BJP asks CM to apologise for linking COVID vaccines with heart attacks as expert panel rejects claim

The Print14 hours ago
The BJP said the Chief Minister must issue an unconditional apology for making what it called a 'baseless allegation.' Calling Siddaramaiah's remarks 'irresponsible,' Union Minister Pralhad Joshi pointed out that premier national institutions including the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and AIIMS-Delhi have all clarified that there is no scientific evidence linking COVID-19 vaccines to heart attacks.
A panel constituted by the government concluded that there is no single cause behind the observed increase in sudden cardiac deaths. Rather, it described the phenomenon as multifactorial, with behavioural, genetic, and environmental risk factors contributing.
Bengaluru, Jul 6 (PTI) BJP on Sunday demanded an apology from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for attributing a spate of cardiac arrests in Karnataka—particularly in Hassan district—to COVID-19 vaccination, after an expert panel found no evidence to support the claim.
'Siddaramaiah is deliberately making such statements because the vaccine was developed during Prime Minister Modi's tenure,' Joshi said in Hubballi. 'They assumed the pandemic would politically damage the Prime Minister—people would suffer and turn against him. But PM Modi handled COVID with sensitivity and care.' Joshi said that because the Prime Minister was widely credited with managing the pandemic effectively, the opposition was resorting to unfounded claims.
'After ICMR, NCDC and AIIMS refuted any link between vaccines and cardiac events, now the Karnataka government's own Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology—a reputed institution not just in the state but across India—has also found no correlation,' Joshi said.
He noted that the committee, led by Dr. Ravindranath, Director of the Jayadeva Institute, was set up by Siddaramaiah himself to examine any possible link between COVID vaccination and cardiac deaths. 'The panel has clearly stated that COVID vaccines are not the cause of heart attacks. Will Siddaramaiah apologise now? I strongly condemn his statement,' Joshi added.
BJP spokesperson Dr CN Ashwath Narayan also criticised Siddaramaiah, alleging that his statement was aimed at discrediting Indian-made vaccines and undermining the Prime Minister.
'He questioned the efficacy of a vaccine that saved millions of lives, without citing any scientific basis. Chief minister should apologise to the people of the state for spreading misinformation,' Narayan said.
The observational study conducted at Jayadeva Institute found no association between premature cardiovascular disease and prior COVID-19 infection or vaccination.
'Most global studies and reports did not find any causal link between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden cardiac events. On the contrary, vaccination has been shown to offer long-term protection against cardiac issues,' the panel noted.
Recently, Siddaramaiah had suggested that a spate of heart attack deaths in Hassan district could be linked to the COVID-19 vaccination drive. He had also claimed that the vaccines were 'hastily' approved.
His comments drew strong criticism from Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. PTI GMS ADB

"Lot of poison in BJP's mind for Maharashtra": Aaditya Thackeray

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 6 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for comparing the Pahalgam terror attack to incidents of violence in Maharashtra amid the ongoing language controversy, and said that the ruling party holds 'a lot of poison' in its mind towards the state. He further questioned the ruling BJP in the centre over the delay in arresting the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack. 'There is a lot of poison in the BJP's mind when it comes to Maharashtra. Today, the BJP has compared Maharashtra to the terrorists in the Pahalgam incident - the terrorists whom the BJP could not catch or stop. It has been three months since the Pahalgam incident, but where did those terrorists go? Nobody knows if they fled to Pakistan or joined the BJP. But comparing them to Maharashtra shows the malice and poison that the BJP has for the state,' Thackeray told reporters here. Amid the political sparring over Hindi imposition charge by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar on Sunday compared the agony of the Pahalgam terror attack, where Hindus were killed in the name of religion, and those getting 'beaten up' in the name of language. He said that these incidents were distressing for him. 'All these incidents cause pain, suffering, and mental distress. In Pahalgam, they shot them after asking about their religion. And here, they beat up the innocent Hindus just because of the language they speak. Such cases create a disturbance,' Shelar said. His remarks come after some incidents of violence and vandalism were reported in the state amid the ongoing Hindi-Marathi controversy. Five workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were arrested in connection with the vandalism at entrepreneur Sushil Kedia's office in Worli, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered against them under Sections 223, 189(2), 189(3), 190, 191(2), 191(3), and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Kedia, who found himself in the middle of the language row in Maharashtra over his recent remarks against MNS and its chief Raj Thackeray, stated that he made these comments in haste and has now realised his mistake. In another incident, as per a viral video, a group of men allegedly associated with a regional party beat up a shop owner for not speaking in Marathi. The incident occurred in the Mira-Bhayandar area near Mumbai. On Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned of strict legal action against those engaging in 'hooliganism' in the name of Marathi. He said that the Mahayuti government will not tolerate violence against commoners. Although the Maharashtra government withdrew its April 16 orders on the implementation of the three-language policy that made Hindi a 'mandatory' third language for school students in Classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools, the political controversy over the same has brought together long-time estranged Thackeray cousins after nearly two decades. Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Saturday shared the stage together at the Worli Dome in Mumbai as they held a joint rally in protest against the 'Hindi imposition'. Modi calls on BRICS nations to condemn terrorism

The summit declaration denounced the recent terrorist attack in Kashmir that triggered a military escalation between India and Pakistan Terrorism has become the "most serious challenge" for humanity, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while addressing the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday. He called on the group to condemn terrorism and show no hesitation in sanctioning terrorists. Referring to the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, in which 26 people lost their lives, Modi described it as a "direct attack on the soul, identity, and dignity of India." "This attack was a blow not only to India but to all of humanity," he said, thanking the friendly countries "who stood with us, who expressed support and condolences." "Condemning terrorism should be our 'principle,' not just a 'convenience,'" Modi emphasized. "For personal or political gain, giving silent consent to terrorism - supporting terror or terrorists - should not be acceptable under any circumstances." The BRICS leaders on Sunday condemned the Pahalgam attack and echoed India's position on adopting a "zero tolerance" approach toward terrorism and rejecting double standards in countering it. "We reaffirm our commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing, and safe havens. We urge the adoption of zero tolerance for terrorism and reject double standards in countering it," the declaration stated. The document also welcomed ongoing counter-terrorism cooperation among BRICS nations. India has previously blamed Pakistan for supporting cross-border terrorism and has linked the Pahalgam attack to Islamabad, triggering an unprecedented diplomatic and military standoff in May this year. Pakistan has denied the allegations, claiming it is itself a "victim of terrorism." Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asifadmittedthat Islamabad had done "the dirty work" for Western powers - particularly the US and the UK - by training and arming terrorists for three decades. He added, however, that this "was a mistake" and that Pakistan has "suffered for that." While addressing the summit's opening session, Modi also stressed the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in global institutions to address the marginalization of the Global South. "The Global South has often faced double standards. Whether it's about development, the distribution of resources, or security-related matters, the interests of the Global South have not been given due importance. On topics like climate finance, sustainable development, and technology access, the Global South has often received nothing more than token gestures," he stated. India is set to host the next BRICS summit in 2026, according to the joint statement. (
