Jack Dorsey's Bluetooth messaging app Bitchat now on App Store
Bitchat operates through Bluetooth mesh networks, which means that users can send messages to others within the range of Bluetooth connectivity — usually around 100 meters — without cell reception or a Wi-Fi connection.
The app's UX is very minimal. There is no log-in system, and you're immediately brought to an instant messaging box, where you can see what nearby users are saying (if anyone is actually around you and using the app) and set your display name, which can be changed at any time.
While Bitchat is sparking interest due to Dorsey's reputation, the concept of Bluetooth-powered messaging apps is not new. These apps are also popular in settings like large music festivals, where cell service may be limited, or in the aftermath of natural disasters, where cell service and Wi-Fi availability may be impacted. The Bluetooth messaging app Bridgefy was notably used during pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, since its ability to function without the internet made it harder for authorities to detect.
Dorsey advertised Bitchat as a secure, private messaging platform when it went live for beta use earlier this month. But security researcher Alex Radocea pointed out in a blog post that it's easy to impersonate other people within Bitchat, calling into question how secure the 'vibe-coded' app really is.
'In cryptography, details matter,' Radocea wrote. 'A protocol that has the right vibes can have fundamental substance flaws that compromise everything it claims to protect.'
Dorsey later admitted that the software had not been subject to an external security review and thus may contain vulnerabilities.
Bitchat's concerns around impersonation also extend to the app itself. As of now, the app can be downloaded for iOS via the App Store, or it can be loaded onto an Android device by downloading the app from GitHub. However, the Google Play store hosts multiple apps that appear to be pretending to be Dorsey's app, which have garnered thousands of downloads.
Dorsey has not directly addressed the fake Bitchat apps on the Google Play store, but he did repost another user's X post that said that Bitchat is not yet on Google Play, and to 'beware of fakes.'

There's a Tea app for men, and it also has security problems
Tea bills itself as a safety dating app for women, allowing users to anonymously share details about men they have met. A new app called TeaOnHer has emerged that attempts to flip the script, with men sharing information about women they date. And while Tea drew scrutiny last month after a data breach revealed user information, including potentially identifying details such as phone numbers and personal anecdotes, the copycat app seems to be suffering from the same problem. TechCrunch discovered several security issues at TeaOnHer, which is currently second most popular lifestyle app on iOS. (Tea is the current leader despite the issues). The publication reported that it identified a security flaw that allowed anyone to access TeaOnHer user data, including usernames, email addresses, uploaded driver's licenses and selfies. It also found a possible second issue where the email address and plaintext password for Xavier Lampkin, founder and CEO of the app's developer, was left exposed. These credentials appear to offer access to TeaOnHer's admin panel, which is another security risk. The full report at TechCrunch also raises concerns about the content shared on the app, which included spam posts with nude photos of women. It's unclear how many of the roughly 53,000 users for TeaOnHer might be bots, or whether the app was ever meant to be used seriously; chunks of its description in the iOS store use near-identical language to Tea's listing.

My Favorite Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner Is 29% Off on Amazon Right Now
We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more › The latest car news, reviews, and features. An OBD2 scanner that can read your vehicle's trouble codes is a critical tool for DIYers. But even if you don't like turning wrenches yourself, it's hugely helpful to be able to get an idea of what's going on with your car when the check engine light comes on—at a minimum, it can tell you if you need to stop driving immediately or can procrastinate the repair. One of my favorite tools for this job, the BlueDriver, is the cheapest I've ever seen it on Amazon right now. See It There are a million OBD2 scanners on the market, but I like the BlueDriver because it's particularly user-friendly for non-pros. And it lets you use your phone's rich interface, rather than a tiny LCD screen, to get info. BlueDriver provides contextual information along with trouble codes, plus it's wireless. Simply plug the device into your car's diagnostic port (pretty much every U.S.-market car made after 1996 has one in the driver's footwell area), Bluetooth it to your phone, and the free app lets your car talk to you. It's compatible with iOS and Android; I use mine with an iPad because the screen's nice and large. If you're willing to go deeper on diagnostics, BlueDriver can report some live engine data. But if you just need to know if your car's about to explode or if you just have a minor issue, the app will tell you that in pretty plain language, too. As long as you have an internet connection, you can zoom straight from your trouble-code diagnostic to likely causes and repair suggestions. It's a great compromise between cheap, small OBD scanners and higher-end color-screen ones. I think I paid about $100 for mine a couple of years ago, the list price is $119.95, and if you grab this Amazon deal right now, you can pick one up for $84.95. Pro tip for those who are really frugal: Many auto parts stores will read your engine codes for free. But that's not always practical or convenient. The BlueDriver does a lot of what higher-end scanners can do at my lower cost since it uses your phone as the primary interface. And, as discussed, it provides some tips and insights to get your car working properly again. If you prefer a wired device that's self-contained and doesn't require phone pairing, the Innova 5610 is also on sale (more money, but high-quality), as well as the Topdon AD600S (horizontal interface, wider screen).
