Review – Batgirl #7: The Testament of Shiva
Ray: The first arc of this brilliant title was a high-octane action-adventure, as Cassandra Cain was forced to team up with her estranged mother to go up against an army of assassins. In the end, the two were put through the wringer and Cass confronted the toxic legacy her mother had passed down and ultimately decided to cut her off – only to have the choice taken out of her hands when Shiva sacrificed herself to allow Cass to escape. With Shiva presumed dead, Cass is left to explore her complex feelings for her mother – and delve deeper into her life, as Shiva has left behind a journal that turns back the clock. Back then, Shiva was a young girl in a nomadic family that was one step ahead of a maurauding army along with her mother, father – and sister, who played a key role in her origin. The two girls ultimately escaped an attack as their parents bought them enough time to get to safety – and that's where the story really begins. Phone call home. Via DC Comics.
The two girls find their way to a mountain village, a place filled with wise men, medicine women – and martial arts masters. While her sister fits into the village and embraces life there, the girl who would be Shiva dedicates herself solely to fighting and becomes a master to defend the village. But their bond leads them to cross a pair of cruel bandits, which brings down hell on the village – with the bandit leader having a shocking tie to the characters. Depending on how this story plays out, this character could still be alive in the present day. Isaac Goodhart guest-stars on art this issue, and I can't say enough good things about his style. His work is almost painted in places, and his characters are wonderfully expressive. We're seeing this story of Shiva's origin for the first time through Cass' eyes, and that adds a lot of emotion to the fantastical tale as it unfolds in bloody and fast-paced fashion.

Prosecutors seek substantial prison term for Sean ‘Diddy' Combs as they oppose bail

(Elizabeth Williams via AP) NEW YORK — Prosecutors said they now expect music mogul Sean 'Diddy' Combs could face a prison sentence 'substantially higher' than the four to five years they once thought he was likely to face after his conviction on two prostitution-related charges. They made the observation late Thursday in a Manhattan federal court written submission in which they also opposed Combs' request this week to be released on $50 million bail while he awaits an Oct. 3 sentencing. In early July, Combs, 55, was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges carrying potential life prison terms but was convicted of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution for arranging for girlfriends and male sex workers to travel to engage in sexual encounters that he filmed. Each prostitution-related charge carries a potential maximum 10 years in prison. Prosecutors said after the verdict that they thought federal sentencing guidelines meant to prevent wide disparities in sentencings for the same crimes would likely call for a prison term of four to five years. But they said Thursday they believe the guidelines range 'will be substantially higher,' raising the risk Combs will flee. Judge Arun Subramanian will have wide latitude in determining a sentence and can choose to ignore the guidelines, which are not mandatory. Combs' lawyers have said they believe the guidelines, if properly calculated, will call for 21 to 27 months in prison. On the day of the verdict, prosecutors won a bail fight after defence lawyer Marc Agnifilo argued Combs should be freed immediately on bail. Subramanian denied the defence request, saying Combs had not met the burden of showing by clear and convincing evidence a 'lack of danger to any person or the community.' But he said Agnifilo could renew the request. In doing so Tuesday, Agnifilo cited other cases he said were comparable to Combs' conviction in which defendants were granted bail. And he cited severe conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where Combs has been held since his September arrest at a New York hotel. He also said Combs was being treated unfairly for engaging in a 'swingers' lifestyle in which he and his girlfriends sometimes invited male sex workers to join them in multiday marathon sex performances. Prosecutors said in their filing Thursday that Combs' conviction on the prostitution-related counts carried a mandatory requirement that he remain in jail prior to sentencing, unless he could prove exceptional circumstances, which they said he cannot. They said he should also remain in prison as a danger to the community, a claim that Agnifilo disputed in his papers. 'Sean Combs will not be violent to anyone. As we said in court, this jury gave him his life back, and he will not squander his second chance at life, nor would he do anything to further jeopardize his seven children not having a father, and four of his children not having a parent at all,' Agnifilo wrote earlier this week. Prosecutors also said conditions at the federal lockup had improved considerably before Combs was arrested. A federal judge in January 2024 had blasted conditions at the jail, including its extensive lockdowns and inadequate medical care. Prosecutors said cases cited by Agnifilo in which other defendants received bail were not comparable to the crimes Combs was convicted of carrying out, particularly because of his propensity for violence. 'The defendant's extensive history of violence — and his continued attempt to minimize his recent violent conduct — demonstrates his dangerousness and that he is not amendable to supervision,' they wrote. ‘And Just Like That…' the internet wants to make background actor Christopher Clark a star

(Craig Blankenhorn/HBO Max via CNN Newsource) Technically, Christopher Clark was a background performer on a recent episode of 'And Just Like That…,' but he doesn't mind if you refer to him as 'the extra extra.' That's because the actor – who is a superfan of the HBO Max series and the original that spurred it, 'Sex and the City' – is getting tons of online love thanks to his decision to go big and not go home with his performance. He couldn't be more delighted about it. 'It's funny because we shot this a year ago,' he told CNN in an interview on Thursday. 'And I've had the pleasure of working on this show a few times and it is always a dream.' Clark appears in the final scene of Season 3, episode 9 of 'And Just Like That…,' titled 'Present Tense,' in which Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) meets with her beloved girlfriends at a busy bar-restaurant after an intense interaction with Aidan Shaw (John Corbett). A clip focusing on Clark in the scene, posted to Instagram on Wednesday, was captioned 'The Meryl Streep of background actors steps into her light' and co-shared by influential 'Sex and the City'-focused social media account @everyoutfitonsatc. The post, which features Clark acting head to toe, has already garnered over 20,000 likes. 'This character needs to keep popping up at bars and restaurants the girls frequent,' one person wrote on the Instagram post. 'Coincidentally.' The official social media account for HBO Max commented, 'I couldn't help but wonder: Did I just see a star be born?' (HBO declined to comment further for this story when contacted) Some even lip read what Clark was saying during the scene, especially enjoying his telling another background actor, 'You're bad! You're so bad!' Ordinarily, background actors are not supposed to audibly speak in such scenes, and are instead instructed to pantomime, but those present for that particular shoot were made aware that this one would have a voice over so the actors were free to do and say what they wanted as long as they stayed in character. The scene was eventually overlaid with Parker's lines along with a moody soundtrack courtesy of Taylor Swift (the track is 'How Did It End?' off her most recent album). 'At one point they said, 'Big events have just happened in the show and the girls are getting together,' but I had no idea there'd be this sad Taylor Swift song and it'd be this emotional moment,' Clark said. 'So I'm just there sitting perched at the end of the bar, kiki-ing, having the time of my life.' If he looks familiar to viewers of the show, that's because Clark, who works as a realtor in his day job, has not only been in a few 'And Just Like That…' episodes, but also in the feature-length 2010 film 'Sex and the City 2.' On 'And Just Like That…,' he's repeatedly popped up in the same room with Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker) and was a cater waiter in a scene in Charlotte's home. The characters now feel like family to him. 'In my own (delusional) mind I am there with them because these characters mean so, so much to me,' said Clark, whose late dog was named Bradshaw for Parker's character and whose current pup, Truman Jones, is named in honor of legacy 'Sex and the City' character Samantha Jones played by Kim Cattrall. Understandably, Clark would not be unhappy if this unexpected star turn led to more work. Commentors suggested that they would enjoy seeing him in a spinoff of some type, and he has some ideas. Since the character Seema Patel played by Sarita Choudhury is a realtor on the show and Clark is one in real life, he envisions being part of her storyline. 'Maybe we have a falling out, but the girls take my side,' he suggested by way of some TV-ready drama. Until then, Clark hopes to keep working on the show and watching episodes with a Cosmopolitan cocktail in hand and his beloved pup at his side.
