Barcelona's Marcus Rashford wage contribution revealed as Man Utd star nears transfer

Daily Mirrora day ago
Marcus Rashford is heading to Barcelona on a season-long loan with the option to buy and, while Manchester United were seeking a straight transfer, the wage contribution is key to the deal
Marcus Rashford's patience has paid off and he will be leaving Manchester United for Barcelona, with a loan deal close to being agreed between the two clubs. Rashford has only had eyes for Barca since his loan spell at Aston Villa concluded early due to injury and, barring any hiccups, he will get his way.

The 27-year-old rejected a mega-money move to Saudi Arabia and has been waiting for Barca and United to come to terms over a move. Barcelona were initially slightly reluctant, as they first chased Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, and then flirted with Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.

But Hansi Flick's side are now keen to sign the United forward, viewing him as an option on the left of their 4-3-3 formation and as a back-up to veteran centre-forward Robert Lewandowski.

Barca's financial struggles in recent years have been well documented and the Catalan giants have been unwilling to sign Rashford permanently straight away. United put a price tag of £40million on Rashford, before placing him Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad' alongside Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho.
United want to sell their unwanted players as quickly as possible in order to help fund a major squad overhaul, which has already seen Matheus Cunha arrive for £62.5m, with Bryan Mbeumo set to follow for £70m.
However, they have agreed to loan Rashford out again on the proviso that Barca pay the entirety of Rashford's wages and they retain an option to buy. That is a significant financial commitment he is paid £325,000-a-week on a contract until June 2028.

Getting that off their wage bill will come as a relief for United, who are also close to agreeing Sancho's move to Juventus in the coming days. United are about to head off on their pre-season tour of the United States and the click is ticking down towards the start of the 2025/26 season.
While Rashford's departure has been in the pipeline for some time, with the striker having fallen out with Amorim over the winter before being loaned to Villa in January, it is still a major deal for both parties.

Rashford came through the United academy and has 138 goals and 77 assists in 426 appearances for his home-town club. He has helped them win the FA Cup and the EFL Cup twice and the Europa League and his exit will mark a significant moment.
Speaking back in December, he said: "If I know that a situation is already bad I'm not going to make it worse. I've seen how other players have left in the past and I don't want to be that person.
"When I leave I'll make a statement and it will be from me. When I leave it's going to be 'no hard feelings'. You're not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That's me as a person. For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps."

Man Utd's Bryan Mbeumo transfer shows major strategy change – but it could backfire and expose cracks in the club

Now Manchester United have made a major transfer strategy change. While many United fans wanted to see more business - and certainly earlier signings - over the summer, it is clear that the Old Trafford hierarchy are backing Ruben Amorim. The swift signing of £62.5m Brazilian Matheus Cunha from Wolves was, eventually, followed by the weekend capture of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, for a tidy £65m up front plus a further £6m in potential add-ons. But United also made a move - admittedly a failed one - for Liam Delap, who decided to join Chelsea when Ipswich were relegated. READ MORE MAN UTD NEWS END OF THE WORLD Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool STRIPPED of status as world champions And while their other key attacking target, Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres, seems intent on joining Arsenal, he also fits the new blueprint. Not necessarily players currently in the Premier League - but definitely those who know what English football is all about. Cunha's two seasons at Molineux have brought him 31 goals, with 27 of them in the Prem. Yes, there were also two suspensions, one for a tear-up with an Ipswich steward, the other for losing it completely in a scuffle with Bournemouth's now-Liverpool defender Milos Kerkez, but at least the Brazilian is battle-ready. The Cameroonian has demonstrated, already, that he knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the toughest league in world football. Forest in Sensational Sancho Swoop 10 Mbumo will wear No19 for Utd - the same as he wore for Brentford Credit: Getty 10 Even the players United have looked to land and missed out on fitted that bill. Delap may have had just one campaign in the top flight but he has both family pedigree through his dad Rory but also that schooling at the Etihad. Gyokeres played at Brighton and Coventry before moving to Portugal, while United have also been linked with Aston Villa's World Cup-winning keeper Emi Martinez. By contrast, other than the £55m paid out to land injury-plagued Mason Mount - and Amorim will have his fingers crossed the midfielder can have a full season of availability - in 2023, the past few years have all been about trawling the global market rather than scouring and scouting closer to home. Last summer, even though Erik ten Hag had only kept his job by the skin of his teeth and that FA Cup triumph over City, United splashed out nearly £170m on Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Manual Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee, none of whom had kicked a ball in England. Before that, there was £120m spent on Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, with Antony, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrrell Malacia costing another arm and a leg in 2022. Indeed, other than Mount, you have to go back to 2019, when United signed Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, to find examples of the club buying first team starters from Prem rivals. Christian Eriksen was also signed from loan-club Brentford in 2021 - but as a free agent. 10 10 Other than Mason Mount, you have to go back to 2019 to find examples of the club acquiring first team starters from Prem rivals Credit: Getty It is a significant move by United yet one that could expose, to even more certainty, the fault-lines within the club. If going the 'proven Prem' route does not bring success either - although, after last term, keeping Amorim for the entire campaign, maybe winning the Carabao Cup and securing European football might be a new definition of success - then it will be evidence for the prosecution. Amorim promised things would be better - and such vows can come back to bite. The trouble is that Amorim has inherited a squad that is simply not designed for the tactics and formation he is wedded to. Even the new acquisitions - and surely there must be more by the time the transfer window shuts on September 1 - do not look like being the solution at all the problems last term threw up. MAN UTD PLAYER RATINGS: Hojlund completely anonymous and Heaton worryingly man of the match MANCHESTER UNITED kicked off their pre-season adventure with a 0-0 draw against rivals Leeds. Ruben Amorim handed a start to new signing Matheus Cunha as the Red Devils put out a strong starting XI. They ended up changing the entire side for the second half. And more subs followed for United later on in the game. But who had a match to remember? And did anyone have a performance to forget? Find out how Amorim's troops fared here. 10 Rasmus Hojlund was signed from Atlanta in 2023 and is seemingly not the answer to United's goalscoring woes Credit: Getty United did not score enough. Did not create enough. Conceded far too many. Lacked imagination and poise. As for confidence and self-belief - they are through the floor. And while the Portuguese can put in the hours with his squad on the training ground, he cannot do anything about the myriad of other issues at the club. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos knew that their cost-cutting programme would not be popular internally - although they insist it was a step that needed to be taken. Yet the Glazer debt remains the financial elephant in the room, while Ratcliffe's ambitious plans for an 100,000-capacity 'New Trafford' are still, at this stage, an expression of hope rather than a reality. United fans are looking for reasons for optimism and hope. But you do feel that negative signs will only deepen the clouds of doubt and concern. 10 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW And unless this is a season of progress, it will surely only confirm that truly seismic change, both on and off the pitch, is the only way forward. The Red Devils will jet off to the United States this week ahead of three matches as part of the Premier League's Summer Series. United's first face West Ham on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where next year's World Cup final will he held. Amorim's side will then take on Bournemouth at 2:30am BST next Thursday in Chicago, and Everton at 10pm BST on August 3 in Atlanta.

Barry Ferguson breaks silence after leaving Rangers and plays down claims by own staff that players couldn't hack it

FORMER Rangers boss Barry Ferguson has dismissed suggestions by his own staff that the players couldn't cope with the pressure at Ibrox. Ferguson took over on an interim basis after Philippe Clement was sacked in February last season, and was tasked with rejuvenating a beleaguered Rangers team trailing Celtic by 13 points. 3 Former Rangers boss Barry Ferguson Credit: Alamy 3 Neil McCann and Billy Dodds, Rangers Credit: Willie Vass 3 Ferguson in training Credit: Kenny Ramsay Ferguson brought in Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor as part of his backroom staff but, despite reaching the Europa League quarter-finals, they finished 17 points behind champions Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. Since then a new era has been ushered in at Ibrox and the club is under American ownership with Russell Martin appointed as the new boss. In his first interview since leaving Rangers, Ferguson admitted there were a "few bumps along the road but he loved every minute of it". He also disputed claims from his assistant Dodds who, after exiting the club, told the BBC that the majority of players at Rangers couldn't cope with the pressure. Dodds said: "When you go to a club, you tend to find that 30% of signings are not right and 70% are, and that 70% pulls the 30 along. But at Rangers it was probably the opposite. "Too many players you could see going into their shell. "You could see there was no response either in their eyes or in their brain - they couldn't handle going behind." Ferguson now back as a pundit on Go Radio said on Monday: "Everybody has got their opinions. "I just think the squad need a little bit of help and I'm sure Russell knows, that's why he's trying to make these signings which will hopefully kick on. "I can only say my piece, when I went in there, the guys were brilliant to work with, they gave me everything and that's all I asked. Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane "There are always going to be players that leave that's always the case at Rangers and Celtic - money talks. "There's a lot of talk about [Hamza] Igamane even [Cyriel] Dessers so we will just need to wait and see over the next few weeks. "There are definitely a lot of good players there, there is no doubt about it. "And, added in with the quality that the new manager has brought in, you've got to be optimistic with the season ahead." Ferguson had used the time off to "recharge the batteries" and spend time with the family. He also revealed he's had offers from Scotland, England and abroad to go back into management but turned them down. Asked what he thought of Martin at Rangers, he said: "I think Russell Martin is a very good appointment if you watch they way his teams play. "I think the Rangers fans will enjoy his approach to it. "I spoke to him a few weeks ago and I was very impressed by him and I'll get right behind him and I hope he's a very successful Rangers manager. "I think it's important he's allowed time but I think he's a manager that has got huge potential." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Bryan Mbeumo completes move to Manchester United from Brentford

Manchester United have completed the long-awaited signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo for a fee rising to £71million. Nearly seven weeks after seeing their first offer rebuffed, the Red Devils finally have their man and the 25-year-old has signed a deal until 2030 with the option of a further year. Mbeumo leaves Brentford for an initial £65m fee that the PA news agency understands could rise by a further £6m should certain add-on clauses related to team and player be achieved. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Manchester United (@manchesterunited) 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,' the Cameroon international said. 'My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players. 'Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.' Mbeumo is set to join United on their three-game pre-season tour of the United States, where Ruben Amorim's side head to following training on Tuesday. Director football Jason Wilcox said: 'Bryan's goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional, his remarkable consistency has put him amongst the most productive players in England for the last three seasons. 'Bryan's belief in our project and determination to join the club confirmed that he was the perfect fit for Manchester United and the culture that we are developing. 'We are delighted to have secured another one of our primary targets ahead of the pre-season tour. The experience in the US will be the perfect opportunity for Bryan to work with Ruben and his new team-mates as we prepare for an exciting season ahead.' Mbeumo has been a key summer target for the Red Devils, who made a first approach of £45m plus £10m in potential add-ons in early June. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Manchester United (@manchesterunited) United followed that up with an improved proposal exceeding £60m a few weeks later but talks stalled as Brentford held out for a greater fee. The west London club's director of football Phil Giles said at the end of June he 'wouldn't be massively surprised' if Mbeumo stayed but the impasse was finally overcome at the end of last week. Sources have indicated that United were irked by the way negotiations were handled at times as the valuation fluctuated, with a price of £70m plus £7m mentioned at one point. Tottenham – now managed by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank – showed interest in a summer move for Mbeumo, with sources indicating Newcastle, Arsenal and Chelsea also did to varying levels. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brentford Football Club (@brentfordfc) Giles paid tribute to Mbeumo on the Bees' website on Monday evening, saying: 'Bryan came to us as a teenager, and it has been an absolute pleasure for all of us here to watch him develop as a player and a person. 'Our fans have loved him, and he has been a part of some of our greatest days. 'There is always a right time for a player to move on and, for Bryan, that time is now. He has the opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world, and we are very happy for him.' Mbeumo follows fellow forward Matheus Cunha – United's other top summer target – to Old Trafford. The Brazil international joined from Wolves last month for £62.5m, while Diego Leon linked up after striking a deal with Cerro Porteno in January. In terms of outgoings, Marcus Rashford is set to leave his boyhood club for Barcelona and an announcement could come on Tuesday. The 27-year-old, who ended last season at Aston Villa, is in Spain to complete a loan move to Barcelona with an option to buy. PA understands a recall clause has not been included.
