Venkatesh urges Centre to support farmers using tax money from sale of tobacco
Speaking at the 25th Tobacco Institute of India (TII) Tobacco Farmers' Awards in Mysuru on Tuesday, Mr. Venkatesh said the Centre earns more than ₹13,000 crore in tax from the sale of tobacco in Karnataka and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, asking how much of it does the Centre spend on the farmers.
Mr. Venkatesh said the tobacco farmers who had contributed so much tax to the government, deserved support from the Centre.
He urged the Tobacco Board to come up with programmes for the welfare of the tobacco farmers.
Mr. Venkatesh pointed out that Periyapatna accounted for half of the tobacco cultivated in the State, while the remaining half came from other taluks including Hunsur, H.D. Kote, and K.R. Nagar in Mysuru district.
He cautioned the tobacco farmers against cultivating the second tobacco crop in the same season. When the farmers realise that the tobacco crop will fall short of the ceiling fixed by the Tobacco Board, many farmers resort to taking up planting again. He warned the farmers against such a practice.
Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar emphasised the need to reduce high cost of tobacco production through adoption of modern technology.

Centre grants additional ₹432.19 crore for Samagra Shiksha scheme in AP
To help the School Education Department in the State implement initiatives effectively, the Centre has sanctioned an additional ₹432.19 crore for the 'Samagra Shiksha' scheme this year. According to a statement issued by the department, it said that ₹167.46 crore has been sanctioned for setting up Information and Communication Technology (ICT) labs, smart classrooms and science labs across schools. For upgradation of the DIET (District Institutes of Education and Training) colleges into Centres of Excellence, 96% i.e. ₹43.23 crore of the ₹45 crore has been sanctioned this year, with an assurance of further allocation of funds in phases for converting the remaining DIET colleges into Centres of Excellence. Under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA) scheme, a sum of ₹11 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of four hostels for tribal students in the State. This flagship programme of the Central Government aims at improving the social and economic conditions of tribal communities. The scheme will be implemented over five years from 2024–25 to 2028–29, focusing on holistic development of tribal-majority villages through better infrastructure, education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities. Under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Nyay Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN), funds to the tune of ₹210.5 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of 79 hostels across the state in two phases. Last year, only four hostels were sanctioned. This year, however, the Centre approved the highest-ever allocation for 79 hostels in Andhra Pradesh. Besides, 80 additional schools have been granted to Andhra Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme.

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose led a conference on campus security, tribal student welfare. Campus security, tribal student welfare, and higher education reforms took centre-stage at the vice chancellors' conference chaired by West Bengal Governor and Chancellor C V Ananda Bose at Raj Bhavan, an official said on Wednesday. Several measures were proposed for fast-track implementation across universities in West Bengal, he said. One of the key decisions taken in the meeting held on Tuesday at the Raj Bhavan here was the introduction of AI-powered surveillance systems, including facial recognition technology, to monitor and record the movement of individuals on university campuses, he said. 'The move is aimed at strengthening campus security and addressing incidents of ragging," he said, adding that the implementation of these measures would be reviewed periodically to ensure accountability and results. The meeting also discussed the establishment of one school for the Scheduled Tribes in every university to assist and support tribal students academically and socially. In another welfare-oriented initiative, universities have been asked to introduce dedicated helpline numbers for migrant workers, with coordination mechanisms involving universities in other states to provide reciprocal support. 'The decisions were part of a larger push to modernise and streamline university functioning in line with national education reforms and growing social needs," the official said. Among the other key proposals agreed upon for implementation were improving accreditation and assessment systems in both universities and affiliated colleges, he said. Other proposals were launching a state-wide awareness campaign against youth drug addiction, conducting a comprehensive audit of manpower, including sanctioned, filled, and vacant posts, the bureaucrat said. It also recommended promoting digital transactions across university departments and administration, encouraging natural farming practices among women, especially in the three state agricultural universities, he stated. Besides, reviewing the rollout of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and creating awareness about the three new criminal laws introduced by the Centre were also suggested at the meeting. 'Ensuring a transparent appointment process for university faculty and staffers and developing green campuses, promoting energy efficiency, and exploring the use of non-conventional energy sources were also stressed upon," he said.
