Ministry draws up steps to tout Banthat Thong

The Commerce Ministry has proposed four urgent measures to position Banthat Thong Road as a global landmark for street food.
Business operators in the Banthat Thong area have faced numerous challenges, including a decline in tourist numbers, higher costs for rental space and decreased purchasing power among Thais.
Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat said the ministry recognises the potential of Banthat Thong Road and intends to develop it as a global landmark for street food.
To achieve the goal, the minister has proposed four urgent measures. These include strengthening business collaboration by forming an official committee as the primary channel for communication and decision-making to ensure unity.
He said the area must have a unique identity, which will include the introduction of themed special zones on weekends to create a distinctive ambience that will attract tourists.
To alleviate the financial strain on business operators, a "Thai Makes, Thai Uses, Thai Helps Thai" policy will be promoted. This initiative will connect local restaurants with high-quality, fairly priced products in a farm-to-table model.
The area will organise regular events, at least once a month, to create a vibrant atmosphere while also strengthening connections with other tourist destinations in Bangkok.
Representatives from the business community along Banthat Thong Road said the area is home to over 385 outlets.
However, there has been a drop in tourist numbers from the previously daily average of 30,000–40,000 visitors, although the current figures have not been disclosed.
As this downturn is affecting businesses, they call for urgent collaboration between the government and Chulalongkorn University to tackle this issue.
They propose establishing Banthat Thong Road as a "Creative Economy District" to enhance its attractiveness and leverage the area's potential.
Chulalongkorn University, the landowner, has pledged to assist local businesses by introducing programmes focused on cost reduction and environmental management.
The university also plans to facilitate "Night Street Food" events to draw in more tourists and boost the local economy.
Charasphat Preuksarattnawut, assistant to the president of Property Management and vice-president of Property Management at Chulalongkorn University, said the university has continued to enhance the landscape along Banthat Thong Road, aiming to support the city's expansion, both in the present and for future needs.
The university is also focused on fostering stronger partnerships, shifting the traditional landlord-tenant relationship into a collaborative effort.
This initiative aims to create a distinctive identity for Banthat Thong, aspiring to establish it as Thailand's street food landmark.
The key initiatives include the "Roundtable Project," which offers advisory services and equips entrepreneurs with essential knowledge in areas like artificial intelligence, finance, marketing and taxation.

The highlight events include "Edible Exhibition", transforming Central Park into an immersive art experience where the building itself becomes edible art. This will be followed by the full opening celebration this November, featuring even more global brands, according to CPN. The company aims to introduce world-class gastronomy as Asia's new culinary landmark, shaping a new city culture through international restaurants, art and fashion events, and dedicated spaces for curated happenings that will inspire new lifestyle trends all year round. After the grand opening, Central Park is expected to welcome more than 25 million visitors annually, or 70,000 visitors a day including both Thais and foreign tourists, he said. Kunayudh Dej-udom, asset director at Central Park, said the development blends urban living with nature at its prime location near Silom and Rama IV roads, opposite Lumpini Park. Central Park is designed with future flexibility to support evolving urban lifestyles, and all four components -- shopping centre, hotel, office and residences -- are interconnected with green spaces, including the 7-rai roof park. The mall plans to offer more than 550 leading brands, including for the first time in Thailand Kiwamiya, a teppanyaki restaurant renowned for its authentic wagyu steak from Japan; Koubai, a premium shabu-shabu; Long Jing Chinese fusion cuisine from Hangzhou; and Super Matcha, a premium green tea from South Korea. Some eateries are offering new concepts, while others are listed in the Michelin Guide and 70 street food legends will be featured, said Mr Nattakit. The company aims to create a legendary landmark that drives Bangkok's potential to become both a world-class metropolis and one of the world's most liveable cities, he said.

The Commerce Ministry plans to open markets and import soybeans and coconuts to maintain adequate supplies, enhance food security, and ensure benefits for Thai farmers. Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat chaired this year's first meeting of the Oilseed and Vegetable Oil Committee, which considered and approved several issues to ensure a steady and adequate supply of raw material for factories that rely on soybeans and coconuts, while still continuing to protect local farmers. He said the goal is to stabilise crop prices while also supplying sufficient raw materials for industrial uses. The panel agreed to open the market and manage imports of soybean meal for human consumption and other industrial uses, in line with Thailand's commitments under the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Agriculture and related free trade agreements (FTAs) for 2025-2027. The committee also decided to implement a three-year import management plan for soybeans (2026-2028) to support the oil extraction, animal feed production, and food processing industries. A supervisory subcommittee comprising government agencies, soybean farmers, and private sector representatives was established to oversee this process. Another goal is managing the market opening and import of soybean oil and its fractions, coconuts, desiccated coconut, and coconut oil from 2026-2028, in accordance with Thailand's commitments under the WTO Agreement on Agriculture and other FTAs. The imports will be based on domestic market demand. Mr Jatuporn said the meeting aimed to establish an effective management mechanism for oilseed and vegetable oil products, prioritising the interests of Thai farmers. He said collaboration between the public and private sectors is crucial to ensure fair pricing for farmers while securing essential raw materials for industries. The initiative aims to bolster food security, enhance national competitiveness, and promote related exports, while maintaining a sustainable balance between farmer protection and industrial needs.

Alternative crops sandbox in the offing

The Commerce Ministry is collaborating with the Agriculture Ministry to develop a sandbox project to address unsuitable rice-growing areas. This initiative is expected to concentrate on three specific types of areas: those prone to flooding, those vulnerable to drought, and areas affected by both flooding and drought. Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat said the two ministries had discussions on establishing the sandbox, with an initial survey identifying roughly 10 million rai of such land. The plan is to start with pilot areas and select suitable alternative crops for cultivation in those locations. "These crops must have strong future potential and can become product champions within five years," he said. Mr Jatuporn said the crops must be future-oriented, in high market demand and based on the concept of market-led production or producing what the market wants. The sandbox project will integrate the Agricultural Map for proactive agricultural management (Agri-Map) with the Ministry of Commerce's marketing plan (Commerce Map) and the Environmental Map, which assesses whether areas are suitable or unsuitable for rice cultivation. He said this approach will not force farmers to stop growing rice but will show through clear examples how switching to other crops in unsuitable rice-growing areas could increase their income and encourage voluntary change. The government will continue to support rice farming in suitable areas but with a focus on premium rice varieties that are in high market demand. Mr Jatuporn said the two ministries are working on developing rice strains that meet market needs and to promote their cultivation among farmers. Moreover, the government has initiated projects to reduce farmers' production costs such as chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Deputy Commerce Minister Chantawit Tantasith said in the short term, the Department of Foreign Trade is seeking export markets to ensure Thailand meets its 2025 rice export target of 7.5 million tonnes. In the first half of 2025, Thailand exported 3.73 million tonnes of rice worth 75.6 billion baht, a 27.3% year-on-year decline in volume and a 36.5% dip in value.
