Antoine Semenyo praised for his reaction as Bournemouth express anger over racist abuse
Bournemouth have expressed their shock and anger that the opening match of the Premier League season was overshadowed by an incident of alleged racist abuse towards Antoine Semenyo.
The match between the Cherries and Liverpool on Friday night at Anfield was halted in the first half after Semenyo reported that a supporter had said something to him while he was preparing to take a throw-in. Liverpool later released a statement condemning the alleged actions while confirming that the police are now investigating.
Arne Slot's side went on to win the game 4-2 with late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah. But Semenyo produced a remarkable performance in the second half, scoring twice to drag the away side back into the game.
The Bournemouth winger kept his composure to tuck in David Brooks' cross for 2-1 before charging forwards on another counter-attack to find the bottom corner for 2-2. While full of admiration for his team-mate, captain Adam Smith expressed fury at full-time.
"Totally unacceptable. Kind of in shock it happened in this day and age. I don't know how Ant has carried on playing and come up with his goals," Smith told Sky Sports.
"He's a little bit down. Something needs to be done. Taking a knee has taken no effect. We've supported him and hopefully he'll be OK. I wanted him to react [after scoring], that's what I'd have done. I'd have gone straight over there. It shows what kind of man he is to report it to the ref and carry on. Fair play to Ant.
"It's more anger. Shocked. I said to the ref I wanted him removed immediately but the police went and sorted it. The Liverpool players were very supportive to Ant and the rest of the team. Just so angry.
"We've had discussions with the Premier League about it so they have been taking it seriously. I don't know what else we can do. We've been doing it for a long time now and no-one is getting it. I just feel sorry for Ant and he's had to take that. The whole country is watching and it's shocking."
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola added: "The referee explained to both managers straight away the situation. It is a big shame we have to start talking about these things.
"The Liverpool manager and the players they feel it the same. Everyone understands that these things have to be out of everywhere but especially football.
"Now we have to go again to talk to the police and the officials. I think for sure he (Semenyo) will have it in his head [now] and it shouldn't be like this."
Kick it Out said in a statement: "Thirty minutes into the first Premier League game of the season, and Bournemouth 's Antoine Semenyo is racially abused by someone in the crowd.
"Two nights ago, Tottenham 's Mathys Tel was racially abused online. This is a stark reminder of an ugly reality: black players are facing this every week. "We stand in solidarity with Antoine and can't praise him enough for his courage in calling this out after such a distressing episode before going on to score twice.
"Anthony Taylor and his refereeing team also deserve credit for acting swiftly and decisively. We will keep pushing to kick this disgusting behaviour out of the game through punishments, accountability and education, but football still has a long way to go."

Hojlund makes Man Utd transfer decision after being left out of Arsenal clash
Rasmus Hojlund is ready to approve a move away from Manchester United after being left out of the squad for the Premier League opener against Arsenal. Widespread reports claim Hojlund has been left out of Manchester United's squad for the visit of Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. United signed Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko last week in a £74m deal from RB Leipzig. Hojlund said earlier in the summer that he planned to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place in the team. Even after Sesko's arrival, Hojlund was said to be determined to stay put and believed he could still make an impact for the Red Devils. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. However, La Gazzetta dello Sport say Hojlund would change his mind and approve a summer move if he was benched against Arsenal or left out altogether. More Trending AC Milan have been in talks to sign the Denmark international, while RB Leipzig are believed to be interested in a deal. Reports in Italy claim Hojlund prefers a permanent transfer rather than a loan as he does not want the summer of 2026 to be surrounded by the same level of speculation as this one. United have been discussing a loan deal with Milan with a 40m euro buy-out clause but Hojlund is said to want a lower fee to boost his chances of a permanent move. Oliver Glasner makes Eberechi Eze feelings very clear after Crystal Palace U-turn
Eberechi Eze looks to be on the verge of a move to Tottenham Hotspur from Crystal Palace but an exit might not be as straightforward as first thought with Oliver Glasner now speaking out Oliver Glasner has been singing Eberechi Eze's praises despite an imminent move to Tottenham Hotspur. The winger has been identified as a priority target for Thomas Frank 's men over the closing fortnight of the window. It was suggested that they were stepping up their interest and were looking to pay around £60m for his services. And it was then reported that Eze would not play a part in Crystal Palace 's Premier League season opener against Chelsea on Sunday. Eze was then named in Palace's starting XI vs the Blues despite the speculation, while Glasner has also been full of praise for his star winger. Asked by Sky Austria which player currently embodies the spirit he has built at Selhurst Park, he only had one answer. Glasner said: 'Eberechi Eze – a player who can score a goal out of nowhere that brings us victory. Sometimes you need that kind of momentum, without everyone having played tactically perfect and eight one-twos beforehand.' Glasner has also sent Palace chiefs a warning over the futures of Eze - and Marc Guehi who has been linked with Liverpool. He has claimed that improvement could be difficult should the pair be sold. Asked what his targets are for the forthcoming campaign, the Austrian responded: 'That obviously depends on how the transfer window goes. If you constantly lose your best players and don't replace them accordingly, it will be difficult to maintain or even improve your level. 'Except for the first eight match days, we finished at least seventh for the rest of last season. If that's possible, I can't think of any reasons why we couldn't achieve that for the entire season.' Elsewhere, Spurs boss Thomas Frank has also dropped a hint about his side's pursuit of Eze. Speaking after his side's opening day win vs Burnley, he said: 'We are definitely in the market. "I said it before, Daniel and Johan and Vinai are working relentlessly to try to do their best to improve the squad, but we only want to improve the squad if we can get players in that can improve squad. I want to keep it like is.' Asked specifically about Eze, the Dane elected to remain slightly more tight-lipped. He said: 'I have that nice principle that I would like to speak about the players that are in-house and all the other speculations I don't want to speak too much about that.'

'I was eyed by Man Utd and Liverpool – now I could help out Alexander Isak'
Alexander Isak's future with Newcastle United remains up in the air as the striker missed the Magpies' trip to Villa Park on Saturday, and the arrival of one Ligue 1 star on Tyneside could help move him on Goncalo Ramos has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, where his arrival could help put an end to Alexander Isak's dramatic transfer saga. The Swede has reportedly claimed he will never play for the Magpies again, regardless of whether he secures a move away from Tyneside before deadline day. Liverpool remain the only likely destination for the 25-year-old at present, but are yet to re-enter talks with Newcastle after seeing their initial bid of £110million plus add-ons rebuffed. And with less than two weeks to go before the summer window shuts, all parties involved will hope for a swift resolution for the striker one way or the other. As a result of Isak's absence, Anthony Gordon was deployed as a makeshift striker during Newcastle's goalless draw with a 10-man Aston Villa away from home in their Premier League opener on Saturday. And without a proven No. 9 in their ranks for their clash with Liverpool a week on Monday, Eddie Howe will be eager to recruit himself a new frontman before then. The Magpies have been quoted £40m for Brentford's Yoane Wissa, who scored 19 goals in 35 outings for the Bees last term. And with the 28-year-old seemingly favouring a move to St James' Park, it could only be a matter of time before a deal between the two clubs is brokered. However, it's former Manchester United and Liverpool target, Ramos, who Newcastle have recently been linked with which could prove incredibly fruitful in finding a new home for Isak in the coming weeks. The 24-year-old has impressed with Paris Saint-Germain since joining the Ligue 1 giants in 2023, with 34 goals to his name across all competitions thus far. The Red Devils were reportedly in talks with PSG to bring the centre-forward to Old Trafford this summer before swooping for the trio of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo, while it is said that Liverpool are currently assessing the suitability of Ramos at Anfield in the event that they are unable to secure Isak. It wouldn't be the first time that the Reds have taken one of Newcastle's targets this summer, hijacking the Magpies chase of Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike and welcoming him in a £79m move. However, holding off on Ramos to allow Newcastle to sign him could prove incredibly beneficial for Liverpool in their pursuit for Isak. With two strikers in Wissa and Ramos in their ranks, it may spur Newcastle to provide a little wiggle room on their firm £150m valuation of Isak at present, which could see the Reds meet them in the middle to take him off their hands. It's a big ask for the Magpies, however, who have struggled to recruit top-tier talent in the current window. Not only did Newcastle miss out on Ekitike, Mbeumo and Sesko, but they also saw Liam Delap and Joao Pedro favour moves to Chelsea, Dean Huijsen join Real Madrid, and James Trafford return to Manchester City from Burnley. It's thought that Ramos is settled in the French capital and that he's not overly keen on a move to the Premier League, despite interest. Meanwhile, with expected wages reported to be in the region of £200,000 per-week, and with a valuation of around £68m at present, it may turn out to be yet another fruitless endeavour for Newcastle.
