Netflix 'best ever film' leaves fans in floods of tears

Netflix viewers have been left sobbing after discovering a hidden treasure on the streaming platform - a film about a convict who finds purpose in training horses.
The Mustang, released in 2019, garnered high praise and tells the tale of Roman Coleman, a violent criminal serving time in a Nevada prison, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. The movie opens with a helicopter herding hundreds of wild mustangs that are to be 'broken' and sold.
Roman has difficulty interacting with people, and in an attempt to find him a productive task before he can be reintegrated into society - after serving 12 years for a brutal attack on his partner that resulted in brain damage - the prison assigns him to train the horses.
Each prisoner is allocated a specific horse to prepare for auction within 12 weeks. As Roman forms a close bond with his horse, Marquis, he begins to develop friendships through his work with the animal.
The film culminates in a heart-wrenching conclusion about one man's desperate quest for redemption following a horrific act of violence, reports the Irish Star.
Directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre in their debut film, who dedicated five years to meticulous research into real-life training programmes involving prisoners and horses, The Mustang received widespread acclaim upon its release.
The Guardian praised the film with high regard, saying: "Brilliantly, Schoenaerts almost underplays Roman's anger, lumbering slowly like a wounded animal, the downward slope of his eyes conveying a howl of rage. It's an electrifying performance."
With a near-perfect score of 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has garnered acclaim from both audiences and critics alike.
One admirer said: "The Mustang is a unique character-driven film that is headlined by a jaw-dropping performance by Matthias Schoenaerts."
Another added: "It's an extraordinarily gripping film as it delves into social issues and humanity, cutting into your emotional foundation to see the world in a different light."
A third reviewer said: "French filmmaker Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who also co-wrote, impresses with a feature directorial debut that displays an understanding of film as both craft and poetry. She also displays a reverence and hope for flawed humanity.."
The film's powerful portrayals have left many viewers deeply touched. One fan said: "One of the best films I've ever watched. Matthias Schoenaerts and Bruce Durn are spectacularly authentic. The viewer is sucked into both the situation and the predicaments of the players. Just wonderful."
Another shared their experience: "This film is a visually beautiful and riveting story pivoting around the cathartic connection between troubled man and wild horse, and the ripple effect from that. I was completely emotionally invested."
One viewer was moved to say: "Incredibly powerful story of forgiveness, growth, redemption, and finding joy and purpose after tragedy. Amazing performances by all!".
You can catch The Mustang streaming on Netflix now.

Ian Bailey 'probably was 100% innocent' of Sophie Toscan du Plantier's murder, says film director

Film director Jim Sheridan has said that the late Ian Bailey 'probably was 100% innocent' of the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork. The battered body of the French film producer (aged 39) was found near her holiday home in Toormore on the outskirts of Schull in West Cork on December 23, 2006. Mr Sheridan said he believes the case is a "double injustice". 'I feel Sophie's murderer has never been found, her death has never been avenged. A man who probably was 100% innocent has been castigated through life; he lived a horrible life and died a horrible death and has a horrible name," he told Newstalk Breakfast. 'I don't think he killed her and there's not a shred of evidence to say he did.' Mr Sheridan's new drama Re Creation, about the murder, recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Starring Colm Meaney, Aidan Gilles and Vicky Krieps, it imagines what could have unfolded if the unresolved murder had gone before a jury in Ireland. Ian Bailey, who died in January 2024 at the age of 66, was the self-confessed chief suspect in the case. He was on two occasions detained by Gardaí for questioning in relation to the murder. Ian Bailey (pictured), who died in January 2024 at the age of 66, was the self-confessed chief suspect in the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder case. File picture: Dan Linehan Mr Bailey was convicted in absentia after a trial in France in 2015. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. However, officials in France were unable to extradite him to Paris to serve the sentence handed down by the courts. Mr Sheridan said that Mr Bailey's conviction in Paris was a 'farce". He said that he 'of course' knew he risked causing upset to the family of Toscan du Plantier with his new drama. 'You can't say because you're upset that you can ruin another man's life,' he said. "There's no evidence.' Mr Sheridan acknowledged that Mr Bailey's history of violence with his former partner Jules Thomas was 'not good". He said that there was no doubt of the suffering experienced by the family of Ms Toscan du Plantier. However, Mr Sheridan stressed that the family of Mr Bailey have also suffered over the years. I'm sure Ian Bailey's sister was upset that there was nobody at his funeral and that he had to die in that ignominious way. I'm sure she's upset. Alain Spilliaert, a lawyer for Ms Toscan du Plantier's family, said he has not seen the film yet but has expressed concerned about its potential content. 'We feel that it is not relevant to show a fictional movie at this point of time of the criminal investigation. This is such a large, sensitive case in Ireland… and it's not finished.'
