Fats and carbohydrates, eat your hearts out—protein is the macronutrient of the moment. Rich people love the stuff. They treat it like ambrosia. Are they onto something?
Having protein on your plate is important. It is made up of amino acids, of which the body needs 20 types in order to grow, produce hormones and stay healthy. Nine of these amino acids must come from food. The World Health Organisation recommends 0.83 grams of protein a day per kilogram of body weight (g/kg) for healthy adults to maintain muscle and tissue health.
Elderly folk may be better off eating more, since muscles wither with age and older bodies are less efficient at absorbing protein. A review published in Nutrients in 2021 suggested that a ratio closer to 1.2g/kg, together with resistance training, could help limit muscle shrinkage in older people. Children and teenagers, who are still growing, may also want more than the minimum, depending on how active they are. A paper from 2020 suggested that pregnant and breastfeeding women need double the recommended amount to maintain muscle mass and feed their child.
More protein can also help you lose weight. Protein takes more energy to digest than carbohydrates and fats and makes you feel fuller for longer. To build muscle mass, the International Society of Sports Nutrition has recommended a daily protein intake of between 1.4g/kg and 2g/kg, combined with resistance training. A meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine in 2022, though, found that eating more than 1.6g/kg does not lead to further muscle growth.
Where should the protein come from? Powders (dried extracts of milk, pea or soya) are popular and convenient—chugging protein as a drink is easier than gnawing on steak. A randomised controlled trial in 2013 found that whey protein, made from milk, was especially good at building lean body mass for exercising adults. But the supplement won't offer bulk on its own: a review published in 2014 in Sports Medicine found that the best results came in those who also lifted heavy in the gym.
Yet advocates of a traditional balanced diet argue that because alternative sources of protein such as powders and bars often contain too many sugars, flavourings, emulsifiers and other additives, they are less healthy than food-based protein. Eating whole foods may also be a better route to building muscles after a workout, according to a review published in Nutrients in 2018, because of the added benefits of naturally occurring micronutrients such as calcium, vitamin D and iron.
Followers of a Western diet, typically rich in meat, dairy and pre-packaged foods, tend to exceed the minimum protein requirements without trying. This includes vegetarians and vegans, according to a review published in Nutrients in 2019. Most Americans get more than the recommended amount of protein because of their fondness for meat.
The risks of overdoing it on protein are debated. Some nutritionists warn of the potential for kidney damage, but a 2018 meta-analysis concluded that this is only a concern for people with existing kidney trouble. The greater risk may come from protein-rich diets which rely heavily on red meat and ultra-processed foods that can also contain the saturated fats associated with ill health.
In places where food is plentiful, measuring your protein by the gram may not be worth it. Unless you're looking to bulk up, a regular diet is ample.

Speaking after inaugurating Madhav Srishti Arogya Kendra set up by philanthropic organisation 'Guruji Seva Nyas' for affordable treatment of cancer, the RSS chief also stressed on "Dharma", which unites and uplifts society, rather than "technical and formal terms" like corporate social responsibility (CSR). "Good healthcare and education facilities have become a necessity for every person in society today, but unfortunately, quality services in both sectors are beyond the reach and financial capacity of the common man," he said addressing a gathering on the occasion. Earlier, work in the fields of healthcare and education was done with a spirit of service, but now they have got commercialised, the RSS chief lamented. "The need of the hour is to provide accessible, affordable, compassionate and easy facilities to the public in the healthcare and education sectors," Mr. Bhagwat asserted. He also expressed concern over the high cost of cancer treatment in the country. "Good cancer treatment facilities are available in only eight to ten cities in the country, and patients have to spend large sums of money to go there," he said. Capable and resourceful members of society must come forward to provide good healthcare and education facilities to citizens, Mr. Bhagwat opined. "Terms like corporate social responsibility (CSR) are very technical and formal. In the context of service, we have a word called 'dharma'. Dharma means fulfilling social responsibility. Dharma unites and uplifts society," he asserted. He also hailed the Indian medical system for its personalised touch as against the West's "uniformity". "Western countries seek to apply their uniform standards in healthcare to other parts of the world, but Indian medical systems treat patients based on individual needs," the RSS chief pointed out.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat (ANI) NEW DELHI: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday expressed concerns over the increasing commercialisation of healthcare and education while speaking at an event in Indore. He said that both sectors, once considered acts of service, have now become unaffordable and inaccessible for the common man. 'Health and education are extremely important and were earlier considered as 'seva' (service), but now both are beyond the reach of common people. Both have been commercialised. They are neither affordable nor accessible,' Bhagwat said at an event in Indore. Citing personal experience, Bhagwat recalled, 'when I was a child, I had malaria and missed school for three days. My teacher came home, and brought jungle herbs for my treatment. He was concerned that the student who came to him should stay healthy. Society needs accessible and affordable healthcare.' Referring specifically to cancer care, he said, good cancer care is currently available in only 8-10 Indian cities, and stressed the need for healthcare that does not become a source of anxiety for patients. 'We need low-cost, easily accessible medical care. Breastfeeding is one of the most natural and vital ways to nurture a newborn, providing essential nutrients, immune support, and fostering mother-child bonding. Despite its importance, many misconceptions still surround the practice, influencing how long and effectively mothers are able to continue. National guidelines from the World Health Organisation and India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Yet, NFHS-5 (2019–21) data shows that fewer than two-thirds of Indian infants receive it for that duration. 'These statistics highlight a gap between awareness and implementation. Understanding the real factors that influence breastfeeding can help bridge this," says Dr. Batchu Sowdamini, Senior Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Apollo Hospitals, Vizag. Drawing from this data, the gynaecologist debunks some of the most common myths associated with breastfeeding. 1. Nourishing Yourself to Nourish Your Baby Breastfeeding increases nutritional demands. A mother requires 2,500–2,700 kilocalories daily along with adequate protein, calcium, iron, vitamin B12, iodine, and omega-3 fats. 'Nutrient gaps, especially in vegetarian diets, can affect both recovery and lactation," explains Dr. Sowdamini. She recommends whole dals, leafy greens, fermented foods, curd, seeds, nuts, and, where culturally acceptable, eggs or fish. Traditional galactagogues like fenugreek, ajwain, fennel, and cumin have clinical backing for boosting milk supply. Hydration is equally critical, with 3.1–3.8 litres of fluids daily helping sustain milk volume. 2. Prioritising Rest Sleep disruption is common postpartum, yet essential for hormone regulation. 'Fatigue can lower oxytocin, affecting milk let-down," says Dr. Sowdamini. Short naps, safe co-sleeping, and help from family members can reduce exhaustion. In urban areas, night-shift doulas or maternity nurses are emerging as additional support. 3. Managing Stress and Emotional Health Stress can reduce prolactin and oxytocin, hindering milk production. 'In India, social pressure and unsolicited advice often add to emotional strain," notes Dr. Sowdamini. Light yoga, breathing practices, and peer support groups can improve emotional resilience and also help with milk output, respectively. 4. Gentle Movement for Recovery After medical clearance, light physical activity, such as stretching, short walks, or gentle yoga, helps improve posture, circulation, and core strength. 'Avoid high-intensity exercise early on, as it can temporarily affect breastmilk taste," advises Dr. Sowdamini. 5. Building a Supportive Ecosystem Breastfeeding success depends heavily on support from family, community, and workplaces. Spousal involvement, flexible work policies, and lactation-friendly spaces can make all the difference.
