It Seems Like H Mart Could Be Coming to Tribeca

For the past couple of years, neighborhood blog Tribeca Citizen has been tracking progress on an H Mart location reportedly on its way to 111 Hudson Street, at North Moore Street, replacing what was another Asian grocer, Jin Market, that closed in 2022. Eater has reached out to H Mart for more information. It follows on the heels of a fleet of other new H Marts opening across the five boroughs, including a food court that debuted inside its Long Island City grocery in 2024. The family pizzeria behind one of the best slice shops has closed Mama's Pizza is closing on the Upper West Side to relocate to a new home. The longtime uptown staple was the family business and gave way to their son, Frank Tuttolomondo, opening his offshoot slice shop Mama's Too nearby — now considered one of the city's best slices. Mama's Pizza, currently located at 941 Amsterdam Avenue at West 106th Street, is pausing operations as of this week, according to ILovetheUpperWestSide. Preview a new Manhattan wine bar Beautiful Eyes, a new queer Filipino wine bar, that was listed on Eater's most anticipated openings list earlier this year, is previewing some of its future dishes at a pop-up. On Monday, June 9, the Beautiful Eyes team will cook a six-course tasting menu; there are seatings at 6 and 6:30 p.m., and a late seating at 8 and 8:30 p.m. Reservations are now live. Beautiful Eyes will open later this year at 264 Bowery, between Houston and Prince streets, on the Lower East Side. It comes from wine professional Miguel de Leon and the team behind Pinch Chinese in Soho, in a kitchen led by former pop-up chef Lj Almendras. A new Hudson Valley restaurant for your radar Taavo Somer, who owns the fancy upstate hotel Inness, has debuted Little Goat, a bakery, pantry, and all-day café, in Rhinebeck, 'that epitomizes that low-key countryside chic,' according to Vogue . I loved shopping at Costco, but the store has become so crowded that I can't find a parking spot. Aldi has been my lifesaver.

The Costco in my town has the unique appeal of being both a warehouse and an ethnic grocer. While I can count a dozen Asian markets within a five-mile radius of my house, none of them — not even my beloved HMart — can boast the inventory and ethnic diversity of my favorite membership club. While shopping at Costco, I found Japanese Suntory whiskey, custard-filled taiyakis, Taiwanese moon cakes, Chinese sausage, Philippine dried mangos, Vietnamese bottled coffee, Korean kimbap, fresh mangosteens, and my family's favorite pork dumplings. During the same shopping trip, I can also grab pupusas and birria tacos. For these reasons, as a mother who shops weekly for my household of four, Costco used to be our weekly go-to destination. But the store has become so busy that I can barely get in the door anymore. With two hangry children in the car whose patience for grocery shopping can only be coaxed with promises (or bribes) of getting to pick their own weekly snacks, I've had to rethink my grocery shopping. My local Costco has become too popular I live in Torrance, Calif., which has a large Costco. It's known to be one of the busier locations. It routinely appears on rankings and lists like the "most Asian" Costco in SoCal, simply one of the best in the state, or the most "elite" in the country. Those rankings have ultimately become both a blessing and a curse. The parking lot there has always been a chaotic mess, but lately, it's become impossible to maneuver. My last three attempts to visit have failed because I could not find a single parking spot in the lot. I had to leave completely and ended up buying none of my favorite items. I've been forced to replace my favorite Costco items with food from other stores. I've been on the hunt for Costco alternatives at Aldi I used to buy all our organic, free-range, and "natural" dairy products from Costco, especially the milk, eggs, and coffee creamer our family couldn't live without. These days, whenever I can't find a space in their parking lot, I buy the Aldi versions. Recently, the eggs at Aldi cost me less than $7. Getting my kids (and husband) to eat vegetables is an ongoing battle. I used to fight this battle by buying a giant bag of organic spinach at Costco once a week and challenging us as a family to finish before any of the leaves wilted. Now, I try to do the same with the bulk-sized organic salad mixes, also courtesy of Aldi, which costs less than $5. We don't live solely on white meat, so while I used to get our rib-eye steaks and marinated bulgogi from the butcher's section of Costco, now I get seasoned pork pastor and carne asada from Aldi for around $5 and steaks from whatever is on sale at Amazon Fresh. Admittedly, there are a few things I've had a harder time finding the dupes for. No Costco trip is complete without their iconic $5 rotisserie chicken, and this remains one of their hardest products to replace. Costco's individually wrapped bags of organic edamame also remain elusive. While I can easily find smaller bags of frozen young soybeans in any Asian grocer, none of them have the convenience and bulk of the membership warehouse I used to love but am now learning to live without. I won't give up on Costco, though. I still periodically drive into the parking lot to see if I can snag a spot. If I can't, I leave knowing I can get some of my favorite items elsewhere.

The H Mart paradox: Why the beloved Asian grocer might be OK despite Trump's trade war

On a recent weekend in April, data consultant Shane Kessler wasn't at the grocery store to panic-buy eggs, but rather to scour the tall, narrow aisles of the the H Mart in Manhattan's K Town for the viral Korean pastry known as a crungji, basically a flattened croissant. He hadn't found one yet, but his basket was filled with popular Melona ice cream, from South Korea, and two bottles of his favorite Japanese soy sauce from among the more than 100 varieties on offer. He was worried about tariffs raising the prices of his favorite goods. 'I never thought I'd be stockpiling soy sauce, but here we are,' he shrugged. 'I've come to H Mart every weekend this month.' H Mart sets opening date for Seattle's Ballard store

We now know when H Mart will open in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, the popular Asian grocery store will open on June 5. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board shows that H Mart filed an application on Feb. 21. The application lists the address as 951 Northwest Ballard Way— where the New Seasons Market used to be. H Mart currently operates several stores in Seattle. The grocer also has stores in Federal Way, Redmond, Lynwood, and Bellevue. H Mart offers a large variety of Asian cuisine such as fresh seafood, meat, and produce, as well as unique snacks that can't typically be found at traditional grocery chains.
