Science fair chariot launched in Giridih
2
Bokaro: State higher and technical education minister flagged off a mobile science exhibition chariot from the Giridih district collectorate premises on Thursday. The chariot will visit selected schools in the district till June 30 and offer a three-day interactive science programme at each location.
"On the first day, a science exhibition will be held at the school, with a master trainer onboard the chariot explaining key scientific concepts.
The second day will feature a science demonstration lecture, while the final day will include a film screening and a telescope viewing session, all conducted in accordance with school guidelines," Giridih deputy commissioner Ramniwas Yadav said.
Kumar said the initiative is a joint effort by the National Council of Science Museums and the Jharkhand Science, Technology and Innovation Council.
Aimed at students in rural areas who lack access to science centres, this project seeks to foster curiosity, innovation, and scientific thinking among children through hands-on learning and engaging demonstrations. "The objective of this travelling science exhibition chariot is to connect children of rural areas with science and technology," Kumar said.

Shubhanshu Shukla likely to return to India this weekend; may meet PM Narendra Modi, will attend National Space Day celebrations
NEW DELHI: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla , the second Indian to travel to space and the first to visit the International Space Station (ISS), is expected to arrive in India this weekend, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said. Shukla is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his short stay in Delhi before heading to his hometown, Lucknow, to meet his family. He will return to Delhi for the National Space Day celebrations on August 23, the minister added. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission, which lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the ISS on June 26. Alongside astronauts Peggy Whitson (US), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary), he conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 18-day mission. The Dragon spacecraft carrying the crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the San Diego coast on July 15, marking the successful completion of the mission. The Axiom-4 mission is seen as a significant milestone for India's human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, which is targeting a launch by 2027. Prime Minister Modi praised Shukla's achievement, saying he has inspired a billion dreams and taken a major step in advancing India's space ambitions. KAPV dean gets TN's Best Doctor award
Trichy: Chief minister M K Stalin on Friday handed over the Best Doctor Award to KAPV & MGMGH dean S Kumaravel for his services towards the welfare of disabled people. Kumaravel was recognised for his 29 years of service as a doctor and for researches focusing on developing new medical devices for the disabled. The award citation highlighted Kumaravel's contribution to advancements in medical technology, including artificial limbs, robotic hands, and artificial skin. Currently, Kumaravel is involved in a research project in collaboration with the department of instrumentation and control engineering at NIT Trichy. The project aims to develop a portable, lightweight, and affordable prosthetic device for people with paralysed legs, offering greater flexibility than existing devices. "It's not that the current devices are inflexible. There are even athletes using them—but some with lesser muscle mass tend to experience fatigue more often," Kumaravel told TOI. "The device we are working on will have sensors and employ IoT technology, making movement easier." Explaining the working mechanism, he said, "EMG signals are sensed from the muscle, amplified, and then used to control artificial limbs, thereby reducing the user's energy expenditure." IIT-Hyderabad transforms sewage sludge, eggshell waste into eco-friendly packaging film
1 2 3 Hyderabad: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) have developed a biodegradable nanocomposite film using sewage sludge and waste chicken eggshells, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based packaging materials for non-food applications. The study, published in ScienceDirect's Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, was led by Debraj Bhattacharyya of IIT-H's department of civil engineering in collaboration with chemistry researchers. "We wanted to explore how urban and food industry waste could be transformed into value-added products," Bhattacharyya said. "Our work shows that even sewage sludge and eggshells, usually considered waste, can become key components of sustainable materials. " The team extracted extracellular polymeric substances from centrifuged sewage sludge collected at the institute's sewage treatment plant and combined them with chitosan derived from shrimp shells. Calcium oxide nanoparticles were prepared from eggshell waste collected at the campus mess, and using a simple solution-casting method, the researchers fabricated films with varying concentrations of the sludge-derived polymer. Water barrier performance improved by 79.9%, while water absorption resistance rose by 71.6%. The films also demonstrated improved thermal stability, opacity and UV-blocking ability. Since the raw materials originate from sludge and eggshells, the researchers noted that the films are not intended for food packaging due to sensitivities attached to their source. "They are better suited for wrapping flowers, protecting non-edible commercial goods or coating UV-sensitive products," Bhattacharyya explained. When discarded, the films degrade in soil and release calcium oxide, which can serve as a micronutrient for soil organisms. Microscopic and structural analysis confirmed the uniform incorporation of calcium oxide into the polymer matrix, ensuring strong bonding between the components of the film. The researchers believe the finding could help convert urban and food industry waste into sustainable, biodegradable materials that align with circular economy principles. However, they acknowledged the method needs improvement in terms of extraction efficiency, scalability and long-term stability before it can be adopted for large-scale use.
