Senate's to try the case.

PH to procure more BrahMos missiles —Marcos
The Philippines is in the process of procuring more BrahMos missiles, President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Wednesday. ''I've spoken to the officers and men who operate the BrahMos system and they say we need more, their experience of it, thank God it has never been used but from the demonstrations that they've seen, from the training that they received both in India and the Philippines, the practice runs that they've done, they seemed confident with the equipment,'' Marcos said in an interview with India's Firstpost. ''I think we'll probably... we are in the process of actually procuring more,'' he added. With these assets, Marcos said the Philippines is merely modernizing its military sector and reacting to the challenges and tensions in the region, noting that it is not a preparation for war. ''The Philippines is in the midst of modernization of our military and so we are looking to see what's most suitable for our defensive needs. Let me be clear, we are not gearing up for war, we are simply reacting to the challenges that we are facing,'' Marcos said. In April 2024, the Indian government confirmed that the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles was successfully delivered to the Philippines. Another batch of weapons is about to arrive in the Philippines, the Department of National Defense (DND) said in April of this year.
