Department of International Trade Promotion helps US grocery chain source Thai goods
This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen exports, enhance visibility of Thai brands and scale up the digital retail platform Topthai on H Mart's online channels.
Speaking after meeting H Mart executives, DITP director-general Sunanta Kangvalkulkij said both parties had exchanged views on the growing demand for Thai products as H Mart plans to open three new branches this year.
H Mart, the largest Asian supermarket chain in the US, has sought the DITP's support in sourcing more Thai exporters, particularly of jasmine rice, coconut water, coconut milk and tropical fruit juices.
While the company raised concerns over tariffs, it remains confident the Thai government will implement support measures without affecting US retail prices.
The DITP also discussed organising joint promotions through Topthai, a concept store designed to sell Thai products. Similar online Topthai stores have already been launched across more than 10 countries.
From Aug 30–Sept 1 last year, the DITP and H Mart held a promotion to distribute Thai products like jasmine rice, coconut water and snacks, generating over 8.4 million baht in sales.
In addition, H Mart executives have been invited to attend Thaifex–Anuga Asia 2026 to select more Thai food products for distribution and the rice product showcase in New York hosted by the International Trade Promotion Office.
H Mart operates in 16 states in the US and aims to expand to 87 branches by the end of this year. The company's annual revenue is estimated at US$1.2–1.5 billion.
It imports a variety of Thai goods, including seafood, frozen and canned fruits, dried fruits, jasmine rice, noodles, instant noodles, sauces, fermented fish sauce, snacks and ready-to-eat meals.
Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat is in New York from July 19–22 to welcome Princess Ubolratana, who will chair an event to promote "Thai Select" restaurants by harnessing Thai soft power in the industry.

Baht falls from highest since 2022 on conflict with Cambodia
Thailand's baht fell after touching the highest in more than three years on the escalating conflict with its neighbor Cambodia. The local currency fell 0.3% to 32.29 per US dollar on Thursday after touching 32.11 earlier, the strongest since February 2022. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index slid about 1%. The baht had surged more than 6% this year on growing optimism over trade negotiations, the return of foreign stock inflows and near-record high gold prices. Thai fighter jets hit two Cambodian army posts near their disputed border on Thursday, as troops clashed in multiple locations in an escalation of tensions between the two nations. 'The escalating border conflict is giving investors a reason to book some gains after the Thai baht has appreciated,' said Lloyd Chan, currency strategist at MUFG Bank. The conflict could put a pause in baht's rally this year. Sentiment was boosted earlier after Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said on Tuesday the nation is close to an agreement with the US to lower a threatened 36% tariff on its goods ahead of the Aug 1 deadline and expects a rate closer in line with regional neighbours. The baht's gain is putting pressure on authorities to curb its strength to protect the nation's economic drivers of tourism and exports. 'Bank of Thailand will continue to watch for any excessive volatility,' said Christopher Wong, senior foreign-exchange strategist at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation in Singapore. A break of the resistance level at 32 to 32.1 baht per dollar may add more tailwind to the currency, he said. Thailand's foreign-exchange reserves climbed to a record $263 billion earlier in July, partly as officials stepped up their intervention to slow the baht's appreciation. Easing tensions between two of Thailand's largest trade partners — the United States and China — are also soothing investor worries. Global funds have poured a net $345 million into Thai equities in July, on track for the first monthly inflow in 10 months. On Wednesday alone, global funds poured in $139 million into stocks, the largest single-day inflow in 10 months. The baht is also underpinned by near-record high gold prices, given the country's status as a major trading hub for the precious metal in Asia.

Food & Hospitality Thailand event to focus on fostering quality tourism
Despite the Thai tourism slowdown, the upcoming Food & Hospitality Thailand (FHT) 2025 exhibition is expected to help operators upgrade their services to meet the target of lifting the industry to quality tourism. Sanchai Noombunnam, country general manager at Informa Markets Thailand, said this year's FHT event will be organised to cover a larger area, with an additional 10% of space compared with the 22,000 sq m utilised last year, in order to help businesses attract quality tourists by upgrading their products and services towards sustainability. "This event is intended to help tourism-related operators prepare to attract tourists in the second half of the year, especially quality tourists," said Mr Sanchai. Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, president of the Thai Hotels Association, said the industry is still experiencing the impact from the decline in Chinese arrivals. He said Chinese travellers are increasingly choosing destinations such as Japan and South Korea, drawn by competitive promotions, visa policies and better perceptions regarding safety. "Safety concerns remain a major obstacle. We need aggressive confidence-building campaigns to reassure Chinese travellers." He said long-haul markets might have consistent growth, but short-haul markets remain a critical component to sustain the tourism sector. As of July 20, Thailand welcomed 18.3 million tourists, a 5.91% decline year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Thaniwan Kulmongkol, president of the Thai Restaurant Association, said there is an ongoing oversupply of restaurants, particularly high-priced ones, and the economy is sluggish, leading to greater caution when it comes to consumer spending. She urged small and medium-sized operators to embrace technology and social media to stay competitive. "Nowadays, having delicious food alone is not enough, you have to put that deliciousness into the mobile phone too," she said, emphasising the importance of a digital presence in influencing consumer decisions. Thailand's food and beverage industry is projected to total 669 billion baht in 2025, on par with 2024. "Food remains essential, and the restaurant business still has room to thrive," Mrs Thaniwan noted. FHT 2025 will be held on Aug 20-23 in Halls 1-4 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. Over 3,000 brands from 20 countries, including food and beverages, cafes and bakeries, hospitality technology and wellness solutions will showcase their products and services.
