Support hubs to the core: GCCs take lead in business outcomes, leadership
The North Carolina-headquartered Lowe's is not the only one witnessing a shift in the operations and relevance of global capability centres (GCC).
Navneet Kapoor of Maersk joined the Danish shipping company as the head of its shared services centre in India before taking on the role of an executive vice president and chief technology and transformation officer (CTIO). And, Ashish Grover, chief information officer of Chilean retailer Falabella, was the managing director of the company's India technology centre before taking over the larger role in 2021 and relocating to Santiago.
Lalit Ahuja, co-founder and chief executive officer of ANSR, which helps multinationals set up GCCs in India, explained the phenomenon. GCCs have morphed into the main enterprises, become contextually empowered, driving business outcomes and no longer viewed as cost centres unlike a decade ago, Ahuja said. As the centres matured, so did the senior executives who have emerged as enterprise leaders, he added.
In fact, India's GCCs are rapidly evolving from support hubs into strategic nerve centres, shaping the next generation of enterprise leaders. As they take on critical roles in operations, lead large-scale projects, and drive decision-making for their parent organisations, GCCs are producing CXO-level talent with increasing frequency.
With a strong focus on advanced technologies—AI, machine learning, and GenAI—GCCs have become the proving ground for global CIOs and CTOs. And the transformation from cost centres to core enterprise engines is underway, executives and analysts pointed out. That has resulted in GCC site leaders being elevated to roles such as global chief information officers and chief technology officers even as they continue to be based, in many cases, out of India. It indicates how vital these centres have become to the parent company's operations, according to people tracking this segment.
'One of my advantages was that I started as the chief technology officer for the e-commerce division which was a global role,'' said Grover, CIO of Falabella. ''I was also the MD which meant setting up the India technology operations. That means being on the ground and getting to know the broader domain of the company and being exposed to the bigger picture,' he said.
Since Grover was heading the e-commerce division, he tried to build a strong impactful team in India and Chile, working across cultures that he says put him in good stead now when he works from the headquarters.
Mittal of Lowe's shared his experience to emphasise the empowering of GCCs and its executives. 'Prior to the pandemic, we did not have self-check-out at many stores though it still contributed to 25 per cent of the transactions. We built a team in India to focus on this, started with small proof of concepts and eventually got rolled out to all stores currently. That now makes up about 65 per cent of the transactions with an error rate of a tenth of what it was previously.'

Ramco Cements unveils Hard Worker range of construction chemical products
Chennai-headquartered Ramco Cements, which is eyeing a significant share in the construction chemicals segment, has unveiled a new product line branded Hard Worker. The range features 20 specialised products that include tile adhesives, waterproofing solutions, bonding agents, and repair mortars. 'Hard Worker is already available in Southern and Eastern states. In the next two to three years, Hard Worker will be a pan-India brand, and in four to five years, it will help us achieve our goal of ₹2,000 crore,' said A.V. Dharmakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer of The Ramco Cements Limited. To a query on investments that had gone into bringing out Hard Worker, he replied that ₹400 crore had been pumped into the business. The company is leveraging its existing cement distribution network and ramping up brand promotion to reach new customers, he added. Revenue from the construction chemicals division of Ramco Cement was ₹210 crore in FY2025 and the firm said it intends to scale this up to ₹2,000 crore in the next four to five years. Abinav Raja, Director at Ramco Group, said the packaging is distinctive, having been designed with inspiration drawn directly from the market. M. Srinivasan, Executive Director – Operations, Ramco Cements, mentioned that the entire production was done in-house and this set the brand apart from other players in the industry. 'We have launched 20 products today and another 20 products are coming soon,' he added. Mr. Dharmakrishnan also highlighted that the company, which began with a 200 TPD unit, has now grown to become the fifth-largest producer with a capacity of 24 million TPA. By March–June 2026, this capacity is expected to reach around 30 million tonnes. The Indian construction chemicals market is on a fast growth trajectory, projected to reach ₹ 40,000 crore by 2030, driven by rapid urbanisation, infrastructure expansion, and increasing demand for durable, high-performance building materials.

Delhi to phase out CNG buses by August 2031; electric fleet expansion underway: Govt
Delhi is set to retire its entire fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses by August 2031, with only electric buses being added to the city's public transport system, the government informed Parliament on Monday, according to a report by TNN. Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, citing details shared by the Delhi government, told the Rajya Sabha that the transition plan covers both Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Cluster buses. Delhi currently operates 5,691 buses, including electric ones. Of these, 3,203 are run by the transport department, while 2,488 belong to private operators under the Cluster scheme. 'The Government of NCT of Delhi has reported that the ratio of buses to be provided by DTC and private Clusters should be 50:50 of a total fleet of 11,000 buses,' Sahu said. Out of the total fleet, 2,743 are CNG buses — 993 under DTC and 1,750 under Cluster operators. These will be phased out in a staggered manner by August 2031. According to the minister's written reply, all CNG buses older than 10 years will be retired by 2026-27 in the case of DTC, while private Cluster CNG buses will be phased out entirely by 2031. Notably, most of DTC's low-floor CNG buses were procured ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Sahu added that all new Cluster buses are being inducted under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model. Over the past five years, neither the Centre nor the Delhi government has allocated funds to DTC for the purchase of new CNG buses, underscoring the shift towards electric mobility. The move is part of the capital's broader clean mobility push, with the government targeting a fully electric fleet in public transport within the next decade.>

Amphenol to buy Trexon in $1 bn deal to boost defense business
NEW DELHI: US-based electronics gear maker Amphenol is buying cable assembly firm Trexon for $1 billion in cash, to capture business opportunities in the defense market amid a rise in military spending . The Boston, Massachusetts-headquartered Trexon manufactures high-reliability interconnect and cable assemblies for industries ranging from military and defense to medical and quantum computing . 'Trexon's unique portfolio of high-reliability cable assembly products will be highly complementary to our existing offerings in the defense market,' said Amphenol President and Chief Executive Officer, R Adam Norwitt, in a joint statement Monday. The buyout announcement comes just weeks after Amphenol agreed to acquire its domestic rival CommScope 's connectivity and cable solutions unit in a $10.5 billion deal, aiming to capitalise on the surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI)-driven applications and data center infrastructure. Trexon, with facilities in the US and the UK, expects sales of $290 million in 2025 and an EBITDA of 26%. The transaction is subject to certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Amphenol will finance the transaction with cash on hand and expects to close in the fourth quarter of 2025. Amphenol manufactures electronic and fiber optic connectors and interconnect systems, antennas, sensor-based products, and coaxial and high-speed specialty cable.
