Proposed 'pension-like' payments under SSPA can help protect retirees from scams
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to introduce 'pension-like' payments for permanent appointees under the new Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) can help protect retirees from falling victim to scams, said Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.
The Public Service director-general (KPPA) said the move would also ensure retirees' savings are managed more efficiently.
'Based on simulations conducted with the Finance Ministry (MOF) and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), those who enter service at Grade 1 at the age of 20 and retire at 60, with 40 years of service, would have accumulated savings of RM1.36 million.
'I am currently drafting a proposal (for those retiring under the new scheme) to also receive monthly payments similar to pensioners. Both EPF and MOF have agreed to this.
'For instance, if the retiree requires around RM25,000 a year, the balance of the savings will be reinvested in EPF, allowing them to earn dividends at year-end. I believe this is a very attractive model,' he told a press conference after the 'Bicara Figura: Menelusuri Aspirasi Memaknai Reformasi' at the RISDA headquarters here today.
Wan Ahmad Dahlan said the finalised proposal would be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for consideration this October.
He said the study on the implementation of the new concept is in its final stage before being submitted to the Cabinet.
'I have already presented the initial concept to the prime minister, and in October, I will present the final version.
'The proposal still needs to go through the Cabinet, Parliament and another necessary process, as we are shifting from the current permanent and pensionable appointment system, which is enshrined in the Constitution and relevant laws, to a new system,' he said.
Prior to this, Anwar said the government is reviewing a new method for permanent appointments and contributions and conducting in-depth studies to determine the best strategy for the government and newly appointed civil servants.
The Bicara Figura programme is a strategic initiative organised by RISDA to serve as a high-impact platform for inspiration and knowledge-sharing by prominent figures in the public sector and organisational development.
The programme aims to promote values of leadership, accountability, innovation and a culture of excellence in facing current challenges in management and service delivery.

RM250,000 concrete drain completed at Lrg Semaba 7 to tackle flooding issues

KUCHING (June 7): The construction of a concrete drain at the T-junction of Lorong Semaba 7 has been completed at the cost of RM250,000, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap. He said the rural transformation programme (RTP) project had resolved long-standing drainage and flooding issues in the area. 'With the completion of this phase, residents in the neighbourhood can now look forward to improved water flow, reduced flood risk and better overall living conditions,' he said in a statement. He emphasised that the initiative is more than just a basic infrastructure upgrade. 'It is a commitment to ensure that every part of Kota Sentosa is not left behind in terms of infrastructure. Too many of our older residential areas still suffer from outdated or insufficient basic amenities. 'I am working tirelessly to correct that,' he added. Yap also revealed that the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has conducted survey and assessment works on the opposite side of the same T-junction, as well as another stretch of earth drains along Lorong Semaba 11. The proposed next phase will involve the construction of additional concrete drains, with a combined estimated cost of RM400,000, and MPP engineers are currently preparing the Bill of Quantities to move the project forward. Reaffirming his commitment to infrastructure development, Yap said he will continue to advocate for improvements under the RTP and other government allocations. 'Development cannot be concentrated in one area. As your elected representative, I will continue to press for improvements – street by street, lorong (lane) by lorong – so that all residents of Kota Sentosa enjoy the benefits of proper, modern infrastructure.' Yap also highlighted that his efforts are aligned with the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government's focus on inclusive development and narrowing the infrastructure gap, particularly in semi-urban and suburban communities. Rep distributes RM147,000 in MRP grants to Bawang Assan NGOs

SIBU (June 7): Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has distributed RM147,000 in Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to 14 recipients, comprising non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and associations within the Bawang Assan state constituency. This marks the first group of recipients to receive allocations for the year through the Bawang Assan Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Service Centre. 'We have over 100 recipients in total, with an overall allocation of RM2 million. The remaining grants will be distributed next week,' said Wong.
