Pankaj Tripathi On Comparisons With Irrfan Khan In 'Metro In Dino': 'This Should Never Happen'

News185 hours ago
Pankaj Tripathi says comparisons with Irrfan Khan for his role in Metro In Dino are unfair and unnecessary.
With Metro… In Dino hitting theatres on July 4, actor Pankaj Tripathi has addressed the inevitable comparisons with the late Irrfan Khan. The film, touted as a spiritual sequel to Life In A… Metro (2007), sees Pankaj stepping into the shoes of a character reminiscent of Irrfan's iconic Monty, a quirky, emotionally layered man navigating the complexities of modern relationships.
Irrfan, paired with Konkona Sensharma in the original, left an indelible mark as Monty, and in Metro… In Dino, it's again Konkona alongside Pankaj portraying a married couple going through a midlife crisis. Naturally, the film has evoked memories of Irrfan's effortless screen presence, and Pankaj's restrained humour and depth have drawn parallels from audiences and critics alike.
In a recent interview with Zoom, Pankaj Tripathi made it clear that such comparisons are misplaced. 'Yeh comparison bilkul nahi hona chahiye. Voh mere senior the aur main unka fan rahunga. Mere drama school ke senior the voh. Hum ek hi acting institute se seekhe hai. Main khud unke craft ko dekhke seekhta tha. Voh Irrfan sir hai, unki jagah hum sabke dilon mein hai," he said. (Translation: Such comparison should never happen. He was my senior and I will always be his fan. We passed out of the same drama school; I learnt so much just by observing his craft. He is Irrfan sir and will always have a place in our hearts.)
Directed by Anurag Basu, Metro… In Dino features an ensemble cast including Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Ali Fazal. The film explores love and longing in the backdrop of the city and has been praised for its mature storytelling, soulful music by Pritam, and sincere performances.
An excerpt from News18's review reads, 'Metro In Dino is a masterclass on modern-day love. It's for the lonely, for the ones who won in love and then lost some. Rush to the cinemas now!"

'Metro… In Dino' box office collections day 1: Anurag Basu's film starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan and more off to a decent start, earns Rs 3.35 crore on Friday

The much-anticipated Anurag Basu film 'Metro… In Dino', starring Pankaj Tripathi , Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan , Fatima Ali Sheikh, and others, opened in cinemas on Friday, July 4, and has reported a respectable start. Metro…In Dino Movie Review According to early estimates by Sacnilk, the film collected ₹3.35 crore on its opening day at the domestic box office. Evening shows added to day 1 numbers While the film had a modest turnout in morning and afternoon shows, it picked up a significant pace by evening and night. The Hindi-language drama recorded an overall occupancy of 17.99% on its first day, with night shows leading the surge at 31.09%. Evening shows contributed strongly as well, helping the film close the day with decent figures for a non-action, dialogue-driven ensemble film. The film seems to be connecting with urban audiences, especially those in the metro cities who are drawn to slice-of-life narratives. The cast, which includes Sara Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma , and Ali Fazal, adds to its multi-generational appeal. Metro Cities Respond Well Mumbai and the National Capital Region showed healthy numbers, with occupancy crossing 19% in both areas. Pune performed slightly better, clocking in at 20%, while Bengaluru led the chart with an impressive 36% average occupancy across shows—especially strong during evening and night slots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 3 minutes, if you own a mouse Undo The film played on over 1,200 screens nationwide, with the majority of footfall coming from multiplexes in Tier 1 cities. The music, composed by Pritam, has also played a key role in attracting footfall, especially with the title track already trending. What's next? The real test for 'Metro… In Dino' begins now. While the Day 1 number is solid for its genre, sustained growth over the weekend will determine its box office trajectory. With positive word-of-mouth and minimal competition this week, the film stands a fair chance to grow. ETimes review for the film reads, "Despite being largely pleasant, some tracks don't quite add up, feel uneven and don't know where to end. After an engaging build up, the second half feels a tad stretched. You also wish the story scratched the surface a little more, especially for Konkona-Neena Gupta track, where the actors have the potential and gravitas to dig deeper. There has been a scarcity of love stories in Bollywood and Metro In Dino, elevated by some fine performances, fills that gap perfectly. It is a breezy, intimate watch tailor-made for a rainy day."
