‘Kalpana never got the recognition she deserved from cinema,' says sister Urvashi: ‘She would have received many good roles today'

'Kalpana should have been alive today,' Urvashi said without missing a beat. Was it the beloved elder sister or the unparalleled co-star she missed the most? Not sure. But I could see Urvashi's eyes glittering and her face lighting up as she began speaking about Kalpana. A moment or two later, I realised that those must have been the same reactions she noticed in me too, as we were discussing one of our favourite artistes; a talent like no other.
In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, legendary South Indian actor Urvashi spoke in depth about her late elder sister Kalpana and how she influenced her, not just as a sibling, but as someone who brought joy to those around her by putting a smile on their faces. 'She influenced me in every way. As actors, all our mannerisms came from our mother. Even when talking at home or on the phone, one couldn't tell if it's mom, me or Kalpana. In Tamil Nadu, it's easy for the people to recognise because mom and Kalpana's Tamil had a Malayalam accent. Since I didn't have that, they identified me that way,' she observed.
'As for acting, nobody really influenced me because I didn't come into the world of cinema with that kind of passion or desire. But personally, Kalpana influenced me a lot. Her spontaneous humour… that flow she had… the ability to capture an audience so charmingly. That skill is very rare among women. I haven't seen anyone else like her,' Urvashi recalled.
'Not just now… Even when she was in school, there was always an audience around her. The senior girls in tenth grade would say, 'Kalpana, please come join us,' and take her home to get her to make them laugh. And she'd take me along too. We (Urvashi and their eldest sister Kalaranjini) received special treatment from others for being Kalpana's sisters. She was that popular,' she added.
Nonetheless, Urvashi also strongly emphasised that Kalpana never got the recognition she deserved from cinema. When asked whether Kalpana would have received extraordinary roles — like the one Urvashi played in director Christo Tomy's Ullozhukku, which earned her a sixth Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress — she agreed. The acting legend also shared her belief that Kalpana would have managed to break the glass ceiling, too, and move beyond the stereotypical roles she often received.
'Kalpana should have been alive today, I often wish. I still do. Today's directors have such foresight. I'm not undermining the old directors, nor intentionally praising the new ones. However, those today have the courage to take creative risks. Take an artiste like Indrans, for example. (If not for today's filmmakers) The talent within him would have never come out. He has immense knowledge about costumes, a classic way of thinking, and reads extensively. Today's directors gave him the platform to express those things,' she pointed out.
Urvashi continued, 'The last role that Kalpana did in Charlie (the 2015 Martin Prakkat directorial featuring Dulquer Salmaan and Parvathy Thiruvothu in the lead roles) is an example. Certainly, she could have done many good roles. Maybe even Ullozhukku itself, Kalpana could have done beautifully.'

Prabhas-starrer The Raja Saab's creative producer alleges Tollywood producer tried to run negative campaign against movie: ‘This film was only made possible because…'

The much-awaited teaser of Prabhas' upcoming film The Raja Saab was released today. At the teaser launch event on Monday, creative producer Sreenivas Kumar Naidu, also known as SKN, claimed that a Tollywood producer tried to run a 'negative campaign' against his friend and director Maruthi's film. He also revealed what went on behind the scenes during the initial stages of the horror fantasy. At the event in Hyderabad, SKN expressed his happiness for Maruthi finally getting his due. 'Much like how a wife knows her husband best, only a friend can know a best friend's potential. Maruthi and I have been friends for 20 years now. Listen to me today. Everybody who underestimated this film will change their mind. You'll see the 'rebel god' Prabhas whom you've missed for a decade now,' he said. While addressing the media and fans, the creative producer alleged that a Tollywood producer tried to sabotage the film and credited Prabhas for not being affected by it. Without directly taking any names, he said, 'I am well aware of how a producer tried to negatively campaign on this film when they began shooting. Now see how the same producer will talk positively about the film tomorrow. This film was only made possible because Prabhas gave his best without believing in those campaigns.' Maruthi even shared that he was ready to shelve the movie, but was surprised and motivated to make the film when Prabhas appreciated the script. 'I wondered why he was trusting me so much. I realised I need to move forward and that I hadn't come to Hyderabad to give it all up.' The Raja Saab has been produced by Vishwa Prasad of People Media Factory. Besides Prabhas, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Nidhhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan, and Riddhi Kumar. The horror-comedy is set to hit theatres on December 5 in all south Indian languages and Hindi.

Boman Irani recalls Sunil Dutt's heartfelt gesture on Munna Bhai sets: ‘He made us sit and eat together'

Actor Boman Irani, who played Dr JC Asthana in Rajkumar Hirani's Munna Bhai MBBS (2003), recently reflected on how things were different on Munna Bhai sets. Boman also spoke about the love he received for his role as Virus in 3 Idiots, and how the OTT space offers greater creative freedom. In a conversation with SCREEN, the actor recalled, 'When I did Munna Bhai, there was a change on the first day of shoot. During lunch break, Sunil Dutt sahab looked around and asked where the food was. He was told, 'Aapke van mein pahuch gaya.' There were no vanity vans earlier. He said that why would he eat alone in the van.' Sunil Dutt instantly made arrangements for the entire cast and crew to sit and eat together. 'He asked to bring a few beach umbrellas and two tables from production, so that everyone can sit and eat together. That was a change I felt was different at the start of my career,' the actor added. 'We did not have van wala lunch in The Mehta Boys, thinking of what Dutt sahab said to me. Saath mein khao. Unit means one. It's very important to understand that unity of a unit. Vo ek farak agaya hai and it's back. Today's generation is very professional, I feel very proud to work with them. Otherwise more or less, everything is the same,' the actor shared. Boman recently shared a video of airport lounge staff reacting to his film 3 Idiots playing on the TV. The actor added that this might be just the second time he's watched his own film. 'I haven't actually watched it since a past few years. I may have watched it more than once for sure, but the chef was actually telling me that he has watched it 15 times. So I said maine do baar dekha. It was so sweet what was happening at the airport,' he said. A post shared by Boman Irani (@boman_irani) The actor continued, 'I don't tend to watch my movies over and over again. I don't know. I feel like 'Raat gayi, baat gayi.' I get to hear about Virus wherever I go and I am very proud of it. I was feeling very awkward actually. I was looking at the television and thinking, 'Yeh toh buddhha agaya mera.' I was then looking left and right, thinking that nobody should see me staring at myself. That would be so narcissistic. But, I find strange watching my own movies, I don't know why.' Boman Irani, who will next be seen in the ZEE5 film Detective Sherdil, also expressed his gratitude towards the digital medium providing several opportunities to artistes. 'OTT gave me the opportunity to make the kind of film I wanted to make. The Mehta Boys is the kind of film that might not be the best choice to release at theatres in this climate. I disagree though. I think we should put everything in theatres. We respectfully put The Mehta Boys on OTT. And, I am very grateful to OTT for that. We can be a little braver about subjects, thanks to OTT,' he said. Boman Irani lastly spoke about his debut at Cannes, where he attended the premiere of his film Tanvi the Great. 'Mera toh sab kuch late hi hota hai life mein. I felt good, it was beautiful. I have been looking at these photographs since years, socha tha ek din main bhi karunga. There should be a wish in your heart. The word manifestation is overused, but I am a believer of it,' he concluded.
