BBC scientist confirms tarantulas inhabit parts of UK during spider season
And now we've officially entered spider season, you might catch a glimpse of one.
The purseweb spider is Britain's only tarantula and a member of the family that contains these 'tropical giants'.
Although the word 'tarantula' still strikes fear into hearts, you needn't worry.

According to Adele Brand, a wildlife researcher at BBC's Countryfile, the purseweb is a stay-at-home spider.
It spends most of its life inside that silken tube, which has been compared to an old purse and a dirty sock—hence its name.
The whole structure can be up to 25cm long but only a small part protrudes above the soil surface.
The Missouri Department of Conservation says: "Purseweb spiders have large, imposing chelicerae, and like nearly all other spiders, they possess venom to subdue their prey and can potentially bite a human if mishandled.
"But purseweb spider bites do not pose a danger to people, except for the rare cases of people who are highly sensitive to spider bites."

While much smaller than a true tarantula, it has some of their characteristics and still looks distinctively 'different' from our other British spiders with its heavy-set legs and large 'fangs' (properly called chelicerae).
The spider operates these like parallel daggers, rather than the pincer-like movement of other British species.
The body of a purseweb ranges from 1 to 3.8cm
Sightings are possible in the North and South Downs, New Forest and other south-eastern sites, but a few are found as far north as Cumbria and south-western Scotland.

King Charles' annual swan census begins on the River Thames
LONDON (AP) — Scarlet uniforms flashed against the riverbank. Wooden skiffs glided in formation. A young swan, gently lifted from the water, was measured, inspected and released. The annual five-day census of swans belonging to King Charles III – known as Swan Upping — began Monday on the River Thames to assess their health. One of the British monarch's less-known titles is Seigneur of the Swans — Lord of the Swans — and according to ancient lore, he or she owns all members of the mute swan species found in Britain's open waters. Every year, a team of carefully selected oarsmen — Swan Uppers — are tasked with finding the swans on a stretch of the Thames. When a family is spotted, they shout, 'All up!' and the boats quickly surround the birds, marking them and checking for signs of disease or injury. 'It gives us an indication of what's going on throughout the country,' said David Barber, who wears a scarlet jacket and a white swan feather in his cap and bears the title of King's Swan Marker. 'It's a tradition, but I think it's serving a very useful purpose as well.' Barber has been leading the event for more than 30 years. He is accompanied by a vet and oarsmen dressed in three colors: red for the king, white for the Worshipful Company of Vintners and blue stripes for the Worshipful Company of Dyers. The last two are medieval London trade guilds that were granted ownership of some Thames swans in the 15th century. The census tradition dates to the 12th century, when swans were considered an important food for royal banquets and feasts. While swans are now legally protected from hunting, they face threats from disease, pollution, vandalism and cruelty, Barber said. Their numbers have declined over the last two years, primarily due to outbreaks of avian flu across Britain, he said, adding that only 86 young swans were found during last year's Swan Upping, which was 45% fewer than the year before that. But Barber appeared positive at the end of the event's first day, with a total of 16 young swans recorded. The census continues until Friday, traveling from Sunbury, on the outskirts of London, to Abingdon, 80 miles (130 kilometers) upstream.

4 people were killed in a small plane crash at London Southend airport, police say
LONDON (AP) — All four people aboard a a small plane that crashed shortly after taking off from London Southend Airport are dead, police said Monday. Essex Police said that work is continuing to formally identify the victims of Sunday's crash, none of whom are British. The Beechcraft B200 Super King Air operated by Dutch firm Zeusch Aviation had flown from Athens, Greece to Pula in Croatia on Sunday before heading to Southend. It was due to return to its home base of Lelystad, in the Netherlands, on Sunday evening. The 12-meter (39-foot) turboprop plane came down moments after takeoff and burst into flames. 'Sadly, we can now confirm that all four people on board died,' Essex Police Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin told reporters. 'We are working to officially confirm their identities. At this stage, we believe all four are foreign nationals.' Zeusch Aviation operates medical evacuation and transplant flights as well as aerial mapping and private charters, according to its website. The company said that 'it is with deep sadness that we confirm there were no survivors among the four people on board flight SUZ1. 'Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victims, their families, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,' it said. London Southend is a relatively small airport, around 45 miles (72 kilometers) east of the British capital, used for short-haul flights by airlines including easyJet. The airport remained closed on Monday with no word on when it would reopen. Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch said it has sent a 'multi-disciplinary team including inspectors with expertise in aircraft operations, human factors, engineering and recorded data' to the airport.
