Thief hangs off moving train after snatching phone, jumps off as passengers beat him: WATCH

Indian Express26-07-2025
A dramatic incident aboard the Bhagalpur-Muzaffarpur Janseva Intercity Express near Bihar's Munger has gone viral after a thief, allegedly fleeing with a stolen phone, was caught on camera hanging from the footboard of a moving train before leaping off mid-journey.
The scene unfolded when the man – seen in the video wearing a torn T-shirt, a jeans, holding a shirt in his hand, and injured – snatched a passenger's phone and tried to escape. With no route to flee, he latched onto the train's footboard, desperately holding on as the train sped ahead. The video also shows passengers hurling abuses at him, and some even striking him with a belt as he dangled dangerously from the footboard.
In a desperate plea, the thief is seen warning the men attacking him that he would drag them down if they didn't back off. He eventually slips lower, and finally flings himself into bushes near the track.
The entire episode, filmed by a fellow passenger, quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage and debate. Jamalpur Railway SP Raman Chaudhary told Aaj Tak, 'We are looking into the incident and trying to identify the individual seen in the video.'
😡 pic.twitter.com/xvUymFCnoT

The video, which has garnered over five lakh views on X, has ignited a fierce conversation online. Some users expressed empathy for the man, while others condemned the soft-hearted takes.
One commenter said, 'Now people will sympathize with the thief but have you ever felt when your belongings get stolen, expensive phones, watch, money and many more not once but on a daily basis, his fate was decided.'
Another wrote, 'Koi insaan pura mahine mehnat karke 12000 ka mobile buy karta hai, aur aese log ek jhatke me chura lete hai. Jab inke ander koi manwata nahi toh inke prati bhi kisi ko koi samvedna nahi rakhni chahiye.' (When someone works hard all month to buy a phone worth Rs 12,000 and such people snatch it in a second, if they show no humanity, they deserve no sympathy either.)
However, not everyone took a hardline stance. 'Both are wrong—when someone's hard-earned money is stolen, only they know the pain. But there is a legal system for justice. No one should take the law into their own hands. In such cases, the thief's life could also be at risk,' another user said.

Acid attack victims to be a category in new compensation scheme: Sawant

Panaji: A new Goa victim compensation scheme, currently being prepared by state govt, will likely see some major changes. These include assistance to affected victims when an accused is acquitted due to lack of evidence, and a separate category for acid attack victims with enhanced compensation, said CM Pramod Sawant . State govt is preparing the scheme under Section 396 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The powers to decide the award of compensation to the victim lie with the Goa state legal services authority as per the section. The aim of the scheme is 'to provide relief/assistance to the affected victim/dependent family member in case where the victim is a deceased minor and where the offender is acquitted due to insufficient/lack of evidence,' said Sawant. Since 2016, 17 victims of sexual assault and acid attacks received Rs 63 lakh as compensation. In cases where the victim or dependent is a minor and if the victim is under the care and protection of the child welfare committee, the amount of compensation shall be kept with the state or district legal services authority in the name of the victim until the victim turns 18 and shall be released to the victim thereafter, to ensure that it is utilised by the victim, said Sawant. Currently, when a recommendation is made by a court or an application is made by a victim or their dependent to the district collector, the district collector holds an inquiry and submits his findings to govt for awarding adequate compensation. Compensation sanctioned by govt is then disbursed to the victim by the district collector. State govt started the Goa victim compensation scheme, 2012, for providing monetary compensation to victims (or their dependents) who have suffered loss or injury due to crime and require rehabilitation. Under the scheme, the maximum compensation is 10 lakh. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Court sentences drug peddler to 12 years imprisonment in Ludhiana

1 2 Ludhiana: A local court has sentenced Bobby, a 57-year-old man from this city's Old Quarter near the civil hospital, to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 1 lakh after police seized 3,000 intoxicant tablets from him. If the fine is not paid, he will face an additional year of imprisonment, the special court judge Harvinder Singh ruled. On May 28, 2020, Division Number Two police booked Bobby under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act following a police operation at Old Jail Road near the civil hospital. Assistant sub-inspector Sukhwinder Singh and other officers spotted Bobby returning on foot from Brown Road carrying a white plastic bag on his right shoulder. When he noticed the police, Bobby attempted to discard the bag, which was later found damaged, revealing red pills and blue capsules inside. Police apprehended Bobby on the spot and seized 3,000 capsules along with an additional 1,760 capsules, later. Despite attempts, no independent witnesses were available to be included in the police party at the time of recovery. Bobby was arrested and charged formally after police filed a chargesheet. During the trial, Bobby claimed he was implicated falsely and rejected all allegations of possession. However, the court found no evidence to support his defense. The judge noted that Bobby had neither claimed any enmity with the cops nor reported any false implication to higher authorities or provide the court with any private witnesses to prove his innocence. "Had the accused been innocent, he would have raised hue and cry against his false implication to the higher police officer," the court said. The evidence and testimonies confirmed Bobby's guilt, leading to his conviction and sentencing under applicable sections of the NDPS Act. Engineer duped of 8L by collegemate, 3 others on job promise

Pune: An engineer (32), who is working with a private firm in Chakan MIDC, was duped of Rs 8 lakh between Feb and Dec 2023 by his college mate, the latter's father and two others on the promise of helping him secure a job in either PCMC or PWD or Indian Navy. The engineer filed a complaint with the Sinhgad Road police on Saturday after all promises went to vain. An officer from the Sinhagad Road police said the complainant, who is currently working as a quality engineer, hails from Jalgaon district. One of the four men was his college mate during an engineering course, the office said, adding that he, however, did not complete his engineering. "The complainant told us that in Feb 2023, when he was looking for rented accommodation in the Narhe area, he met his college mate. The latter even told the complainant to stay with him in his flat at Narhe," the officer said. "The man took Rs 1.25 lakh from the complainant. When the complainant did not get the job, his friend told him to wait for some time. The accused told the complainant that his father works in a public works department in Satara and he can get him the job at PWD," he said. The officer said the complainant contacted his friend's father. The latter demanded Rs 10 lakh to secure a job as a junior engineer. The complainant's friend also gave him a bank account number, claiming that it was a PWD senior officer's bank account number. "The complainant borrowed money from his father, obtained a loan and transferred Rs 3.50 lakh," the officer said. He said the complainant again did not get the job and hence started pursuing his friend for money. "The accused then introduced a 'Navy officer' to the complainant and promised him a job in the Indian Navy through him. The victim again transferred the money and again got duped," he said. The officer said the accused threatened the victim and abused him when the latter asked his money back. "We have registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust. Our investigations are on," the officer said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
