Piraeus Recognised as Greece's Best Performing Bank in The Banker's 2025 Rankings

Globe and Mail5 days ago
Piraeus (ATHEX: TPEIR) (OTCQX:BPIRY) has been recognised as Greece's Best Performing Bank in The Banker's 2025 Top 1000 World Banks rankings, the globally respected benchmark of banking strength published annually by the Financial Times. Piraeus secured the top spot in Greece for overall performance, achieving #1 positions in both operational efficiency and risk adjusted return.
The Banker's Top 1000 World Banks performance rankings evaluate banks using a composite of metrics that go beyond Tier 1 capital. These include efficiency, asset quality, liquidity, and return, offering a broader view of sustainable banking performance. The data is sourced from banks' latest financial filings and assessed independently by The Banker's editorial and research team. Used by central banks, strategists and senior decision-makers in 94 countries, these rankings remain the most comprehensive measure of global banking strength, covering over 130 performance indicators and tracking $150 trillion in assets.
Christos Megalou, Chief Executive Officer of Piraeus, commented, 'This recognition reflects the consistent, disciplined work across our organisation to improve efficiency, manage risk and deliver strong results for our clients and stakeholders. Being ranked first in overall performance is a testament to our team's efforts and to Piraeus' strength, resilience and leadership in our primary market. It demonstrates that our strategy is working and that our commitment to long-term value creation is resonating both within Greece and internationally.'
The Banker notes that 2024 brought mixed results for European lenders, with pre-tax profits falling across the region and asset growth subdued. Greek banks, by contrast, have returned to profitability after a decade of restructuring, with Piraeus standing out for its strength in core performance metrics.
Piraeus' performance in The Banker's rankings follows a period of focused execution across the Bank, from operating discipline to risk-adjusted returns. Over the past year, Piraeus delivered strong profitability, recording a net profit of €1.1 billion in 2024 and a return on tangible book value of 15%. The Bank continued to strengthen its balance sheet, growing its performing loan book by a leading market rate of 12%, to nearly €35 billion. Assets under management continued to grow at more than 20% per year, currently above €12 billion. These results underline the significant progress made in reinforcing the Bank's foundations and highlight its important role in supporting the Greek economy through stable, responsible, and forward-looking banking.

Here's Why Nebius Group Nearly Doubled in the First Half of 2025

Key Points Nebius is one of the big new AI "neoclouds" backed by Nvidia. Like peer CoreWeave, Nebius saw hypergrowth in the first half of 2025. Nebius also took a majority stake in a Jeff Bezos-backed AI company. 10 stocks we like better than Nebius Group › Shares of Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS) nearly doubled in the first half of 2025, rising 99.7% through June 30, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. Nebius is a "new" version of an old company called Yandex, which had been known as the "Russian Google." After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Yandex divested its Russian assets, reheadquartered in Amsterdam, and then went about using its data center expertise to build a European artificial intelligence (AI) "neocloud" in the vein of CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV). The company relisted on the Nasdaq in August 2024. Coming into 2025, Nebius therefore looked like a start-up, with lots of cash, in-progress assets, and little revenue; however, the company soon showed explosive growth that led to widespread optimism it would become a major AI winner. Another Nvidia-backed neocloud showing triple-digit growth Back in December 2024, Nebius raised $700 million in a private placement led by Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). Thus, like CoreWeave, Nebius became one of the neocloud "horses" upon which Nvidia is betting. As the large cloud-computing providers increasingly turn to their own in-house designed AI chips to save money, Nvidia appears to be backing several top-tier "neoclouds," which likely get a preferred allocation of Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs). That early access to the latest Nvidia Blackwell GPUs, along with expertise in running AI GPU infrastructure, gives these companies an advantage. Thus, Nebius and CoreWeave have shown explosive growth as they rent out their infrastructure to hyperscale cloud companies or directly to AI companies such as OpenAI. As an early-stage tech company, Nebius' stock was highly volatile during the first half of the year, falling hard after the DeepSeek R1 model was released and then again following April 2 "Liberation Day." Yet when all was said and done, Nebius' stock nearly doubled by June 30. That came on the back of strong triple-digit revenue growth, lending credence to Nebius' forward guidance at the beginning of the year. May was a big month for Nebius, as it reported first-quarter revenue growth of 385% and 684% growth in annualized recurring revenue (ARR), which leapt to $249 million by the end of Q1. And that growth came with margin expansion, as Nebius' operating costs only grew by 96% in the same period. The massive revenue inflection seemed to vindicate Nebius' initial guidance to reach between $750 million and $1 billion in ARR by the end of 2025. During Q1, Nebius also made an interesting majority investment in Toloka, an expert data provider to AI companies. It was clear in the early stages of AI that sometimes AI gets things wrong or "hallucinates." That's why having good data is crucial, which is where Toloka comes in. Toloka is also backed by Jeff Bezos' venture company Bezos Expeditions, as well as by Mikhail Parakhin, the CTO of Shopify. After surging over 60% in May, Nebius rocketed another 50%-plus in June following a strong endorsement by boutique sell-side firm Arete Research. In an early-June analyst note, Arete's Andrew Beale slapped a $84 price target on Nebius, which is still nearly double today's stock price and was even 50% higher than Nebius' June 30 highs. Arete liked Nebius' execution and the "embedded value" of its AI clusters, given an apparent shortage of Nvidia Blackwell GPUs. Can Nebius keep climbing? At first, Nebius seems very expensive, trading for about 20 times this year's revenue estimates. However, if the company hits the high end of its end-of-year ARR guidance, then the stock is trading at a more reasonable 10 times forward ARR. That's not unreasonable for a company experiencing hypergrowth and expanding margins. However, it's very early in the AI races and in Nebius' revenue trajectory, so it's nearly impossible to tell how "expensive" the stock is from a long-term perspective after its massive first-half run. Trump says 30% tariffs against EU, Mexico to proceed starting Aug. 1

Social Sharing U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced he's levying tariffs of 30 per cent against the European Union and Mexico starting on Aug. 1, after weeks of negotiations with the key trading allies failed to reach a more comprehensive trade deal. The fresh tariffs were announced in separate letters posted on Truth Social on Saturday. Earlier this week, Trump issued new tariff announcements for a number of countries, including Canada, Japan, South Korea and Brazil, as well as a 50 per cent tariff on copper. The EU had hoped to reach a comprehensive trade agreement with the U.S. for the 27-bloc. In his letter to Mexico's leader, Trump acknowledged the country has been helpful in stemming the flow of undocumented migrants and fentanyl into the United States. But he said Mexico has not done enough to stop North America from turning into a "Narco-Trafficking Playground." In his letter to the European Union, Trump said the U.S. trade deficit was a national security threat. "We have had years to discuss our Trading Relationship with The European Union, and we have concluded we must move away from these long-term, large, and persistent, Trade Deficits, engendered by your Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies, and Trade Barriers," Trump wrote in the letter to the EU. "Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from Reciprocal." Cross Country Checkup is asking: What grade are you giving Prime Minister Mark Carney so far? Leave your comment here and we may read it or call you back for our show on Sunday. Trump is in the midst of an announcement blitz of new tariffs with allies and foes alike, a bedrock of his 2024 campaign that he said would set the foundation for reviving a U.S. economy he claims has been ripped off by other nations for decades. With the reciprocal tariffs, Trump is effectively blowing up the rules governing world trade. WATCH | Trump calls CUSMA a 'good deal' Carney meeting in May: Trump calls CUSMA 'a good deal for everybody' 2 months ago Duration 1:22 In an Oval Office meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, U.S. President Donald Trump accused the previous Trudeau government of 'trying to take advantage' of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, saying although the deal is 'good for all countries,' it will be up for renegotiation soon. Carney said the deal is a basis for a broader negotiation and some things about it will have to change. For decades, the United States and most other countries abided by tariff rates set through a series of complex negotiations known as the Uruguay round. Countries could set their own tariffs, but under the "most favoured nation'' approach, they couldn't charge one country more than they charged another. With Saturday's letters, Trump has now issued tariff conditions on 24 countries and the EU. Earlier this week, a Trump administration official told CBC News that the 35 per cent tariff threat on imports from Canada won't apply to goods that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The president posted about the 35 per cent levies on Truth Social. They're expected to apply to goods currently hit with tariffs of 25 per cent, the official said. U.S. tariffs on potash and energy are expected to remain at 10 per cent. However, no final decisions have been made by Trump. The EU's chief trade negotiator said earlier this week that a trade deal to avert higher tariffs on European goods imported to the U.S. could be reached "even in the coming days." Maroš Šefčovič told EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France, on Wednesday that the EU had been spared the increased tariffs contained in the letters Trump sent on Monday and an extension of talks would provide "additional space to reach a satisfactory conclusion." The bloc collectively sells more to the U.S. than any other country. U.S. goods imports from the EU topped $553 billion US in 2022, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Insight into Trump's letters On April 2, Trump proposed a 20 per cent tariff for EU goods and then threatened to raise that to 50 per cent after negotiations didn't move as fast as he would have liked. Šefčovič did not mention any tariff figures. The higher tariffs as well as any EU retaliation had been suspended as the two sides negotiate. However, the base rate of 10 per cent for most trade partners, as well as higher rates of 25 per cent on autos and 50 per cent on steel and aluminum, had gone into effect. Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former congressional budget office director and president of the centre-right American Action Forum, said Trump's letters were evidence that serious trade talks were not taking place over the past three months. He stressed that nations were instead talking amongst themselves about how to minimize their own exposure to the U.S. economy and Trump. "They're spending time talking to each other about what the future is going to look like, and we're left out," Holtz-Eakin said.
