Aspiring jockey Billy Moffatt's death marks third tragedy in four years at Warren Greatrex's Lambourn stables
A sudden and heartbreaking loss
Billy Moffatt
, a stable groom in his early 20s, was found dead in his accommodation at the
Warren Greatrex Stables
in Uplands, Lambourn, Berkshire on Saturday, May 10. Moffatt, originally from the North East, had worked at the yard for nearly a year, helping train horses under the prominent trainer Warren Greatrex.
The alarm was raised when Billy failed to report for work, prompting colleagues to check on him. A source told The Sun that Billy had been out the night before and 'seemed absolutely fine.'
Trainer
Warren Greatrex
expressed his sorrow, stating: 'It's hugely upsetting. He was a great member of the team with a great sense of humour.'

Part of a tragic pattern
Moffatt's death is the third in four years linked to the same stables. In July 2021, Michael Pitt, 19, was found dead at a petrol station after taking his own life. In February 2022, David Thompson, 25, was discovered dead after previously being reported missing.
Reflecting on these past tragedies, Greatrex had said in 2022 after Thompson's passing: 'He didn't ride out but he loved his horses. We heard on Saturday morning that he had died and it was really hard to take, especially in the circumstances that we lost Michael Pitt last summer who was another person that was the life and soul of the yard and was a great part of the team.'
Tributes pour in
The racing community has responded with shock and grief.
Close friend and jockey Jack Wilmot wrote on social media:
'Billy, words can't describe the way I'm feeling. I'm absolutely heartbroken, I'll love you forever mate and will always carry you with me whatever I do.
Please, please, if you're struggling with something, please talk to someone.
Love you mate. Gone far too soon.'
Racing team
SJD Racing
also shared condolences in a public statement:
'So sad to hear of the passing of Billy Moffatt. Gone far too soon. We had the pleasure of helping him in his career as he wanted to learn to jump. Our thoughts are with his family. Please check in on your friends.'
Family appeal for support
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help repatriate Billy's body and belongings from Berkshire to his family in the North East and assist with funeral costs. James Moffatt shared via the campaign:
'I've been asked to set up a GoFundMe to help get our boy and all his belongings back home to the North East and help towards his funeral.
It's not something we would even think of doing as a family but his mam has asked rather than flowers, a small donation no matter how much would be greatly appreciated towards helping cover all the costs to get him home and buried.
The target is just a number set, anything at all will help, thanks for reading.'
As of now, more than £10,000 has been raised.

Patrick Mahomes opens up on father's DWI arrest and reveals how the incident deeply impacted his family
Patrick Mahomes gets brutally honest about father's 2024 DWI arrest and how it changed everything for him (Getty Images) In the high-pressure build-up to the 2024 Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes faced not only the weight of leading the Kansas City Chiefs but also an emotional storm away from the field. Just days before the biggest game of the season, his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr. , was arrested on a third DWI charge, forcing the star quarterback to navigate a deeply personal crisis under the public eye. Patrick Mahomes reflects on the struggles surrounding his father's DWI arrest Speaking on ESPN's Chiefs Kingdom, Mahomes candidly shared how the incident shadowed one of the most important moments of his career. 'It was during that Super Bowl. It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it,' he recalled. For Mahomes, the hardest part was seeing how the headlines extended beyond the game. 'I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that like, you can't keep doing the same things. ' — BroBible (@BroBible) Mahomes Sr., a former MLB pitcher, admitted how the arrest left him devastated. 'For him to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I've ever been through in my life,' he said, reflecting on the toll it took not only on his son but on their family's public image. Even Brittany Mahomes, who stood by her husband during the storm, revealed how the arrest shook their household. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unfriendliest Countries in the World, Ranked BigGlobalTravel Undo As a mother of three, she stressed the importance of setting an example for the younger generation. 'It finally hit him,' Brittany said, noting how Mahomes Sr. was reminded that his children and grandchildren 'are watching' every choice he makes. Patrick Mahomes Sr.'s admission and the lessons from the past In the episode, Mahomes Sr. confronted his past with unfiltered honesty. He admitted that being 'considered one of the best athletes in the world' had given him privileges—some of which he misused. 'Some of them you shouldn't take, and I took my fair share of them,' he confessed. He further acknowledged that alcohol was woven into his playing days, often dismissed as part of the culture of professional sports. 'It was just something that I've always done, just something that's in the game. I went out, partied a little bit, wasn't always where I was supposed to be,' he said. Mahomes, reflecting on his father's career, pointed out how he often underestimated his drinking because 'he could always still be on the baseball field' until his retirement in 2009. The February 2024 arrest in Tyler, Texas, where he recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.23, wasn't his first. Mahomes Sr. had previously served 40 days in jail for a 2018 DWI. Following his guilty plea this year, he served a 10-day sentence in October. For Patrick Mahomes, the ordeal was a test of resilience and focus, reminding the world that even star athletes carry heavy personal battles behind the spotlight of success.
