First dibs: SIDES, founded by KSI & other UK YouTubers, brings its fried chicken to Bugis+
SIDES is a UK fast food joint with 5 outlets located in places like Essex, Manchester, and Wembley. If you've been to England and were obsessed with their crispy fried chicken, brace yourselves! They'll be opening their first international branch, SIDES Singapore on at + on 5 Jun 2025.
SIDES was founded by popular YouTuber and boxer KSI and 6 other friends, also known as Sidemen, who have over a whopping 22 million subscribers! To be completely honest, I don't know who most of them are — though I do recall KSI making an appearance as a guest judge on Britain's Got Talent. The fast food chain is known for its spicy, hot fried chicken, tantalising sides, unique sauces and milkshakes.
We got a sneak peek of SIDES SINGAPORE, conveniently located right next to Paco FunWorld on Level 3. The restaurant has a clean futuristic-industrial look with booth seats, white tiles and bluish neon lights.
We started off with the Classic Burger (S$12.50) and Ultimate Nashville Burger (S$12.90). They were huge by the way… think Carl's Jr-sized! There was no way I could fit any of the burgers into my mouth without giving them a slight squish first.
The Classic Burger has a thick slab of Nashville fried chicken, topped with sliced pickles, tomatoes, and slathered with secret sauce. The meat is doubled dipped and double coated, which explains the extra crispiness. That said, if you're not a fan of breast meat, it can start to feel a bit too much and a little in-your-face after a while.
The secret sauce is intriguing and has a multi-layered flavour. It reminded me of a mixture or tartar and Thousand Island — tangy and sharp.
For the Ultimate Nashville Burger, you'll be able to choose the heat level — from 0 to 3! Like the Classic, it also has a thick chunk of golden-fried chicken breast, complemented by coleslaw and sliced tomatoes. We selected Level 1 (Nashville Mild) which just had a light tinge of spice. Taste-wise, this was our favourite.
If chicken tenders are your jam, the Nashville Tender is a must-try! You can get the 4 Piece Tenders Meal with Waffle Fries (S$16.50), that also comes with 2 sauces and a drink.
The tenders are delightfully crunchy on the outside, while managing to stay moist and tender on the inside.
We chose the HOTTEST option — Level 3 (Nashville Hot). The heat was a slow burn, hiding its fiery heat even after the first mouthful. However, after subsequent bites, the spiciness builds and was relentless. I didn't feel the need to reach for a cold glass of milk, so it really wasn't that intense!
There are also sides like Corn Ribs (S$4), Chilli Poppers (S$4), and Mac & Cheese (S$4).
The best part about my visit to SIDES Singapore was taste testing all 9 of its sauces. Though each of them had its unique identity, the ones that stood out to me were the Buttermilk Ranch, Nashville Cheese, Garlic Mayo and Chocolate Barbeque.
My least favourite was the X|X Buffalo, which had notes of red Tabasco sauce that didn't resonate with me.
Don't forget to try the milkshakes to wash it all down like the Vanilla Marshmallow, Salted Caramel and Chocolate Brownie (S$9.90 each).
Head over to Bugis+ for a taste of Britain's fast food royalty. Brave the queues during peak hype or wait till things calm down — the choice is yours!

Indian dealers offer steeper discounts as price rally dulls demand
By Rajendra Jadhav and Brijesh Patel (Reuters) - Gold discounts in India widened this week to their highest levels in more than a month, as a rally in domestic prices to near-record highs weighed on demand, while elevated rates also dampened buying across other major Asian hubs. Domestic gold prices were trading around 98,300 rupees per 10 grams on Friday, after rebounding from a low of 90,890 rupees last month and nearing the all-time high of 99,358 rupees. The spike in prices forced Indian dealers to offer discounts of up to $56 an ounce below official domestic prices, which include a 6% import duty and 3% sales tax, up from $31 last week. "Prices have gone up, and that's really hit demand. Hardly anyone was buying this week," said Harshad Ajmera of wholesaler JJ Gold House in Kolkata. Gold demand in India typically remains subdued during the monsoon season, which began earlier than usual this year. Jewellers are not making purchases because the lean demand season has started, and they don't want to build high-cost inventory, said a Mumbai-based bullion dealer with a private bank. Meanwhile, dealers in top gold consumer China charged premiums of $10-$14 an ounce over the global benchmark spot price. Last week, bullion changed hands at par to a $15 premium. "Elevated gold prices appear to have negatively impacted Chinese demand, judging by weaker trading volume," said Hugo Pascal, a precious metals trader at InProved. In Hong Kong, gold was sold at a premium of $0.30 to $1.30, while in Singapore gold traded between at-par prices and a $2.50 premium. "We've seen some of our clients coming to take profit and also on the wholesale side, we've seen some selling because prices are high," said Brian Lan, managing director at Singapore-based GoldSilver Central. In Japan, bullion traded anywhere between a discount of $0.5 and a $0.5 premium over spot prices.

A dapper young man has become the talk of Manchester-by-the-Sea
'There is something about Matthew Swindell that suggests he has just walked off the set of a period film, so perfect is each detail of his person,' gushed the local newspaper, 'The Manchester Cricket,' From the moment he arrived, Manchester-by-the-Sea suddenly had something it didn't realize it was lacking: a fashion icon. Advertisement 'It's been quite the experience for me,' Swindell said recently inside the tiny 'I humbly believe that people appreciate a well-dressed man, particularly a young person,' he said as he adjusted a stray hair on his head (held together, fittingly, with a pomade called Dapper Dan). Advertisement He speaks with a polished lilt, reinforcing what those who know him say: it's not just his clothes that seem pulled from a time machine; it is Swindell himself. 'He's not vintage. It's like he's from the 1920s, like he's stuck in an era,' said Anna Gonzalez, who sees Swindell a few times a week at the post office where he will wait in line to watch her hand stamp his cursive correspondence with the date and place, Manchester-by-the-Sea. His speech pattern adheres to a formal politeness, polished to a shine, and peppered with a natural lean toward old-timey sayings, like when he was asked about his evening strolls to Singing Beach, and said, 'Yes, when day's work is done.' What he's doing might go unnoticed in a more urban setting, where hipsters and vintage clothing stores abound. But in upper-crusty Manchester-by-the-Sea, where the preppy uniform is more Not to say that what Swindell is doing is either preppy or hipster. It's older than that, from an era of pleasing formalness, where a crowd at Fenway was better dressed than we are at weddings today. 'The first time I saw him I was like 'Oh, my God, I love you,'' said Beth Giblee, who owns Advertisement When Giblee asked Swindell why he dressed as he did, he gave his usual simple answer: He loves the feeling of it. 'It doesn't matter if he's got the umbrella or the straw hat or the fedora, there's never a hair out of place,' said Frank Fusco, assistant manager of Matthew Swindell stood inside the Manchester-by-the-Sea Museum. Jonathan Wiggs/Globe Staff Swindell said he started wearing traditional menswear when he was a student at Salem State, and committed to it when he landed an internship at the Manchester-by-the-Sea Museum after graduation. Nearly four years later, as he has risen to run the day-to-day operations, his look has become synonymous with the museum. And as he leads visitors on a tour of an exhibit highlight the town's 'resort era' in the late 18th and early 19th century, you can almost picture Swindell in one of the black-and-white photographs of bathers on Singing Beach, or strolling the grand lawn of the Masconomo House Hotel. As he looks at the photos, you can feel his pride in feeling connected to the era. He loves the detachable collars — 'I wish more people would join me in being an enthusiast for them' — and, particularly, the hats. Swindell is a dedicated follower of the tradition of switching from a winter felt hat to a summer straw hat on May 15. 'I've always loved history, but I have a particular fascination with happened before you in the places you know well,' he said. 'Some people say the past is another country. You might say I'm always visiting.' Advertisement Swindell switches from wearing a felt hat to a straw hat on May 15. Jonathan Wiggs/Globe Staff Billy Baker can be reached at

Hotdogs, nachos & iced latte from HDB window by 49-year-old ex-events director
Fancy the idea of a food truck but find it challenging to do so in Singapore? Then why not open a home-based business and sell hotdogs, nachos and drinks from your HDB living room window? That's what 49-year-old Rafeek ended up doing in his ground floor unit at 834 Tampines Street 82. Previously working as a director of events, Rafeek decided to resign and focus on his passion — operating a food truck-style concept. One of his favourite cuisines is Mexican, and since he often makes chilli con carne for his hotdogs when he's hungry, he thought — why not share it with more people? His wife, a full-time teacher, helps him out after work in the evenings and on weekends. Here's a quick view of their operational hours: Mon to Thu — 6am – 2pm & 6pm – 9pm Fri — 6am – 11am & 6pm – 9pm Sat & Sun — 8am – 2pm & 6pm – 9pm We were greeted by the cutest, quirkiest little setup — think 2 cosy sofas, a lone deck chair holding court, a couple of tables, and even a 'grass' carpet thrown in for extra vibes. There are even 2 benches with a roadside view, located directly opposite St Hilda's Secondary School and the Chapel of Christ the Redeemer. They make perfect waiting spots while Rafeek prepares your food — or simply a place to sit, eat, and watch the world go by. When asked whether his neighbours were unhappy or minded his setup, he replied, 'I've had nothing but love and support from all of them. They even supported me and bought my hotdogs!' Awww — that's the kind of sweet, heartwarming vibe I'd call true kampung spirit! You can get the Classic HotDog (S$3) — a simple yet familiar combo of bun and chicken sausage, generously drizzled with chilli sauce and tangy American mustard. (Ignore the nacho chips, Mr Rafeek just tossed them in to make our photos 'prettier'!) Satisfy your coney dog cravings with the Chilli Beef & Cheese HotDog (S$7), an upgrade from the Classic Hotdog with chilli con carne (chilli beef), diced onions, sliced cheese and mushrooms. My honest review? It tastes so much better than a certain fast food chain (ahem!). The spiced minced beef is perfectly-spiced with a satisfying crunch coming from the onions. For something with more heft, give the Hotdog & Nachos Chilli Beef (S$11) a go. It features the Chilli Beef & Cheese HotDog, paired with nacho chips drenched in cheese sauce, barbeque sauce, and chilli. Feeling parched? No need to run to the nearby kopitiam! Rafeek also sells beverages with hot or iced options like Black Coffee (S$3), (S$4), (S$4), and Assorted Soft Drinks (S$2). I wasn't expecting the flavour of my S$4 Iced Latte to blow me away, but it did. The taste was well-balanced and not overly sweet — 2 thumbs up! Head down to 834 Tampines Street 82 for a food truck experience — minus the wheels. Simply swing by and ring the bell, or WhatsApp the ever-friendly Rafeek at +65 8947 1204 to pre-order. Rafeek's future plan is to get involved in catering and corporate events, we wish him only the best!
