
Surge in bank account ownerships positions UAE among most banked nations
The UAE has emerged as one of the world's most banked nations on the back of remarkable surge in bank account ownerships, according to a new independent survey.
The YouGov study, commissioned by the personalised financial marketplace Daleel, reveals that 94 per cent of UAE residents now hold a personal bank account, a notable increase from 85 per cent in 2021, according to the World Bank's Global Findex Database. This positions the UAE among the world's most banked nations, rivaling the United States and reflecting the success of the UAE's ambitious financial inclusion strategies under the 'We the UAE 2031' vision and the UAE Digital Economy Strategy.
The YouGov survey, which explored how UAE residents engage with financial services — from product research to confidence in their financial tools — highlights both progress and challenges in the nation's financial landscape.
'The UAE's near-universal bank account ownership is a testament to its forward-thinking policies,' said PK Shrivastava, CEO of Daleel. 'However, there's a clear opportunity to offer more personalized financial products to move beyond the 'one-size-fits-all' model.'
The UAE's rise in account ownership aligns with its strategic goals to enhance digital transformation and financial inclusion. According to the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), total bank deposits grew by 1.2 per cent, from Dh2,840.7 billion in January 2025 to Dh2,874.6 billion in February 2025. This growth was driven by a 0.8 per cent increase in resident deposits, reaching Dh2,625.5 billion, and a 5.1 per cent surge in non-resident deposits, totaling Dh249.1 billion.
Within resident deposits, government-related entities saw a 3.8 per cent rise, private sector deposits increased by 1.4 per cent, and non-banking financial institutions recorded a 5.6 per cent uptick, though government sector deposits fell by 4.0 per cent. These figures underscore the UAE's robust financial ecosystem, supported by initiatives like the CBUAE's Financial Inclusion Framework, which promotes accessible banking services. The UAE's digital banking infrastructure, including mobile banking apps and fintech innovations, has also played a pivotal role in expanding access, particularly for underserved communities.
Despite high account ownership, the survey reveals a significant confidence gap in financial products. While two-thirds of account holders trust their current accounts, 76 per cent lack confidence in at least one financial product they use. Specifically, 65 per cent of mortgage holders doubt they have the optimal plan, 62 per cent question their personal or auto loans, and 50 per cent are uncertain about their credit card choices. This uncertainty often stems from product complexity, opaque terms, and insufficient consumer education.
Behavioural trends also emerged from the survey. Women are twice as likely as men to periodically review their financial products, reflecting greater diligence in seeking better options. Meanwhile, 90 per cent of respondents regularly review or switch products, with many prioritising tailored solutions. Emirati nationals stand out as the most proactive, with 80 per cent annually reassessing their financial portfolios.
The findings signal a growing demand for transparency and personalisation in the UAE's financial sector. 'Consumers need clear, jargon-free information to make informed decisions,' said Ridaa Shah, COO of Daleel. 'In 2025, we expect the UAE's financial industry to prioritise transparency and customization, empowering residents to choose products that align with their needs.'
The UAE's fintech sector is responding to this demand. Platforms like Daleel leverage data analytics to offer personalised product recommendations, while banks are investing in user-friendly digital interfaces. The CBUAE's 2024 Consumer Protection Regulations further support this shift by mandating clear disclosures and fair practices.
Banking sector analysts said the UAE's near-universal bank account ownership marks a milestone in its journey toward financial inclusion, driven by strategic vision and digital innovation. However, addressing the confidence gap in financial products is critical to sustaining this progress.
They said by prioritising transparency, simplifying product offerings, and leveraging fintech, the UAE can empower residents to make smarter financial choices, reinforcing its position as a global leader in financial services.

Support for Israel in Europe drops to record low, finds YouGov poll
Public support for Israel in European countries has fallen to its lowest recorded level, according to a recent survey by YouGov. Fewer than a fifth of respondents in six countries held a favourable view of Israel in a poll carried out last month. The survey was conducted between 12 and 26 May in Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain and Italy. Asked which side they sympathised with in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, 14 percent of Brits said they sided with Israel, while 32 percent sided with Palestinians. Twenty-one percent said both sides equally, and 32 percent were unsure. The proportion of people that sided with Israel was 18 percent in France, 17 percent in Germany, 18 percent in Denmark, 15 percent in Spain and just 7 percent in Italy. In five of the six countries, more respondents said they could understand the attitudes Palestinians had to the conflict - even if they didn't personally agree with them - than those who said they could not. The difference was most stark in Britain, where 51 percent said they could understand the Palestinian viewpoint, whereas 22 percent said they could not. Asked the same question about Israel, more respondents in France, Germany, Spain and Italy said they could not understand the Israeli viewpoint than those who said they could. Net favourability towards Israel was at the lowest since YouGov began polling the question in Germany, France, Denmark, Italy and Spain. Respondents in all of the countries said they did not think Hamas' attack on 7 October 2023 was justified. Similarly, respondents in all six overwhelmingly said Israel's war on Gaza since October 2023 was unjustified. On a more specific question about Israeli actions, between just 6 (Italy) and 16 (France) percent across the countries agreed that Israel was right to send ground troops into Gaza, and that Israel generally responded in a proportionate way to Hamas' attack. More people - between 29 (Italy) and 40 (Germany) percent - across the six countries thought Israel was right to send in troops but went too far and caused too many casualties. Between 12 (Germany) and 24 (Italy) percent thought that Israel should not have used military force in Gaza at all. Asked whether they thought a permanent peace agreement was likely in the next decade, respondents in every country were more likely to say it was unrealistic than realistic. Several of the European countries surveyed, including France, Spain, Italy and the UK, have halted the supply of some weapons to Israel since the war began. The UK and France, along with Canada, have threatened Israel with sanctions if it fails to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter. France is also leading efforts to lobby other European countries, including the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands, to recognise Palestinian statehood at a UN conference in New York opening on 17 June. Some 147 of 193 UN member states currently recognise the State of Palestine. European states Spain, Ireland and Norway agreed to recognition last year. Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed more than 54,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 120,000 since October 2023. A further 10,000 are missing and presumed dead.

CBUAE and CBK sign MoUs to promote domestic currency usage and interlink payment and messaging systems
Abu Dhabi: His Excellency Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), and His Excellency Dr. Kamau Thugge, Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to establish a framework supporting the use of local currencies in settling cross-border transactions and interlinking their payment and messaging systems. The signing ceremony was attended by the Assistant Governors of CBUAE and senior officials from both entities. Under the first MoU, the CBUAE and the CBK will strengthen cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Kenya to support the sustainable development of both financial markets. This agreement will also encourage the use of local currencies in settling cross-border commercial transactions. Under the second MoU, both parties will cooperate on payment systems by exploring opportunities of interlinking instant payment systems and national card switches, in compliance with the regulatory and supervisory frameworks. His Excellency Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, said: 'The signing of these two MoUs reflects strong economic ties between the UAE and the Republic of Kenya. The use of local currencies in settling cross-border transactions, coupled with cooperation in linking instant payment systems, will broaden investment and commercial opportunities for both nations. This initiative paves the way for greater collaboration in the financial and banking sectors, and we look forward to working closely with our partners in Kenya to strengthen financial stability and achieve our mutual interests.' His Excellency Dr. Kamau Thugge, Governor of the CBK, said: 'The economic and cultural links between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates go back many decades. Our two peoples have always traded between themselves, and this has only strengthened in recent years. Central Bank imposes Dhs3.5m fine on exchange house in UAE
The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) imposed a financial sanction on an exchange house, pursuant to Article (14) of the Federal Decree Law No. (20) of 2018 on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Illegal Organisations and its amendments. The financial sanction of Dhs3,500,000 (Dhs3.5 million) has been imposed after assessing the findings of an examination conducted by the CBUAE, which revealed that the exchange house failed to comply with AML/CFT policies and procedures. The CBUAE, through its supervisory and regulatory mandates, endeavours to ensure that all exchange houses, their owners, and staff abide by the UAE laws, regulations and standards established by the CBUAE to maintain transparency and integrity of the financial transactions and safeguard the UAE financial system.
