DJ Funk, trailblazing Chicago ghetto house producer, dies aged 54
DJ Funk, the producer who coined the term 'ghetto house' and was one of the Chicago scene's key innovators, has died aged 54.
His death was confirmed by close friend and collaborator DJ Slugo, who announced the news via a post on Instagram.
The artist, whose real name was Charles Chambers, had stage four cancer and his family had launched a fundraising appeal to help pay for his funeral this week.
Chambers' productions, which he dubbed ghetto house but were also known as booty house, took house music's basic components (beats, bass and vocals) and sped them up, while adding raunchy lyrics.
Artists including DJ Assault, DJ Deeon and DJ Houzman were inspired by Miami bass and their city's house scene, releasing on Chicago labels Dance Mania (which DJ Funk eventually owned) and Pro-Jex.
Songs like Work Dat Body, Pump It and Run became dancefloor fillers across the American midwest and eventually around the world, powered by their call and response lyrics, which were often crude and overtly sexual.
The DJ Funk brand was huge in his native Chicago, while his 1999 album Booty House Anthems reportedly sold a reported 1m copies across the US, and it led to two more volumes being released.
Jeff Mills and Glasgow's Jackmaster both included DJ Funk tracks on influential mixes, while the building blocks of ghetto house evolved into the Footwork scene that is still thriving in Chicago.
When asked how he had sustained such a long career, Chambers said: 'Not giving up, doing my thing. One thing I got mad at a lot of artists for is that they would make a genre or sound, and then they wouldn't do it no more, they went super pop and sold their souls to the devil. I think that you need to keep doing whatever you are doing.'
The French duo Daft Punk mentioned DJ Funk in their track Teachers, from their debut album Homework, in which they list all the producers who had influenced their sound. The French connection continued when Justice asked DJ Funk to remix Let There Be Light in 2013.
Speaking to the Guardian in 2015, DJ Funk discussed how he'd like to be commemorated. 'I really don't want a funeral,' he said. 'I'd like to have a party so people remember all the good times and aren't sad. Then at the afterparty there'll be a lot of booty shaking with all my music played.'

The media personality recently travelled to Poland with Unicef to see how Soccer Aid donations have directly supported Ukrainian families who were forced to flee their homes. The 39-year-old said she could not 'imagine' what Ukrainian refugee families must be going through, emphasising how important it is to stand with them. 'I couldn't imagine what was going through their heads… the emotions.' While in Krakow she visited the Spilno Hub, which helps families find accommodation and offers access to a range of services such as psychosocial support and legal assistance. The Unicef-run centre has helped people such as Yuliia Karpenko, her sister Olisia and Yuliia's four-year-old daughter Anastasiia 'Nastia' who were forced to flee Ukraine with just one bag on an evacuation train. She said: 'Hearing about the lasting effect the war in Ukraine has had on Yuliia and her family will stay with me for a long time. 'Her determination to create a safe and supportive community for her family in Poland really shone through. 'Thanks to Unicef, she's been able to meet other mums, learn Polish and find work in a kitchen. 'And her daughter, Nastia, has been able to make friends with other children and spend time playing, just as any four-year-old should. 'It supports families who've fled the war in Ukraine in so many ways. 'It's a very special place.' During the trip, Rooney visited the Education Rehabilitation Centre, a specialist school funded by the children's organisation which supports young people with disabilities. There she met a young autistic boy, Murat, who could not talk when they first left Ukraine and has since been able to say a few words. She said: 'It's such a calming place and the teachers there are so supportive and caring. 'When they left Ukraine he wasn't able to talk but he's now started to say some words and can communicate with other children too. Donations made to Soccer Aid for Unicef will be doubled this year up to £5 million thanks to the Children's Investment Fund Foundation. Rooney said: 'As a mum myself, I couldn't help but think of my own boys when I met children like Nastia and Murat. 'Seeing them smile and play despite everything they've been through was incredibly moving. 'Hearing their stories really reminded me how important it is that we stand with families who've been through so much, every child deserves a safe space to play – as a parent this is all you want for your child.' The singer was in Amsterdam to kick off his Breezy Bowl XX tour, which is celebrating 20 years of his career. His Amsterdam gig comes after he was arrested in the UK last month. His arrest came after he was accused of using a bottle to cause bodily harm to music producer Abe Diaw during a night out at London's Tape nightclub in Mayfair on February 19, 2023. On May 15 this year, Brown was arrested at the Lowry Hotel in Salford. He had recently jetted into nearby Manchester Airport to rehearse for his upcoming Breezy Bowl XX 20th anniversary tour. The singer has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm. He was initially denied bail and is expected to appear in person at Southwark Crown Court next month. District Judge Joanna Hirst told the court that the charge was too serious to be dealt with at the magistrates ' court. However, the 36-year-old star was later granted bail following a court plea. He was ordered to pay a £5 million security fee to the court. The financial guarantee is to ensure a defendant returns to court and may be forfeited if they breach bail conditions. His lawyer, Grace Forbes, had argued that he was a public figure known worldwide as they pleaded for bail to be granted. As well as his Amsterdam performance, Brown is scheduled to perform in cities across the UK, including Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, London and Cardiff. Despite his arrest, Brown's bail conditions enable him to continue with his scheduled international tour this year, including in the UK later this month and July. Following his release on bail, the American singer took to Instagram to tell his 144million followers: "From the cage to the stage!!! Breezybowl." Brown's bold post was seemingly in reference to the fact his bail conditions allow him to honour his tour commitments and perform across Europe ahead of his court date next month.
