ARMYs (아미) rejoiced on 10th June (Tuesday) as BTS (방탄소년단) leader RM (랩몬스터) and member V (뷔) completed their 18-month military service. Their return marks a significant milestone in BTS's long-anticipated comeback, sparking widespread excitement and heartfelt celebrations across the global fandom.
However, alongside the joy, concerns quickly emerged following reports of the hardships RM faced during his enlistment. Allegations of mistreatment have ignited outrage among fans. Many are now demanding accountability and stronger protections for public figures fulfilling their national duty.
It isn't unusual for Korean men fulfilling their mandatory military service to share negative experiences. Over the years, public perception of conscription has grown increasingly controversial, from the lingering physical and mental toll it takes to the belief that it's a waste of time for young men in critical stages of their careers.
Kim Nam-joon (김남준), also known as RM, began his military service on 11th December 2023. After completing five weeks of basic training at the Korea Army Training Centre in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, he was assigned to the 15th Infantry Division's military band unit. Upon his return, fans gathered in support, celebrating his safe discharge and the successful end of his nearly two-year commitment.
The rapper held a solo live stream to openly discuss his military experience and the challenges he faced with HYBE during that time. He revealed that after releasing his solo album 'RPWP', he began suffering from insomnia. Being surrounded by what felt like 20 other soldiers made it nearly impossible for him to get proper rest. 'I mean, there were a lot of things happening outside the base. I remember thinking to myself, 'Oh, I'm going to die at this rate.' Like, I have to keep going with the daily schedule, but I'm running on no sleep,' he added.
At one point, he went two days without sleep, which led to self-critical thoughts about his own 'weakness' and sensitivity. 'While in the military, I kept asking myself, 'Why are you so weak? Is this all you got? You've been through more challenging times already. So why… Why do you keep losing to things like sleep… Or the military…? You have to do better,' he stated, noting it was a recurring thought he had throughout his service.
ARMYs have voiced their frustration at the toll this experience took on RM's mental health. Many pointed out that if it were anyone else, the government might have intervened sooner, or at the very least, shown greater care, especially considering the pressure placed on high-profile figures like RM. The lasting effects could impact his ability to perform regularly, as he may now need to prioritise rest and recovery.
This isn't the first time an idol's mental health has suffered during military service, which only adds to the growing disappointment over the military's lack of concern for the well-being of its soldiers. Fans, however, remain steadfast in their support, relieved that RM has completed his service and now has the space to focus fully on healing.

It was probably -20 degrees Celsius and one of the seniors said it was the second coldest winter in their 20-year career. I was like, 'Why is this happening to us?'" He remarked, "It's a place where you can't help but swear all the time." Jimin further elaborated on their initial rationale for enlisting together: "I enlisted with Jungkook because I thought it'd be better with him — but how were we supposed to know we'd end up at the front line? Everyone looked at us with pitiful eyes that said, 'Why did you come here?' At the time, we didn't have the strength." His military service appears to have significantly deepened his appreciation for soldiers. Earlier on the day of his discharge, Jimin addressed fans and reporters, stating, "It was my first time in the military, and honestly, it wasn't that easy. If you ever see soldiers passing by, I'd be very grateful if you could offer them kind words." During the livestream, Jimin and Jungkook also shared training camp anecdotes, recalling how they "clung to each other" on their first day. "The two of us kept talking. We were just stuck together and no one else was saying a word, but we were the only ones laughing and the rest of them were serious," they recounted. Jimin added, "When the assistant instructor came, we got really close to him. The platoon commander was great too — he's two years older than me. He treated me as if we were real brothers and he felt like a father to me by the time I was discharged." Jimin then shared a humorous bedtime incident: "When I was sleeping, I put my arms up by my head. Every time I fell asleep, my dreams had this construction noise that woke me up." He continued, "My arm was so numb that I woke up with a start — and then I saw Jungkook's face, sound asleep on my arm." Jungkook laughed and playfully admitted guilt, joking, "I guess I wanted to lean on you." Jungkook also shared a photo strip they took together at a BTS Festa booth, celebrating the completion of their duties. Two days prior, fellow bandmates RM and V were also discharged from the military, holding their own Weverse live stream. Jin and J-Hope were the first to complete their service in 2024 and have since been pursuing solo careers. Suga is the last member scheduled for discharge, with his service concluding on June 21.

Chinese Woman Arrested After Attempting To Break Into BTS' Jungkook's Home
It's only been a day since BTS (방탄소년단) member Jungkook (정국) returned from his military service. However, there has already been a serious invasion of his privacy. Earlier today, news outlets reported that a woman had allegedly attempted to break into the idol's home. According to news reports, Yongsan Police officers have arrested a Chinese woman in her 30s for attempting to trespass on Jungkook's residence in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The incident occurred on the night of 11th June 2025 (Wednesday), at around 11:20pm. Police were called to the scene after neighbours caught the woman pressing the electronic keylock on the door, likely attempting to enter the premises. It's unknown whether Jungkook was at the residence during the incident. However, after her arrest, the woman revealed she came to Korea to see Jungkook following his army discharge. The police are investigating the specific circumstances of the incident. Jungkook's label, HYBE, has commented on the situation but said, 'It's difficult to provide detailed information on the situation as the police are currently investigating the situation.' Meanwhile, ARMYs online have shared their reaction to the news, mostly expressing shock over the situation. Many criticised the woman's action, hoping she'd receive appropriate punishment for attempted trespassing. Others lamented the extreme situation with BTS' stalkers, or sasaengs, urging HYBE to protect their artists. Some also said that the singer has only returned from the military for a day, but already has to deal with stalkers. This case isn't the only issue surrounding BTS' recent military discharge. After RM (알앰), V (뷔), Jimin (지민) and Jungkook completed their military service, roughly 1,500 ARMYs flocked to the HYBE building in Seoul to celebrate the occasion. However, the move sparked a backlash as the large crowd could cause traffic disruptions and possible accidents. In response, Jimin shared a post on the Weverse platform, asking the fans not to gather near the building. (EPA Images pic) CHUNCHEON : The world's most popular boy band is heading for a reunion: K-pop megastars RM and V from BTS were released today after service 18 months of South Korean military service, prompting a fan frenzy. The seven members of BTS, South Korea's most lucrative musical act, have been on a hiatus since 2022 while they separately undertake mandatory military service, required of all South Korean men under the age of 30. Hundreds of fans gathered near two army bases just outside of the capital Seoul where band leader RM – recently named 'Favourite K-pop Artiste' at the American Music Awards – and singer V were discharged. 'To be honest, there were many difficult and painful moments. But during my service, I truly felt how so many people were protecting the country in our place,' RM told reporters. V said military service was 'a time for me to reset and rebuild both my body and mind'. 'Now that I've done that, I truly want to run straight to ARMY as soon as possible,' he said, referring to the band's official fandom name. When asked by reporters what they wanted to do after discharge, both replied, 'perform'. 'What we want most right now is to perform again,' said RM. 'We're working hard on the new album so we can return to the stage as soon as possible.' In total, four BTS members will complete their service this week. GDP impact Prior to their mandatory military service, the boy band generated more than 5.5 trillion won in yearly economic impact, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute. That accounts for roughly 0.2% of South Korea's total GDP, according to official data. HYBE has hinted at a BTS comeback this year, but has also said the members 'need time for reflection and preparation'. 'Normally, the process goes from song production to album release, then a tour,' Lee Jae-sang, CEO of HYBE, told a shareholder meeting in March. 'But since BTS have already become global top-tier artists, we are continuing discussions about their vision and what's next,' Lee added.
