Jensen Ackles channels 80s action heroes in ‘Countdown' and ‘The Boys'
Jensen Ackles is embracing his inner '80s action hero in Amazon Prime Video's new crime thriller Countdown.
Known for playing Dean Winchester on Supernatural, Ackles stars as LAPD cop Mark Meachum, a terminally ill undercover officer on a covert task force trying to stop a terrorist threat. Meachum's gritty, unpredictable nature draws on Ackles' childhood inspirations—like Kurt Russell, Bruce Willis, and Mel Gibson.
Ackles admits he modeled Meachum after iconic characters from Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Airwolf, saying, 'Those were the guys I wanted to be growing up.' That retro energy also shaped his character Soldier Boy in The Boys, who returns in Season 5 after a shocking post-credits cameo in the Season 4 finale. 'Think Lee Marvin and Sean Connery if they time-traveled to 2025,' Ackles says.
In Countdown, Ackles shares the screen with Jessica Camacho, who plays DEA agent Amber Oliveras. Their tense dynamic adds fresh energy to the usual buddy-cop formula. 'She came in and played it like a tough guy,' he notes. 'She brought the heat.'
Ackles will also reunite with Supernatural co-stars Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins in The Boys' final season. 'We had a blast on Supernatural, but I told them this is someone else's house—respect it.'
Countdown is streaming now on Prime Video. The Boys Season 5 begins production soon, with spinoff Vought Rising following in August.

Eric Dane says 'Euphoria' made him feel like an artist for the first time in his career
In a candid new interview, actor Eric Dane opened up about his evolving identity as an actor, revealing that working on HBO's Euphoria was the first time he truly felt like an artist. Gen V season 2 release date announced with trailer addressing Chance Perdomo's death
Amazon has confirmed that Gen V Season 2 will debut September 17 on Prime Video. The first three episodes of the college-set spinoff of The Boys will premiere together, with the remaining episodes released weekly on Wednesdays, leading up to the October 22 finale. Season 2 intensifies tensions between humans and supes as Godolkin University becomes a battleground under new leadership. A mysterious new dean introduces a radical curriculum promising to make students more powerful than ever. While Cate and Sam are celebrated as heroes, Marie, Jordan, and Emma return to campus carrying the trauma of past events. The discovery of a secret program dating back to the university's founding hints at larger conspiracies—ones that Marie may be deeply connected to. Returning cast members include Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, Lizze Broadway as Emma Meyer, Maddie Phillips as Cate Dunlap, London Thor and Derek Luh as Jordan Li, Asa Germann as Sam Riordan, and Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity. Hamish Linklater joins the cast as Dean Cipher. The new season also addresses the real-life passing of cast member Chance Perdomo, who portrayed Andre Anderson.
