Electoral roll revision row: ECI summons West Bengal chief secretary to Delhi
On August 5 the ECI had directed the Mamata Banerjee-government to suspend four officers - two Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and two Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) - and lodge FIRs against them, as well as a data entry operator, after the poll body accused them of adding names of fictitious voters to the electoral roll and compromising data security.
However, the state government withdrew only one officer and a data entry operator from election-related duties on Monday and initiated an inquiry.
'Manoj Pant, the West Bengal chief secretary, has been summoned to Delhi,' an ECI official said. Pant has been asked to appear at 5 pm on Wednesday.
After chief minister Mamata Banerjee made it clear that her government will not penalise the officers as directed by the ECI, the poll panel gave the state government a deadline till 3pm on Monday to submit a compliance report on the actions taken against the four officers and the data entry operator.
Pant, in his letter to ECI secretary Sujeet Kumar Mishra, on Monday said only the services of AERO of Moyna AC and the data entry operator of Baruipur Purba were withdrawn from electoral revision and election-related duties.
'Further action taken report will be submitted post completion of enquiry,' the chief secretary had said in his letter.
'Initiating proceedings before a detailed enquiry against these officers, who have consistently demonstrated sincerity and competence, may be a disproportionately harsh measure. Such an action could have a demoralising impact not only on the individuals but also on the broader team of officers engaged in electoral responsibilities and other administrative functions,' the letter added.

Assam: Final voter rolls published ahead of BTC elections
Guwahati: The Final Photo Electoral Rolls for all 40 constituencies of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) were published on Wednesday, marking a key step ahead of the upcoming council election, the Assam State Election Commission said in a statement. This year's roll reflects a significant expansion, with the inclusion of 81 new villages in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) as per the delimitation notification issued by the Assam government on June 25, 2025. According to the updated data, the BTR now has a total of 26,58,477 registered voters, comprising 13,23,673 male electors, 13,34,787 female electors, and 17 voters classified as 'others". The council area is served by 3,279 polling stations, although the figure may change as the final list of polling stations is scheduled for release on August 18 following a rationalisation exercise. The Election Commission has made the Final Electoral Roll (without photographs) available for public inspection at multiple locations, including Circle Officer offices, Block Development Officer offices, municipal bodies, town committees, sub-registry offices, police stations, tea garden offices, and Gaon Panchayat or Village Council Development Committee offices within each constituency. The official statement said that the voters can also access the rolls online through the OERMS portal and district administration websites. 'Electors may verify their details using their EPIC (Elector's Photo Identity Card) number issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) or by downloading the electoral roll for their respective polling stations from the citizen corner on the website,' it also mentioned. In a move aimed at encouraging greater participation, the Commission has also announced that eligible individuals whose names appear in the ECI's supplementary roll and who hold valid EPIC cards will still be able to file claims for inclusion in the BTC electoral roll until the last date for filing nominations. This provision applies to those qualifying as voters under the ECI's current summary revision exercise. The updated electoral roll is expected to serve as a critical tool for both voters and political parties as campaigning intensifies in the run-up to the BTC elections. Answering a question at the Lok Sabha on August 11 regarding the roll out of three instalments of arrears that were frozen during Covid-19, Member of Parliament Anand Bhaduria cited economic disruption during that time and said that the arrears were frozen due to that reason. The government pays DA and arrears a cost-of-living adjustment to its employees and pensioners to offset the impact of inflation. DA is usually given twice a year to employees, while DR or Dearness Relief is paid to pensioners. The arrears are credited on a pro-rated basis. However, during Covid-19, the government had frozen these arrears for a period of 18 months, which comes down to three instalments.
