Drug suspects jump into river to escape during Kuantan raid

KUANTAN: Three men suspected to be high on drugs were daring enough to jump into the river to shake off the authorities on their trail during Ops Guardian in Sungai Belat here today.
Deputy director of operations of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Pahang, Maritime Captain Mohd Marmizi Md Nor said the dramatic river chase occurred at around 10am today when his party was carrying out a joint operation with other security and enforcement agencies.
He said two men were trying to hide under the jetty while the other one swam away to escape.
"Besides inspecting fishing boats in Sungai Kuantan, we also conducted raids on hot spots that were targeted, namely the jetty here.
"In the end, we managed to arrest the three male suspects, aged between 40 and 50 years old, trying to escape on suspicion of being involved in drug abuse," he said here today.
Meanwhile, he said Ops Guardian, held for the first time in collaboration with seven other agencies, took place over two days and will conclude tomorrow.
He said the focus of the operation was on the Sungai Kuantan estuary and Kuantan Port to check for any violations of the law.

Turkish national still missing off Pulau Yu, may have gone down with yacht, says maritime chief

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — A Turkish national who remains missing after a yacht capsized off Pulau Yu, Kuala Terengganu, last Tuesday is believed to have gone down with the vessel, Utusan Malaysia reported. According to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, initial investigations suggest Eser Demirkol, 52, was asleep during the incident and was unable to escape in time. 'Two of the victims managed to jump into the sea, but the missing individual is believed to have still been inside the yacht when it sank,' he was quoted as saying at a press conference after the Malaysian Maritime 2025 Media Day programme at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Maritime Academy (AMSAS) in Kuantan today. The two individuals who jumped into the sea — yacht captain Ahmet Volkan Ata, 52, and Ates Demiroren, 42 — were later rescued. Utusan Malaysia also reported that no new leads have emerged so far regarding the missing person or the yacht, but search and rescue (SAR) operations are ongoing. The current search area spans 7.89 square nautical miles, and efforts are expected to continue over the next few days depending on weather and sea conditions. The incident, which took place about 30 nautical miles off Pulau Yu, on July 29 involved three Turkish nationals who were sailing from Pulau Tioman to Pattani, Thailand, when their yacht sank due to rough weather.

Zara Qairina death probe completed, case to AGC

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: The Vibes Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Police have completed their investigation into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, who was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar, on July 16 and died the next day. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the case will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers next week, with 60 witnesses interviewed. Zara's mother, through lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri, denied linking the case to any VIPs and urged the public not to spread unverified claims, warning such actions could hinder investigations. Police found no evidence connecting the incident to political or influential figures. Separately, Saifuddin announced plans to boost the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's capabilities with two new offshore patrol vessels and the arrival of the ex-USCGC Steadfast in November. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
