Pahang plans high-tech zone to attract AI and tech investments
State Investment, Industrial development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman, Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib, said the initiative aims to draw investments from technology firms to the east coast region.
'The Pahang High-Tech Zone will be developed in the Kuantan area. Should there be any changes to the location, we will make an official announcement. We also aim to attract talent in the AI sector to be part of the ecosystem and support the growth of startup companies we are nurturing in Pahang,' he added.
He said this to reporters after launching the AI for Productivity Transformation and officiating the closing ceremony of the Speed GCPV (Grid-Connected Photovoltaic) programme at the Pahang Skills Development Centre here today.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Nizar expressed hope that Pahang Skills and the Pahang Foundation would collaborate to attract companies and fresh talent in the field of AI to the state.
'We in Pahang must be well-prepared to face both the opportunities and challenges that AI will bring. The state government will also explore potential incentives to encourage more AI companies to establish operations here, rather than limiting their presence to the Klang Valley or other states.
He added that the state government is also exploring the development of floating solar farms, or floating photovoltaics (FPV), as part of its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
He said the proposed solar farm would be built on a suitable lake or dam site, with the project expected to take two years to complete.
'We need to produce more skilled and knowledgeable technicians in the solar energy sector, both in Pahang and across Malaysia. So far, 288 participants have been trained in this field through the Speed GCPV programme,' he added.

ECRL boost: Pahang eyes mineral hub, new industrial clusters along rail corridor
KUANTAN, Aug 14 — Pahang is exploring the development of a mineral collection hub in Maran to capitalise on the upcoming East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) station in the district, aiming to boost resource-based industries and regional economic growth, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail. The proposed hub will focus on the collection of bauxite, gold, silica and iron ore. Maran's strategic location in a major palm oil-producing region also positions it to support a palm oil processing and packaging industrial cluster, leveraging improved rail connectivity for logistics and exports, he said. Wan Rosdy noted that other districts along the ECRL corridor are also set to benefit from targeted industrial development. The ECRL station in Temerloh, for example, will support the furniture manufacturing sector due to its proximity to existing industrial zones such as the Temerloh Industrial Area, Songsang and Kampung Sempadan. In Paya Besar, the station is expected to drive the growth of high-impact industries supported by key infrastructure, including the Pahang Technology Park, Gambang Halal Park and the Halal Food Complex, which houses small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and related facilities. 'These locations have been earmarked for light, medium and heavy industries, and are already equipped with the necessary infrastructure,' Wan Rosdy said during the Pahang State Legislative Assembly session at Wisma Sri Pahang. He was responding to a question from appointed assemblyman Rizal Jamin, who asked about the types of industries identified for development along the ECRL corridor. In Cherating, the upcoming station is expected to spur investments in coastal tourism, hospitality and ecotourism, further diversifying Pahang's economic landscape. Wan Rosdy added that the state government is confident the ECRL will position Pahang as a key hub for investment, industry and logistics on the east coast. 'Systematic planning at each station, coupled with strong collaboration with the federal government and other stakeholders, will ensure this initiative delivers broad benefits to the people and the state,' he said. Separately, State Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Sim Chon Siang said the ECRL project is projected to create approximately 600 new jobs in Pahang upon completion. These include roles for rail system technicians, engineers and ticketing officers. Malaysia Techlympics draws 1.4 million annual participants since 2022
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Malaysia Techlympics programme has consistently attracted nearly 1.4 million participants each year since its inception in 2022. Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohamad Yusof Apdal revealed participation figures of 1.03 million in 2022, 1.82 million in 2023 and 1.31 million so far in 2024. The hybrid format combining physical and online events since June has expanded accessibility across the country. Mohamad Yusof said this approach supports broader community involvement in advancing Malaysia's science, technology and innovation goals. He spoke during the East Coast Zone Malaysia Techlympics 2025 launch at Terengganu Science and Creativity Centre. The programme aligns with the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Action Plan 2021-2030's emphasis on inclusive STI awareness. Malaysia Techlympics competitions cover emerging technologies like AI, IoT, drones, coding and robotics for participants aged seven to 30. The ongoing East Coast Zone event has drawn over 2,000 participants from 120 schools across Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang. Mohamad Yusof highlighted the programme's rural outreach ensuring STEM education access for underserved communities. More than 1,500 students and 1,000 teachers from East Coast states have participated in training sessions, including virtual and physical Training of Trainers programmes. Johor first state to launch cooking oil subsidy sales via eCOSS app
JOHOR BARU: Johor has become the first state to roll out retail sales of subsidised cooking oil packets through the eCOSS mobile application, covering 29 "point of sale" (POS) locations under Phase Two of the Subsidised Cooking Oil Distribution Programme. State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the eCOSS (Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme) app records each 1kg subsidised cooking oil packet transaction, from manufacturers, packagers, wholesalers, and retailers, down to final consumer purchases. The pilot programme, previously tested under the Madani Rahmah Sales initiative, is now extended to participating supermarkets, with purchases limited to three packets per transaction to prevent leakages and ensure supplies reach eligible Malaysians. "To ensure a smooth implementation, Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry officers will be stationed at all 29 outlets between Aug 11 to 15 to assist with registration, app usage, and conduct 'training of trainers' sessions for shoppers and supermarket staff," Lee said after launching the initiative at the Maslee B5 Supermarket today. The federal government allocates 3.3 million subsidised packets monthly to Johor, with RM5 per packet borne by the government. Supplies will be replenished regularly by 19 packaging and wholesale firms to guarantee availability, particularly for B40 households. Lee said the system would strengthen supply chain monitoring and address past complaints of shortages in certain areas. "If it proceeds smoothly, eCOSS will be expanded to other locations," he said. The eCOSS app is available for download on Google Play and the App Store.
