MACC probes military officers in southern Malaysia smuggling case
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the need for classified reports to assist investigations focused on the Straits of Melaka near Melaka and Johor.
'I would like to thank the Chief of Defence Force for supporting the MACC and facilitating our investigation.'
Azam added that MACC will approach MINDEF for confidential documents to strengthen the case.
Three active and two former senior officers from the army and navy were detained under Op Sohor for allegedly aiding smuggling operations.
Ten individuals, including an Indonesian national, were arrested in the Klang Valley during the operation.
The joint effort involved MACC's Intelligence Division and the Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS).
All suspects were presented at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court for remand under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009. - Bernama

Indonesian man kills wife three months into marriage for insulting his parents
PONOROGO: A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife just three months into their marriage after she reportedly insulted his parents, reports said. According to Indonesian news portal the case came to light after police received a report of a woman's body discovered in Goa Lowo Forest, Sampung district, on Tuesday. Authorities later identified the woman, which led to the arrest of her husband. Ponorogo police chief Andin Wisnu Sudibyo was quoted as saying that initial investigations suggested the suspect became enraged by remarks made by his wife. The couple had been in an unregistered marriage for about a year and a half before formalising their union three months ago. "On the day of the incident, the suspect picked up his wife and took her to the scene. During the journey, they argued, and the victim allegedly insulted his parents, triggering his anger. "The suspect then slammed the victim against a tree before strangling her with a Wi-Fi cable found at the scene, leaving the body half-naked, and later took her jacket and mobile phone," Andin said. He added that the suspect later concocted a story, claiming the victim had been killed while trying to collect a debt. The suspect now faces murder charges and could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Johor Regent aids MACC in Op Sohor smuggling probe
CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed receiving crucial information from Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail in its ongoing Op Sohor investigations. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated the Regent actively supports efforts to combat smuggling at national borders. 'His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Johor has been highly cooperative and wants such illegal activities stopped,' Azam told reporters after the Anti-Corruption Graduates Convention (KOMAWAR). He clarified the syndicate operates solely in the southern region, with no recent arrests made. 'If money laundering links emerge involving other beneficiaries, we will expand our probe,' Azam added. The commission is also investigating an online media firm linked to two suspects detained under Op Sohor. 'They worked for an undisclosed company, and we're examining its establishment purpose,' Azam revealed. The suspects allegedly leaked confidential data to the smuggling network. Five senior military officers were arrested earlier for colluding with syndicates to smuggle drugs and cigarettes worth RM5 million monthly. Azam emphasised KOMAWAR's role in educating graduates against corruption and fostering integrity. The biennial programme aims to cultivate youth support for transparent governance. - Bernama
