Patidar said that they were very clear with the bowling plans and the pacers used the surface well and Suyash chipped in as well. "We were very clear in our bowling plans. Fast bowlers used the surface pretty well. The way Suyash chipped in with his line and length was incredible," sad Patidar. Patidar said that he was very clear with Suyash when it comes to his bowling. The RCB skipper said that he wants the bowler to try and hit the stumps consistently and didn't want to confuse him. advertisement"As a captain I am pretty much clear about his bowling. His strength is to bowl in line of the stumps. His googly is very hard to pick. I don't want to confuse him. We don't mind him conceding a few runs," said Patidar. The RCB skipper also doffed his hat to Phil Salt, saying that he is a big fan of him. "The way he's batting in most of the matches. The way he's giving the start, it's a dream to watch him from the dug out. I am a huge fan of him," said Patidar. RCB now wait for their opponents in the IPL 2025 final on June 3. Tune InMust Watch

Asia Cup: Shreyas Iyer ignored, Shubman Gill named vice captain; Yashasvi Jaiswal among standbys
BCCI Photo MUMBAI: Shubman Gill has been named India's vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025, set to be played in the UAE next month. The 25-year-old opener, who led India to a 2-2 draw in the fiveTest series in England, returns to the T20I squad assuming a leadership role. Gill, captain of Gujarat Titans in the IPL, replaces left-arm spinner Axar Patel as the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav in the 15-man squad. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Alongside Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, Gill's selection ensures three opening options in the group, with Samson potentially serving as third opener. Gill's most recent T20I was against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2024, where he also served as vice-captain to Yadav. Despite impressive performances by Samson and Abhishek in India's last three T20I series against Bangladesh, South Africa and England, Gill's strong showing in IPL-2025, where he scored 650 runs at a strike rate of 155.87 and led his franchise to the playoffs, bolstered his inclusion. Additionally, Gill's exceptional performance in the Test series in England, scoring four centuries and amassing 754 runs, played a significant role. 'We obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign when there's so much pressure as captain,' explained chief selector Ajit Agarkar. 'There are more options for the top-order now and Shubman has been in great form anyway. When they get to Dubai, they can decide on the playing XI according to the opposition and the conditions,' Agarkar added. Samson's spot in XI uncertain? Gill's inclusion raises questions about Samson's role, especially after his struggles against England pacer Jofra Archer in the T20I series in Jan and Feb, India's last T20 assignment before the Asia Cup . There is speculation that Samson may be moved down the order, potentially making way for Jitesh Sharma as a finisher. 'Sanju was playing because Shubman and Yashasvi were not available at that point, and so was Abhishek. But Abhishek's performances clearly make it hard to leave him out. Plus, his bowling is handy. Like I said, Gill was vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket. That was after the last T20 World Cup, so even at that point, clearly we were thinking along those lines. Now that he's available, at least he has two options. It's their headache to pick the batting lineup now, ours was to pick the 15. But we've got some real depth as far as T20 cricket is concerned, and we are very happy with it,' Agarkar stated. Suryakumar Yadav commented, 'The last time when he played T20Is for India, post the T20 World Cup when we went to Sri Lanka and when I was leading, Gill was the vice-captain. That's where we started a new cycle. 'After that, he got busy with all the Test series, and he didn't get an opportunity to play T20Is because he was busy playing Test cricket and Champions Trophy. Now, he's there in the squad, and we're happy to have him. ' Two of Mumbai's star batters, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle-order enforcer Shreyas Iyer did not make the squad. Jaiswal is among the five reserves, while Iyer was excluded despite scoring 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 in IPL 2025 and leading Punjab Kings to the final. Agarkar justified their omission. 'With regard to Yashasvi, it's just unfortunate again. There's Abhishek Sharma, what he's done over the last year or so — plus he can bowl a little bit — he gives us that option if required. One of these guys was going to miss out. Yashasvi just has to wait for his chance. With regard to Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor ours. At the moment, you can just pick 15. So he will have to wait for his chance,' Agarkar said. Bumrah back, Siraj rested The squad sees the return of World's No. 1 fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, enhancing India's pace unit alongside Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Hardik Pandya. Mohammed Siraj has been rested to stay fresh for the upcoming Tests, and Mohammed Shami appears to have been excluded from the T20I format. Among spinners, Washington Sundar was not selected, while Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel were included. The reserves include Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Washington, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel. The tournament begins on Sept 9, with India opening their campaign against UAE at the Dubai International Stadium on Sept 10. India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Oman, and UAE. The Asia Cup concludes on Sept 28 and will be one of the key auditions for spots for the men's T20 World Cup next Feb in India and Sri Lanka. 'Want Jasprit for all big games' Agarkar emphasised the importance of having Bumrah available for major tournaments. He last played for India in the T20 format in the 2024 T20 World Cup final vs South Africa in Barbados on June 29 and his workload management has been one of the big talking points in Indian cricket. 'I don't think there's any written plan. It has been a nice break after the England series. 'The physios and team management have been in touch, and clearly, we want him available for all the big games. There are World Cups, Champions Trophy, the big Test series like the ones against England and Australia and you want him available for those,' Agarkar explained. 'Based on how he's feeling and how we require him, we hope he's available more often than not,' he added. After a month-long break, India areexpected to arrive in Dubai early to acclimatise. SQUAD: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vicecaptain), Abhishek Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Harshit Rana, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav. Standbys: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Asia Cup 2025: R Ashwin's shocking admission - 'I am happy for Shubman, but...'
Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal (X) Former India spinner R Ashwin admitted that he was a bit shocked not to see the names of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer in Suryakumar Yadav-led 15-member squad for the Asia Cup. The Asia Cup will begin on September 9, with defending champions India set to face hosts United Arab Emirates a day later in Dubai in the eight-nation tournament. India and arch-rivals Pakistan have been clubbed in Group A and will clash on September 14. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'See, I understand that selection is a thankless job," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "Leaving somebody out, telling someone they are dropped, it is not an easy thing. You have to speak to the players, you have to go through the sadness. India Asia Cup squad: Why Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill are biggest talking points "I just hope Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal were given a call, and they were told the reasons behind not being picked. 'Genuinely, I understand Shubman Gill's selection. He is also the vice-captain. He has scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has the credentials to be picked in the T20I setup,' he added. Gill, 25, returned to the 15-man squad as deputy to skipper Suryakumar Yadav, thanks to the stellar role he played with the bat in the recent Test series against England. Poll Do you agree with Ashwin's opinion on the exclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup squad? Yes, it's unfair No, the selections are justified Not sure I don't follow cricket closely The top-order batsman scored 754 runs as India's relatively young squad fought from behind to square the five-match series 2-2. The eight-nation Asia Cup will be the first major event in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India in February and March. Gill, who was named Test skipper after the retirement of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli earlier this year, last played a T20 international in July 2024. 'When you have Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener in the T20 World Cup 2024, to remove someone from the World Cup squad and bring in Shubman Gill... I mean, it's okay, I am happy for Shubman, but I'm very sad for both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. It is just not fair to these two kids,' said Ashwin. Samson Vs Abhishek, Who'll Get Dropped For Gill? Ex-Opener Makes Pick
Last Updated: Aakash Chopra picks who between Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma will be dropped from India's 11 due to Shubman Gill's return as vice-captain. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar might have left the decision on India's new T20I opening combination — who to choose between Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma — on the team management, but ex-cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that it indicates that Samson is set to be dropped soon. Abhishek and Samson were India's designated duo against England in the last T20I series in January-February. Abhishek impressed in that series to rise to the best-ranked ICC batter in the format. While Samson struggled (only 51 runs in five innings), he scored three centuries in the previous two series. Chopra feels that giving Gill, an opener, the vice-captaincy all but decided that he'd be the team's new top-order batter. 'India seems to be moving in the direction of an all-format captain," Chopra said on JioHotstar. 'With Shubman Gill's return, Sanju Samson's fate has more or less been sealed. He will not feature in the playing XI now. You will not drop Tilak Varma or Hardik Pandya, which means Samson sits out and Jitesh Sharma will likely get the nod again. One thing is very clear from this selection, the batting slots have been prioritised over personalities. With Gill coming in as vice-captain, he will definitely play and open the batting. This essentially pushes Sanju Samson out of the XI," he added. 'The captain-coach will take the call on the best balance for the team. Once we get to Dubai, we will have a bit more clarity. With more options available now, Shubman has been in great form for the last few months. So has Sanju, so two good options, along with Abhishek," he said. Gill was the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2025, his best season to date. He's already the ODI vice-captain and at 25 one of the youngest in the squad. Plus, he is coming off a good Test captaincy debut in England, with the drawn 2-2 series working in his favor towards an all-format leadership role. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
