Strengthen BSF on Bangladesh border: Assam Congress to Amit Shah
Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the 126-member State Assembly, expressed concern over the pushback operations by the Assam police since May.

'While the State government has repeatedly acknowledged the deportation of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals, the situation raises serious questions about the effectiveness of existing border management frameworks and coordination between agencies,' he wrote in a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday (August 16, 2025).
Mr. Saikia said the Assam Government announced the new pushback strategy on May 10, reportedly sending more than 300 Bangladeshi nationals who entered the country illegally back by August 3.
'These recurring operations, despite the deployment of the Border Security Force (BSF) along the 267.5 km stretch of the Assam-Bangladesh border, suggest that infiltration continues to be a serious challenge,' he wrote.
He sought an assessment of the effectiveness of BSF deployment and resource allocation in a difficult terrain, reducing the gap in coordination between Central and State agencies as evident from the involvement of the Assam police in direct pushback, and addressing possible legal and diplomatic complications arising from State-level pushback conducted without the processes through the Foreigners Tribunals.
Mr. Saikia advised Mr. Shah to strengthen the BSF, increase coordination protocols among security agencies, utilise technology-driven border surveillance systems more effectively, and engage with Bangladesh proactively to address the root causes of infiltration.
The Congress leader submitted the letter hours after the Assam police pushed back 21 Bangladeshi nationals, including women, who entered the Sribhumi district illegally.
The political parties and NGOs also drew the attention of the Centre to the attacks by alleged Naga miscreants on three Assamese youths near the Assam-Nagaland border on August 15. The incident happened near the Merapani area of eastern Assam's Golaghat district.
The three youths — Simsat Basumatary, Subrata Nayak, and Prakash Boro — were attacked while returning from a picnic spot across the border in Nagaland. One of the three sustained a gunshot wound.
Officials in the Golaghat district said three suspects were arrested by the Nagaland Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel in a joint operation.

1,345 claims, objections filed by individual electors disposed in Bihar: ECI
New Delhi: With 14 more days left for filing claims and objections, the office of the Bihar Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has disposed of 1,348 applications received directly from electors for inclusion or exclusion of names in the Bihar draft voter list, an official said on Monday. The election office, including the team of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), has so far received 45,616 claims and objections directly from electors concerning Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, said an ECI bulletin. It stated that, according to the rules, claims and objections are disposed of by the ERO/AERO concerned seven days after the verification of eligibility documents has expired. Even after 18 days of the publication of electoral draft rolls, none of the political parties has filed any complaint, the poll panel said. The ECI said that in Bihar, since August 1, as many as 1,52,651 new electors, who have turned 18 after the SIR exercise, have filed forms for inclusion in the voter list. The SIR exercise in Bihar has been attacked by the Opposition parties over alleged irregularities, which they allege threaten to deprive lakhs of voters of their right to vote - a charge denied by the ECI. The poll panel published its draft electoral rolls on August 1 and has kept a window of one month for people, political parties and their 1,60,813 lakh booth-level agents (BLAs) to bring their complaints and grievances regarding inclusion or exclusion from the draft electoral list. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has 47,506 BLAs, the Congress has 17,549, and the Left has over 2,000, all adding up to over 67,000. The ECI has been routinely reaching out to political parties to join the revision exercise and bring to its notice instances of disenfranchisement, if any. 'Submit your claims and objections to rectify any errors in the draft Electoral Roll of Bihar published on August 1. So far, not even a single claim or objection has been submitted by any political party,' the EC said in a statement. The ECI highlighted that between June 23 and July 25, the Congress increased its BLAs to 17,549 (an increase of 105 per cent), RJD to 47,506 (an increase of 1 per cent), Janata Dal (United) to 36,550 (an increase of 31 per cent) and BJP to 53,338 (an increase by 3 per cent). The ECI concluded the enumeration phase of the SIR from June 24 to July 25. More than 7.24 crore electors -- out of a total of 7.89 crore -- submitted their enumeration forms during the exercise. At the end, about 65 lakh voters were found to be missing from the draft electoral rolls published on August 1. These included 22 lakh deceased electors (2.83 per cent), 36 lakh (4.59 per cent) who had permanently shifted or not found and seven lakh (0.89 per cent) who had enrolled at more than one place, ECI data showed.

A day after social activist Anna Hazare reacted angrily to the banners in Pune that urged him to 'wake up' and lead an agitation against 'vote theft', the Congress Monday asked him to speak up and 'follow the path of truth'. 'Anna's silence is not appropriate. Even though vote theft is a big issue in the nation, he is not speaking up. If Anna says he has become old and youths should speak up, then we want to tell him that the question is not about age. He should tell us whether he was part of the conspiracy to bring the BJP to power, part of the conspiracy to defame the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government,' said Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe. Hazare, 88, rose to national prominence during the 2011 anti-corruption movement, which aimed to establish a strong Jan Lokpal Bill for investigating corruption in governments. He led large-scale protests and conducted hunger strikes to demand the passage of this law at a time when the UPA government, led by the Congress party, was facing multiple corruption allegations. 'Are you the supporter of this government and therefore you are not coming forward and speaking about the blatant vote theft that happened across the country?' asked Londhe, referring to Hazare's silence in the wake of the bogus voting claims made by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi targetting the ruling BJP and the Election Commission of India. Telangana CM to hand over Indiramma House keys to beneficiaries on August 21 in Bhadradri dist
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will lead the ceremony of handing over keys to the beneficiaries of Indiramma Houses in Telangana at a programme to be held at Bendalampadu village in Chundrugonda mandal of Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Thursday (August 21, 2025). Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, who described this as a historic event, said the Chief Minister will hand over keys and personally perform the gruhapravesam for 27 houses in the village. Of the 312 houses sanctioned in Bendalampadu, 72 have already been completed. 'A long-cherished dream of the poor is set to become reality,' he said while reviewing the arrangements along with district collector Jitesh V. Patil, superintendent of police Rohit Raju, and MLAs from surrounding constituencies. He alleged that poor families were denied homes in the ten years rule of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), but the Congress government had revived the Indiramma scheme under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, and sanctioned 4.5 lakh houses across the State in the first phase. 'So far, construction of nearly 2.5 lakh houses is at various stages, with an expenditure of ₹22,500 crore. The remaining houses are being allotted transparently through Indiramma Committees. Unlike the past, this government is providing houses irrespective of party, caste, or religion,' the Minister said. Mr. Srinivas Reddy said that the housing scheme was earlier launched in the presence of Lord Sri Rama at Bhadrachalam, and now once again, house-warming would be held on Bhadradri soil. According to the district administration, the Chief Minister would reach Chundrugonda by 2 p.m. on August 21 and proceed to Bendalampadu. He will participate in pooja ceremonies at the beneficiaries' homes and interact with families for about 15 minutes each. He will address a massive public meeting at 3 p.m.
