Central Travancore politics dives into floodwaters as local body polls loom
Environmental issues have surged to the centre of the political discourse as parties crank up their campaign machinery. The Kerala Congress(M), for instance, has sprung into action with a symposium on the recurring floods in the Meenachil river.
Addressing the event, KC(M) Chairman Jose K. Mani called for a complete overhaul in water management strategies, urging the State to adopt long-term flood-control plans. 'River and stream storage capacities must be maximised. Check-dams should follow a seasonal protocol. Desilting and waste removal from waterbodies are crucial, and excess river sand must be auctioned,' he said.
The party plans to compile the recommendations that came up in the symposium and present them to the State government. Interestingly, the KC(M) itself holds the State's Water Resources portfolio, with Roshy Augustine at the helm.
The rival faction led by P.J. Joseph, on the other hand, is launching a protest campaign anchored on Vembanad Lake, which serves as the lifeline for the flood-prone Kuttanad and upper Kuttanad regions.
Charging that neglect and government inaction have brought the lake to the brink, the first phase of its protest kicks off on Saturday, June 28, on the banks of Vembanad near the Vaikom boat jetty .
'Silt, mud, and garbage have choked Vembanad Lake, drastically cutting its storage capacity. Frequent floods and crop destruction have become the norm. The State and Centre have ignored the Swaminathan commission's recommendations. Even the much-hyped Kuttanad Package remains a paper promise,' the party said, in a statement.
It is demanding immediate, targeted action: restore the lake, revive dying waterbodies such as the Kariyar and Thottappally, safeguard paddy fields, and rollout special flood-relief projects across Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Pathanamthitta.

Gadwal: The Central Government must enact and implement a law in Parliament ensuring 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs), demanded CPM District Secretary A. Venkataswamy. Responding to the call given by the State Committee, the CPM organized a dharna at the Old Bus Stand in the district headquarters on Saturday, demanding that a law for 42% BC reservations be enacted immediately and included in the Ninth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Speaking on the occasion, Venkataswamy said that the Telangana State Government had already passed a resolution in the Legislative Assembly and sent it to the Centre for approval of 42% BC reservations. However, the Centre is allegedly betraying BCs by failing to pass such a law in Parliament, and instead trying to communalize the issue. He criticized the BJP for sidelining the key constitutional purpose of reservations—ensuring economic, political, and social equality for backward classes—and for denying equality in education, employment, and livelihood opportunities. Venkataswamy alleged that the BJP wants to push BC reservations aside while it continues to implement similar reservations in BJP-ruled states without objections. He accused the BJP of attempting to divide people in Telangana along religious lines by limiting reservations to a religious narrative. He demanded a constitutional amendment to include BC reservations in the Ninth Schedule for legal protection. Condemning divisive and hate politics, he stated that the people of Telangana—the birthplace of armed peasant struggles—would never accept such politics. He also accused BJP leaders in the state of irresponsibly encouraging communal hatred and demanded that they immediately withdraw their statements. He criticized the Congress Party as well, stating that it appears to lack sincerity on the reservations issue. He said while the CPM is fighting to pressure the Centre for BC reservations, its leaders are being illegally arrested and detained across the state. He urged the Congress to wage uncompromising struggles against the Centre, uniting all parties for the cause. He reaffirmed that the fight for BC reservations would never be compromised. Other Leaders' Statements All-Party Committee President Nagar Doddi Venkataramulu and senior advocate Madhusudhan Babu also addressed the gathering, urging the Centre to abandon its stubborn stance and immediately pass the law for 42% BC reservations. They accused the Central Government of conspiring to weaken the limited support extended to the poor and marginalized through reservations, and called on people to oppose such moves unanimously. They also criticized the BJP for ignoring the nationwide demand for a caste census and adopting a delaying attitude, insisting that the party must be taught a lesson through public struggles. They expressed full support for the CPM's ongoing agitation in this regard. Vande Bharat from Jeypore to capital city soon: Majhi
1 2 Jeypore: In a significant boost to southern Odisha's connectivity, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced that a Vande Bharat Express will soon operate between Jeypore and Bhubaneswar. The move fulfils a long-standing demand of Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, who has repeatedly raised the proposal in the assembly and through formal representations to both the Centre and state. The MLA has argued that a high-speed rail link to the state capital would unlock the economic and tourism potential of Koraput district, improve market access for local produce, and provide faster travel for students and patients. Speaking at the state-level function for Subhadra Yojana, Majhi said he had discussed the matter with Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and assured that the service would commence soon. "I have taken the responsibility for introducing a Vande Bharat train from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar, and I assure you that it will be a reality soon," said Majhi. "We are thankful to the chief minister for his assurance for the introduction of a Vande Bharat train from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar as there is urgent need for faster and more efficient transportation to integrate the remote regions of southern Odisha with the state capital," said Bahinipati. Implement 42% BC quota in local body polls: Krishnaiah
National BC Welfare Association president and MP (Rajya Sabha) R. Krishnaiah has demanded that the State government should go ahead with local body polls only after implementing 42% BC reservations. He also slammed the Congress government, alleging that it is attempting to shift its responsibility by blaming the Central government led by the BJP. In a statement, Mr. Krishnaiah stated that 18 BC associations had met and decided to urge the State government to implement 42% reservations for BCs in local bodies by issuing a GO immediately. 'The Congress government cannot escape from its promise to implement the reservations by just blaming the Centre,' he said, adding that the government should hold the local body polls by implementing the promised reservations for BCs to prove its sincerity to towards the welfare of BCs. He also advised the State government against confrontation with the Centre with regard to the BC reservations. Mr. Krishnaiah also observed that the State government could even win the case if someone went to court against implementing BC reservations. 'The Constitution allows State governments to have the authority to decide local body reservations, which means the current Congress-led government could implement the reservations without any legal issues,' he said. Krishnaiah said that the BC associations can file a petition for a writ of mandamus in the Supreme Court to ensure that the government implements the reservations.
