Barcelona's Marcus Rashford wage contribution revealed as Man Utd star nears transfer
Marcus Rashford's patience has paid off and he will be leaving Manchester United for Barcelona, with a loan deal close to being agreed between the two clubs. Rashford has only had eyes for Barca since his loan spell at Aston Villa concluded early due to injury and, barring any hiccups, he will get his way.
The 27-year-old rejected a mega-money move to Saudi Arabia and has been waiting for Barca and United to come to terms over a move. Barcelona were initially slightly reluctant, as they first chased Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, and then flirted with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.
But Hansi Flick's side are now keen to sign the United forward, viewing him as an option on the left of their 4-3-3 formation and as a back-up to veteran centre-forward Robert Lewandowski.
Barca's financial struggles in recent years have been well documented and the Catalan giants have been unwilling to sign Rashford permanently straight away. United put a price tag of £40million on Rashford, before placing him Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad' alongside Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho.
United want to sell their unwanted players as quickly as possible in order to help fund a major squad overhaul, which has already seen Matheus Cunha arrive for £62.5m, with Bryan Mbeumo set to follow for £70m.
However, they have agreed to loan Rashford out again on the proviso that Barca pay the entirety of Rashford's wages and they retain an option to buy. That is a significant financial commitment he is paid £325,000-a-week on a contract until June 2028.
Getting that off their wage bill will come as a relief for United, who are also close to agreeing Sancho's move to Juventus in the coming days. United are about to head off on their pre-season tour of the United States and the click is ticking down towards the start of the 2025/26 season.
While Rashford's departure has been in the pipeline for some time, with the striker having fallen out with Amorim over the winter before being loaned to Villa in January, it is still a major deal for both parties.
Rashford came through the United academy and has 138 goals and 77 assists in 426 appearances for his home-town club. He has helped them win the FA Cup and the EFL Cup twice and the Europa League and his exit will mark a significant moment.
Speaking back in December, he said: "If I know that a situation is already bad I'm not going to make it worse. I've seen how other players have left in the past and I don't want to be that person.
"When I leave I'll make a statement and it will be from me. When I leave it's going to be 'no hard feelings'. You're not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That's me as a person. For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps."

While many United fans wanted to see more business - and certainly earlier signings - over the summer, it is clear that the Old Trafford hierarchy are backing Ruben Amorim. The swift signing of £62.5m Brazilian Matheus Cunha from Wolves was, eventually, followed by the weekend capture of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, for a tidy £65m up front plus a further £6m in potential add-ons. But United also made a move - admittedly a failed one - for Liam Delap, who decided to join Chelsea when Ipswich were relegated. Not necessarily players currently in the Premier League - but definitely those who know what English football is all about. Cunha's two seasons at Molineux have brought him 31 goals, with 27 of them in the Prem. Yes, there were also two suspensions, one for a tear-up with an Ipswich steward, the other for losing it completely in a scuffle with Bournemouth's now-Liverpool defender Milos Kerkez, but at least the Brazilian is battle-ready. Delap may have had just one campaign in the top flight but he has both family pedigree through his dad Rory but also that schooling at the Etihad. Gyokeres played at Brighton and Coventry before moving to Portugal, while United have also been linked with Aston Villa's World Cup-winning keeper Emi Martinez. By contrast, other than the £55m paid out to land injury-plagued Mason Mount - and Amorim will have his fingers crossed the midfielder can have a full season of availability - in 2023, the past few years have all been about trawling the global market rather than scouring and scouting closer to home. Last summer, even though Erik ten Hag had only kept his job by the skin of his teeth and that FA Cup triumph over City, United splashed out nearly £170m on Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Manual Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee, none of whom had kicked a ball in England. If going the 'proven Prem' route does not bring success either - although, after last term, keeping Amorim for the entire campaign, maybe winning the Carabao Cup and securing European football might be a new definition of success - then it will be evidence for the prosecution. Amorim promised things would be better - and such vows can come back to bite. The trouble is that Amorim has inherited a squad that is simply not designed for the tactics and formation he is wedded to. Even the new acquisitions - and surely there must be more by the time the transfer window shuts on September 1 - do not look like being the solution at all the problems last term threw up. Barry Ferguson breaks silence after leaving Rangers and plays down claims by own staff that players couldn't hack it
FORMER Rangers boss Barry Ferguson has dismissed suggestions by his own staff that the players couldn't cope with the pressure at Ibrox. In his first interview since leaving Rangers, Ferguson admitted there were a "few bumps along the road but he loved every minute of it". He also disputed claims from his assistant Dodds who, after exiting the club, told the BBC that the majority of players at Rangers couldn't cope with the pressure. Dodds said: "When you go to a club, you tend to find that 30% of signings are not right and 70% are, and that 70% pulls the 30 along. But at Rangers it was probably the opposite. "I just think the squad need a little bit of help and I'm sure Russell knows, that's why he's trying to make these signings which will hopefully kick on. "I can only say my piece, when I went in there, the guys were brilliant to work with, they gave me everything and that's all I asked. Bryan Mbeumo completes move to Manchester United from Brentford
Manchester United have completed the long-awaited signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo for a fee rising to £71million. Nearly seven weeks after seeing their first offer rebuffed, the Red Devils finally have their man and the 25-year-old has signed a deal until 2030 with the option of a further year. Mbeumo leaves Brentford for an initial £65m fee that the PA news agency understands could rise by a further £6m should certain add-on clauses related to team and player be achieved. Sources have indicated that United were irked by the way negotiations were handled at times as the valuation fluctuated, with a price of £70m plus £7m mentioned at one point. Tottenham – now managed by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank – showed interest in a summer move for Mbeumo, with sources indicating Newcastle, Arsenal and Chelsea also did to varying levels.
