Duleep Trophy: Shardul Thakur to lead star studded West Zone team
The reason for not naming Iyer as skipper was that the selection committee felt that he might be picked for the Asia Cup team which is scheduled to play from September 9 onward. The Duleep Trophy is scheduled to kick start from August 28 in Bengaluru.
Thakur has been playing a vital role in Mumbai's Ranji success for the last few years. He has been contributing both with bat and ball. Over the last two seasons, where Mumbai has been bailed out from runs from lower-order, Thakur has had a lead role to play alongside Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani.
The two also join Thakur in the West Zone squad that also has place for pacer Tushar Deshpande.
Earlier, Iyer had expressed his availability to play in the Duleep Trophy. Iyer has played 14 Tests for India and scored one century to go with five fifties, but he hasn't played the longest format internationally since February 2024 against England. He was, however, an integral part of the Indian team that lifted the 50-overs Champions Trophy title in Dubai earlier this year.
More recently, under Iyer's captaincy, Punjab Kings entered the final of the Indian Premier League's 2025 season, where they lost to the Royal Challengers of Bengaluru in Ahmedabad. Iyer wasn't picked for the Indian Test tour to England that is currently underway, as the selectors decided to go with Karun Nair, who had prolific returns in domestic cricket more recently.
The 2025–26 domestic season will begin with the Duleep Trophy (August 28, 2025) and conclude with the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy (April 3, 2026). The Ranji Trophy season is set to begin from October 15, with Phase 1 going up until 19 November and Phase 2 of the season (Elite) extending from 22 January 2026 to 1 February.
This season the Duleep Trophy returns to the zonal format. The squads are picked by the state selectors from respective zones. South Zone were the champions when the Duleep Trophy was held in the 2023-24 season.
West Zone squad: Shardul Thakur (Capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Aarya Desai, Harvik Desai (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jaymeet Patel, Manan Hingrajia, Saurabh Nawale (wk), Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Dharmendra Jadeja, Tushar Deshpande, Arzan Nagwaswala.

India face Pakistan in Dubai as ACC announces 2025 Asia Cup venues
India will face Pakistan in Dubai on September 14 in the 2025 Asia Cup, with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announcing the venues for the tournament on Saturday. While the schedule had been announced earler, the venues were yet to be revealed and were unveiled only on August 2. 'The tournament will be played across two world class venues of Dubai, which will host 11 matches, and Abu Dhabi, which will host eight matches, bringing a total of 19 T20 internationals to fans across the region,' the ACC said in its statement. Apart from India and Pakistan, the other participants in the tournament are Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, UAE and Oman. India are designated hosts, although the tournament will be played in the venues in UAE. India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are slotted in Group A while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in Group B. The teams last met in an ODI during the Champions Trophy at the same venue, with India beating Pakistan by six wickets on the back of Virat Kohli's century. Their last T20 meeting came during the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York with a Rohit Sharma-led Indian side edging their rivals by six runs. With only seven months left until the next T20 World Cup iteration to be played in India and Sri Lanka, the continental tournament will return to the T20 format. The previous edition of the Asia Cup was played in the ODI format on the road to the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where India demolished hosts Sri Lanka to lift the title. The possibility of at least one match up between India and Pakistan at the Asia Cup has been a matter of some controversy. The ACC has stated in its statement that there is potential for more games between the two teams after the group stage with their set to be a Super Four stage and then a final. Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary is among those who questioned how India are playing Pakistan in the tournament after the Pahalgam terror attack in April. 'The situation was so bad, how can we think of an India-Pakistan match? I feel that it should be considered again and the India-Pakistan match should not happen in such an environment,' Tiwary said, speaking on ANI. The two sides were slated to meet in the Women's Asia Cup for emerging players last month. However, the BCCI withdrew from the tournament in the aftermath of the terror attacks and the consequent escalation in hostilities.

Hyderabad, Aug 2 (PTI) FIFA on Saturday launched its first talent academy for girls in India in collaboration with the All India Football Federation to provide elite training to talented footballers scouted from various parts of the country. The international football federation signed a MoU with the AIFF and the Telangana government for the opening of the academy, which will 'reinforce India's commitment to inclusive and structured grassroots development" of football. The academy will be located at the Gachibowli Stadium Complex here and will offer year-round high-performance training, with residential facilities, education, medical care, nutrition, and mental wellness to 60 elite players comprising 30 boys (U14) and 30 girls (U16), as well as 10 players from Telangana in each category, said an AIFF release. AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey termed the launch as a 'defining moment" for the sport in India. 'The launch of India's first FIFA Talent Academy for girls and second academy for boys marks a defining moment in our journey towards equitable football development," he said. 'This collaboration with the Government of Telangana, under FIFA's global Talent Development Scheme, reflects our collective resolve to identify, nurture, and empower young talent – especially girls – from across the nation," said Chaubey. He said the the academy will help the country realise its dream of qualifying for the U17 men's and women's FIFA World Cups. 'This academy will not only groom elite athletes but also inspire a generation of footballers who can dream of representing India at the highest levels. It is a proud day for Indian football and a strong step forward towards our goal of qualifying for the U17 men's and women's FIFA World Cups," added Chaubey. AIFF will lead the operations, technical framework, talent scouting, and training curriculum in coordination with FIFA, while the Sports Authority of Telangana will oversee infrastructure, logistics, education, financial and welfare support of the players. The initiative aligns with AIFF's 'Vision 2047", which is to build India into a leading footballing nation. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the academy will provide a channel for players to reach the national and international level. 'This academy is a game-changer for girls in football. It is not only the first of its kind in India but also one of the very few globally under FIFA's Talent Development Scheme. Young talents — especially girls — from Telangana and beyond will now have access to elite infrastructure, education, and a clear pathway to the national and international stage," said Reddy.
