Talks held with food service provider

The commerce minister has held discussions with a leading American food service provider on the subject of enhancing Thai exports to the US. A delegation from the Ministry of Commerce, led by Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat, held discussions with Nipa Kim, senior global sourcing manager of Clark Associates Inc on Sunday in New York. Mr Jatuporn said the discussions aimed to explore ways to boost Thai exports to the US. Clark Associates provides the food service industry with equipment, supplies and distribution. The discussions covered four key areas. Mr Jatuporn highlighted Thailand's potential as a production hub and emphasised the ability of Thai producers to deliver industrial products that meet international standards, particularly in sectors such as kitchen equipment, electrical appliances, and furniture. Mr Jatuporn invited the company's high-ranking executives to pay an official visit to Thailand to visit factories and to participate in business matching activities. The two parties also shared information to help Thai producers develop products to meet the demands of the US market. They held discussions on reducing trade and logistics barriers, including tariff barriers, product standards and customs procedures. Last year, Clark Associates imported Thai products valued at US$628 million and plans to increase its imports from Thailand to $1.1 billion in the future. Major imported products from Thailand include commercial freezers, refrigerators, ovens, microwave ovens, food shelving, medical gloves, food containers, glasses, wine glasses, outdoor tables and furniture. The company reports sales of over $3.2 billion annually and distributes nearly 500,000 stock keeping units of products. Its major customers include Disney, Marriott Hotel, Starbucks, Subway and Chick-fil-A.

Department of International Trade Promotion helps US grocery chain source Thai goods

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) has joined forces with leading US Asian grocery chain H Mart to expand the presence of Thai food products in the American market. This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen exports, enhance visibility of Thai brands and scale up the digital retail platform Topthai on H Mart's online channels. Speaking after meeting H Mart executives, DITP director-general Sunanta Kangvalkulkij said both parties had exchanged views on the growing demand for Thai products as H Mart plans to open three new branches this year. H Mart, the largest Asian supermarket chain in the US, has sought the DITP's support in sourcing more Thai exporters, particularly of jasmine rice, coconut water, coconut milk and tropical fruit juices. While the company raised concerns over tariffs, it remains confident the Thai government will implement support measures without affecting US retail prices. The DITP also discussed organising joint promotions through Topthai, a concept store designed to sell Thai products. Similar online Topthai stores have already been launched across more than 10 countries. From Aug 30–Sept 1 last year, the DITP and H Mart held a promotion to distribute Thai products like jasmine rice, coconut water and snacks, generating over 8.4 million baht in sales. In addition, H Mart executives have been invited to attend Thaifex–Anuga Asia 2026 to select more Thai food products for distribution and the rice product showcase in New York hosted by the International Trade Promotion Office. H Mart operates in 16 states in the US and aims to expand to 87 branches by the end of this year. The company's annual revenue is estimated at US$1.2–1.5 billion. It imports a variety of Thai goods, including seafood, frozen and canned fruits, dried fruits, jasmine rice, noodles, instant noodles, sauces, fermented fish sauce, snacks and ready-to-eat meals. Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat is in New York from July 19–22 to welcome Princess Ubolratana, who will chair an event to promote "Thai Select" restaurants by harnessing Thai soft power in the industry.

Thailand to propose zero tariffs in crucial US trade talks Wednesday (July 16)

BANGKOK: Thailand is set to make a significant offer to the United States tonight, proposing 0% import duties on tens of thousands of products in a pivotal video conference with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). The move comes as Bangkok simultaneously prepares contingency plans for potential US tariffs. Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat confirmed the breakthrough in trade negotiations Wednesday (July 16). Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Pichai Chunhavajira, will spearhead "Team Thailand" in discussions with the USTR, presenting Thailand's newly revised and expanded proposals. Beyond the substantial offer of duty-free access for a vast array of goods, the Thai delegation will put forward additional proposals designed to strengthen trade ties. Crucially, the Ministry of Commerce has already tasked relevant agencies with developing detailed relief plans. These measures are being formulated based on two key hypothetical scenarios regarding potential US tariff impositions: Scenario 1: A 36% tariff being levied. Scenario 2: A 20% tariff being levied, mirroring the rate applied to competitor Vietnam. "We've instructed our teams to identify precisely which product categories would be affected under a 36% tariff, and the extent of that impact, including on workers in various industries," Jatuporn explained. "Similarly, we're assessing which product groups would be hit by a 20% tariff and the resulting consequences." These contingency plans are reportedly complete and are now awaiting the outcome of tonight's crucial negotiations. - The Nation/ANN

Thai commerce ministry eager to boost price, exports of agricultural products

The Thai Ministry of Commerce is trying to boost prices and exports of rice and langon, along with more measures to support famers, commerce minister Jatuporn Buruspat said on Monday. The production of in-season rice is scheduled to be completed in November and December. The Ministry of Agriculture has been informed by MP Praphat Pothasuthon of Suphan Buri's Constituency 5 about falling rice prices and the struggles faced by farmers since July 9, said Mr Jatuporn. 'Rice is a major agricultural product of Thailand, and we are committed to solving these problems by cooperating with relevant agencies at all levels,' Mr Jatuporn said. He emphasised long-term relief measures for farmers and efforts to expand export markets. At present, the price of unhusked rice with 15% moisture content ranges from 6,400 to 7,400 baht per tonne. For rice with 25% moisture, the price ranges from 5,200 to 6,200 baht per tonne. Glutinous rice is priced between 10,000 and 11,000 baht per tonne, while jasmine rice with 15% moisture is selling for 15,500 to 16,300 baht per tonne. Total rice production for the 2025/26 season is expected to reach 35.28 million tonnes of paddy, an increase of 5.41% compared to the previous season. From January to May, Thailand recorded rice exports of 3.05 million tonnes worth US$1.8 billion — a 25.6% decrease from 2024, when exports were valued at US$2.6 billion. Speaking during a visit to farmers in Chiang Mai on Sunday, Mr Jatuporn said the ministry is working to export 65,000 tonnes of longans, including processed products. A business matching event was held and generated around 200 million baht in sales. In addition, longan farmers in Lamphun have already secured an unlimited export quota for Indonesia, with plans to expand into markets such as India and the United Arab Emirates, Mr Jatuporn added. For the domestic market, the ministry is collaborating with PTT Public Company, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), and other agencies to open more sales outlets during the harvest season, which runs from July to August. Activities include the organisation of the Thai Fruit Festival. Mr Jatuporn said one of the key issues raised by fruit farmers was a shortage of labour. They also called on the government to support the development of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards to boost export efficiency, including packaging for online deliveries.
