Projek Rak Rahmah, initiated by the Student Representative Council of UPM's School of Business and Economics, in collaboration with the School's Student Council and Trimax Club, is not a one-off event.
At a time when many student programmes are carried out without meaningful or lasting outcomes, we – student leaders from Universiti Putra Malaysia – decided to take a different approach.
We strongly believe that student leadership should focus on initiatives that serve the student body rather than merely conducting activities for the sake of it.
It is a year-long, student-led initiative aimed at directly supporting students' daily needs, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Many companies did not respond, and some declined. But a few, recognising our sincerity, stepped forward to support and guide us.
The official distribution under Projek Rak Rahmah began on 8 July 2025, but the groundwork started months earlier – searching for sponsors, writing proposals, and facing countless rejections.
True leadership is reflected in actions that address real issues and bring about actual change – no matter how small the action may seem.
The main objective of Projek Rak Rahmah is to provide students with essential items such as snacks, daily necessities, stationery, and digital access – allowing them to focus on their studies without being burdened by basic needs.
So far, the initiative has delivered several meaningful actions:
8 July 2025 – Motivation Day to uplift students emotionally at the start of final exams.
11 July 2025 – Chill with Milo, sponsored by Nestlé Products Sdn. Bhd.
17 July 2025 – Roti Family Mart, sponsored by Kechara Soup Kitchen.
21 July 2025 – Enjoy Hot Maggi Cup distribution, again supported by Nestlé Products.
24 July 2025 – Joint distribution of Roti Family Mart (Kechara Soup Kitchen) and Milo (Nestlé).
Stationery was sponsored by Dr Nor Siah Jahariddin, a senior lecturer at our faculty -proving that even small, internal contributions can spark real change.
Most notably, after persistent efforts, we secured a sponsorship of 10 laptops from FGV Prodata Systems Sdn. Bhd. (a subsidiary of FGV Holdings Berhad).
These laptops will soon be distributed to selected students from B40 backgrounds who lack access to proper devices for online learning and assignments.
Ensuring no student is left behind
The project's distribution is ongoing, and we are committed to continuing it throughout the academic year to ensure that no student is left behind.
Along the way, we've heard powerful stories from fellow students. One recipient of a care pack quietly said, 'I didn't have enough money for food this week. This helped more than you know.'
That was the moment we truly realised the impact of what we were doing.
We are reaching out to BERNAMA, not to seek attention, but with the hope that this story will inspire other student councils and youth leaders across Malaysia.
Projek Rak Rahmah is a replicable model – any university can do it. You don't need a big budget. What you need is sincerity, consistency, and the drive to make a difference.
We call upon all student leaders to look beyond activities that merely entertain and instead invest in initiatives that directly improve student welfare.
Small actions, when done with sincerity, can lead to meaningful impact.
We hope our story will be shared widely to encourage more youths to rise – not just as organisers, but as change makers who genuinely serve their communities.

New roads, flood solutions for Sibu under 13MP

Chieng says 13MP is a vital opportunity to transform Sibu's development landscape. THE implementation of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is expected to serve as the primary driver for infrastructure development and execution of large-scale flood mitigation projects in Sibu, Sarawak. Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said the 13MP, spanning from 2026 to 2030, will allocate funding for a range of strategic projects aimed at enhancing connectivity between key areas and addressing the recurring flood issues in Sibu. 'Among the main initiatives identified are the construction of a new road linking the Hann's Residence roundabout in Jalan Wong King Huo to Jalan Lapangan Terbang, as well as the upgrading of Jalan Kong Yit Khim and Jalan Salim,' he told reporters after distributing packs of Milo to constituents at his service centre. Chieng said a study by the Public Works Department (JKR) revealed that cost of relocating utilities along the original route would exceed that of constructing a new road. 'As such, an alternative route from Jalan Kong Yit Khim to Sibu Jaya via the Bukit Penyau residential area will be built. 'The proposal to instal traffic lights at the Jalan Bukit Penyau junction is also under consideration, though implementation is expected to begin only after the first phase of the 13MP.' He also said the second phase of the Sentosa Flood Mitigation Plan has been listed under the portfolio of state Public Health, Housing and Local Government Ministry led by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian. 'This project has received encouraging support from the ministry and is expected to be among the earliest initiatives to be carried out under Rolling Plan 1 of the 13MP,' said Chieng. Among other projects in the pipeline, he said, were a new link road connecting Teku to Ulu Sungai Merah, Permai and Sibu Airport, as proposed by Pelawan assemblyman Datuk Michael Tiang. Chieng said a flood mitigation project covering Kampung Saujana, Jalan Jeruwit and Jalan Ek Dee has also been included under Rolling Plan 2 of the 13MP. 'The 13MP is not simply a five-year development blueprint, it is a vital opportunity to transform Sibu's development landscape in terms of road infrastructure, and to enhance the safety and well-being of the community,' he added.

Nestle's outlook brightens with wage growth, govt support measures

PETALING JAYA: Things are starting to look up for Nestle (M) Bhd , the purveyor of Milo chocolate malt drinks and Maggi noodles, as lower commodity prices, a combination of wage growth and government support measures and the decline of boycotts drove earnings in the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25). While analysts remain cautious of the company's outlook, CIMB Research, which has maintained a 'hold' call on the stock with a target price (TP) of RM86.20, expects gradual demand recovery as consumer sentiment normalises amid fading boycott impact as well as likely improvements in exports leveraging on its place as Nestle SA's global halal hub. It believes the share valuation of 35.9 times financial year ending Dec 31, 2025 (FY25) price-to-earnings (PE) has priced in the weak near-term outlook, driven by lower sales volume assumptions amid prevailing soft consumer sentiment and global uncertainties, noting the inelastic demand for its largely consumer staple product offerings, strong brand equity, and diversified product portfolio across key food categories. Affin Hwang Research noted that the 2Q25 financial performance signals that the worst could probably be over, with the boycott pressures easing meaningfully, and has upgraded the stock to a 'buy' call and a TP of RM95 from RM85, implying 42 times PE. A stronger ringgit together with easing commodity prices may help lift the company's margins in the coming quarters. It pointed out that the RM100 credit given through the MyKad to all Malaysians aged 18 and above would also support higher sales in the second half of the year, as many Nestle products comes under the MySara programme. RHB Research said revenue growth, which returned in 2Q25, could be sustainable premised on the company's effective marketing engagements to stimulate consumer spending and the normalising sentiment on its brands. It has upgraded the stock to a 'buy' call from 'neutral' and raised the TP to RM95 from RM77 as the research house thinks that the comeback 'is timely in view of the pick-up in investor appetite for defensive stocks amidst uncertain market conditions.' 'We also expect a margin recovery ahead, on easing commodity prices. 'Post results, we raise FY25 to FY27 earnings by 8%, 7%, 3% after imputing higher sales growth and gross profit margin assumptions,' it said. UOB Kay Hian Research, which has maintained a 'hold' recommendation but with a higher TP of RM82 from RM76, said earnings for FY25 and FY26 has been lifted by 5.6% and 5.2% respectively to factor in higher sales and margin assumptions. 'Nestle had undertaken a price exercise adjustment in July 24 for certain products by 5% to 6% that appears to have largely protected its margins against higher input cost. 'Coupled with its hedging, margins should sustain over the near term,' it added.
